Bottle Stopper Exhibit

The Wood Turning Center in Philadelphia, PA is putting together a juried/invitational traveling exhibi-tion of corkscrews and bottle stoppers. Internationally known artists Boris Bally and Michael Hosaluk will curate this exhibit. They are looking for original corkscrews and wine bottle stoppers for a show scheduled for May 2009 which will be held in conjunction with the 2009 Society of North American Goldsmith’s Annual Conference in Philadelphia. There are no restrictions regarding materials and methods of construc-tion, except that the corkscrew or bottle stopper must fit into a bottle of wine or be able to open a bottle of wine. - Video or film documentation of ways of getting into a bottle of wine will be considered. - Sets including a corkscrew and related bottle stopper(s) are welcome. - Collaborative projects are welcome - Work in the show can range from functional to decorative to absurd. Zany crazy ideas are fine. For a prospectus or more information contact Suzanne Kopko at [email protected] or (215) 923-8000. Application deadline November 3, 2008.

It is time for membership renewal and Phil Mannino will start collecting the $25.00 for 2009 dues during the November meeting. Annual dues are due on January 1, 2009 and are consid-ered past due on March 14th.

Call of the Lathe by Tom Boley

No matter how many times I say it or hear it, I still find myself moving the tool rest without turning the lathe off. I did it the other day with a very thin walnut bowl which had some awesome bark. The banjo moved the 5” dust collector hose which then sucked itself onto the spinning bowl and gouged a deep scratch almost all the way around the bowl. I was able to sand it out, but it reminded me that when the call of the lathe overpowers good judgment, it’s time to stop and refo-cus.

CAW Mentoring Program by RJ Stroman

Do you want help with a specific project or improving your general woodturning skills? Then the CAW mentoring program is for you. You can contact me at [email protected] or 800-516-7621 and I will explain how the process works. I will also match you with another turner who can assist in enhancing your skills and who will ideally be in the vicinity of your home or as close as possible.

IF CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE TO YOUR CONTACT INFORMA-TION, INCLUDING YOUR EMAIL OR MAILING ADDRESS, YOU MUST CONTACT PHIL MANNINO at [email protected] . NEITHER CA SAVOY OR RICHARD SHERWOOD CAN MAKE THE CHANGES.

Greetings all.. As mentioned we lost David Reel to brain cancer. He was a fine member of CAW and our represen-tative to Artisans United. I know he will be missed by many, myself included. Congratulations are in order for our New Board Members. I'm pleased to announce Bill Bearden will be taking over as Vice President and Christine Zender as our Newsletter Editor; Gerry Headley is moving to the position of President. Our 2009 CAW Board lineup will be; Gerry Headley President Bill Bearden Vice President CA Savoy Operations Director Al Melanson Secretary Christine Zender Newsletter Editor Phil Maninno Treasurer Mark Wollschlager Program Director We deferred voting in of our 2009 Budget until our November meeting so plan on considering the budget and you will hopefully have some ideas how we can increase receipts to provide for a more robust balance. I want to correct an error in my notes from last month. Walter Fink will be taking over the lead as our CAW Raffle coordinator. Jonathan Hess and Mike DeWan (when they are not engaged in col-lecting demo fees) have volunteered to stay on board and assist Walter. Well we had some great ideas for our tips and Jigs session. Each of our presenters had all their fingers intact, ergo obviously proven and effective solutions. I realize our silent auction has been silent over the past several months as we conducted our exotic wood buy. Silent auction will be in full swing for our November meeting so please plan on bringing something in to donate for the auction. This is one way we generate revenue for the budget and I’m sure most members have tools, wood, and other items that are no longer being used. Clear out some shop space for a good cause. Fairfax County Christian Church Copper Beech. I would like to encourage CAW members who were part of the wood collection effort to make something for donation to the church. Christine Zender made a couple very nice bowls. Several CAW members have approach me expressing difficulties with cracked turnings. I understand that. Sometimes beech can be difficult and I really do appreci-ate their giving it the good college try. I'm looking forward to next month’s Mini - Quick Projects demonstrations by various CAW members.

Bob Horowitz (Bob The Woodturner) will exhibit and sell his work at the City of Fairfax Holiday Craft Show (November 15-16) at Fairfax High School, 3501 Rebel Run in Fairfax. Then he will do the Wakefield Park Holiday Art & Craft Show (December 6-7) at Audrey Moore RECenter located at, 8100 Braddock Rd., Annandale, VA. Two CAW members received awards in the "Decorative Objects" category at the WWG exhibit "From Our Trees ... Artistry is Revealed" held at the Del Ray Artisans Gallery in October. Out-standing Design went to Neil Kagan, and Outstanding Workmanship went to Patrick O’Brien. In making the award to Neil for "The Secret Rose", Juror David Fry wrote "Everything in this contem-plative piece is paradoxically in motion, like a stream. It would have been easy to leave the external body of this covered box static and unadorned, but instead it moves with divergent yet complemen-tary contours relative to the spirals on the top and bottom. This is another piece with druidic mojo." And in making the award to Patrick for "Fluted Cherry Bowl", Juror David Fry wrote "A solar medal-lion of sorts, this piece exudes crispness from every angle, with the fluted underside radiating the hard, striped figures of agate pitched inward. The subtle variation in flutes reminds the viewer that a human hand, and not computer, guided the righteous cuts." Lynda Smith-Bugge’s sculpture, "Thunderstruck", was juried into the exhibition "AQUIFER" at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery, 701 Ninth St. NW, Washington, DC (enter on the 700 block of 8th Street, NW between G and H streets). This opens Saturday, November 8th with a reception from 6-9 pm, and closes Friday, December 19th. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday 12-4pm, except the Gallery will be closed Thanksgiving weekend. On Saturday November 15th, they offer a Curators Talk & Panel Discussion from 2-4 p.m. This exhibit is sponsored by the Washington Sculptors Group and Washington Project for the Arts. Clif Poodry teaches INTRODUCTION TO BOWL TURNING November 22 and 23, and AD-VANCED BOWL TURNING on December 20 and 21, 2008, at the Woodworkers Club in Rockville, MD. See: http://www.woodworkersclub.com/practice%20class1.htm Aaron Grebeldinger will teach Bowl Turning on Saturdays November 22nd, December 6th, and January 3rd, 10 - 5 PM. at WOODCRAFT in Springfield, VA. Call the store at 703-912-6727 to reg-ister, or see www.woodcraft.com/stores/store.aspx?id=327&nav=classes. Tom Boley will be teaching Bowl Turning on Saturday November 22nd, Turning Natural Edge Bowls on Saturday December 20th, and Turning a Plate, Saturday January 24th. Classes are from 10am - 5pm at the Leesburg WOODCRAFT store. To register, call 703-737-7880 or email them at: [email protected]. Table Saw Safety - Avoid Kickback at the Table Saw

Since many woodturners use a table saw in their woodturning efforts, and knowing everyone wants to use a table saw in the safest manner possible, a study of one of the major safety hazards of a ta-ble saw is in order. Kickbacks cause not just damage to the piece of wood but more importantly, kickbacks can cause injury and possibly even death if the injury is severe and the woodworker can-not seek medical treatment. See the article on kickbacks, appearing on page 8. The article ap-peared in the November 2008 edition of Popular Woodworking. It is reprinted with thanks to and permission from Steve Shanesy, Editor of Popular Woodworking Magazine.

Exhibit Opportunities by Phil Brown

From the Upcoming Newsletter Editor by Christine Zender

Hello CAW Members! I have been chosen to be your new CAW Newsletter Editor. What an honor! I’m looking forward to the challenge and wanted to send out a shout to everyone. My first newsletter will be the January 2009 edition. Richard Sherwood, the current Editor, has been a great help with getting me going in the right direction. I have some ideas for the newsletter and wanted to ask the members for their opinions and sugges-tions…after all it is “your” newsletter. So here are some questions/comments that I would love your input on.

• Is there any topic/feature you would like to add to the newsletter? Anything you would like to see done differently?

• Do you have any suggestions or comments on the CAW newsletter format? • Are photographs important to you? Would you like to see more or fewer of them?

I would love to hear from every member….and if you would rather call me at home sometime to dis-cuss your thoughts, by all means do so. It would also be nice to know if you would like to contribute to the newsletter by authoring an article or two on what you might like to write about. This is a great way for members to get to know each other and will give our newsletter some diversity. If you don’t know what to write about, I will come up with a list of general topics to get your creative juices flowing and post it in the December news-letter. I look forward to hearing from all of you and happy turning. Christine Zender, 703-425-7114 [email protected]
