From Our Pastor Dear Parishioners, “At difficult moments in the Church’s life, the pursuit of holiness becomes even more urgent. And holiness is not a ques on of age; it is a ma er of living in the Holy Spirit.” These words pronounced by St. John Paul II in 2002 provide the framework for the solemnity we celebrate today. This feast in which we commemorate all saints and blessed along with the mul tude of those who are in heaven enjoying the bea fic vision that are only known to God reminds us that the call to holiness is not for few, but for everyone. Jesus made his own the call to holiness already addressed by God to the people of the old covenant: You shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy (Lev 19:2). He repeated it con nually by word and by the example of his life. Especially in the Sermon on the Mount –today’s Gospel- the Incarnate Word le us a code of Chris an holiness. This me, I’d like to share with you an excerpt of one of our Holy Father’s catechesis on the topic and which aims to respond to two important ques ons. The first one: What does this universal voca on to being saints consist in? He says: “We must bear clearly in mind that sanc ty is not something we can procure for ourselves, that we can obtain by our own quali es and abili es. Sanc ty is a gi , it is a gi granted to us by the Lord Jesus, when He takes us to Himself and clothes us in Himself, He makes us like Him. In his Le er to the Ephesians, the Apostle Paul states that Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanc fy her (5:25-26). You see, sainthood truly is the most beau ful face of the Church, the most beau ful face: it is to rediscover oneself in communion with God, in the fullness of his life and of his love. Sanc ty is understood, then, not as a preroga ve of the few: sanc ty is a gi offered to all, no one excluded, by which the dis nc ve character of every Chris an is cons tuted.” The second ques on: How can we a ain holiness? “In order to be saints, there is no need to be bishops, priests or religious: no, we are all called to be saints! So, many mes we are tempted to think that sainthood is reserved only to those who have the opportunity to break away from daily affairs in order to dedicate themselves exclusively to prayer. But it is not so! Some think that sanc ty is to close your eyes and to look like a holy icon. No! This is not sanc ty! Sanc ty is something greater, deeper, which God gives us. Indeed, it is precisely in living with love and offering one’s own Chris an witness in everyday affairs that we are called to become saints. And each in the condi ons and the state of life in which he or she finds him- or herself. […] Are you consecrated? – Be a saint by living out your dona on and your ministry with joy. Are you married? – Be a saint by loving and taking care of your husband or your wife, as Christ did for the Church. Are you an unmarried bap zed person? – Be a saint by carrying out your work with honesty and competence and by offering me in the service of your brothers and sisters. “But, father, I work in a factory; I work as an accountant, only with numbers; you can’t be a saint there...”. “Yes, yes you can! There, where you work, you can become a saint. God gives you the grace to become holy. God communicates himself to you”. Always, in every place, one can become a saint, that is, one can open oneself up to this grace, which works inside us and leads us to holiness. Are you a parent or a grandparent? – Be a saint by passionately teaching your children or grandchildren to know and to follow Jesus. And it takes so much pa ence to do this: to be a good parent, a good grandfather, a good mother, a good grandmother; it takes so much pa ence and with this pa ence comes holiness: by exercising pa ence. Are you a catechist, an educator or a volunteer? Be a saint by becoming a visible sign of God’s love and of his presence alongside us. This is it: every state of life leads to holiness, always! In your home, on the street, at work, at church, in that moment and in your state of life, the path to sainthood has been opened. Don’t be discouraged to pursue this path. It is God alone who gives us the grace. The Lord asks only this: that we be in communion with Him and at the service of our brothers and sisters.” (11/19/2014) Happy All Saints Day! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE

Note to Parishioners re: Stadium Events To help you plan your schedule for a ending Mass at Our Lady of Peace, please refer to the stadium’s events calendar. You may also consid-er downloading The Levi’s® Stadium mobile app from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store to confirm real- me traffic issues head-ing to or leaving from the stadium. If you have been wondering about ac vi es and traffic leading up to the super bowl next February 7, you don’t need to. From what we have been told, most of the events will be in San Francisco or San Jose. On January 31, however, the city of Santa Clara is planning a super celebra on at Mission Colleges with pop music performers on stage (e.g. Heart”, food, and drink. This is a Sunday and it will impact traffic. More details will be coming. Instead of worrying about the traffic, however, let’s consider how we might spread the message that we are across the street!? For example, if we can get a speaker ed to professional football, we’re hoping to schedule a February 3 Theology on Tap the week before superbowl that we can promote throughout the bay area. Any other sugges ons? Contact Karen Ruiz at 408-988-4585 x2125. Two areas where the City of Santa Clara is welcoming par cipa on by our parishioners: 1) Volunteers needed for event control that Sunday and 2) we may be able to sponsor an ac vity (e.g. like selling some beverage or food)—the purpose being to remind a endees that we are right across the street. More informa on will be available in the coming weeks.

Prayer for Children

O God the Father of mankind, who hast given unto me these my children, and commi ed them to my charge to

bring them up for Thee, and to prepare them for eternal life: help me with Thy heavenly grace, that I may be able

to fulfil this most sacred duty and stewardship. Teach me both what to give and what to withhold; when to re-

prove and when to forbear; make me to be gentle, yet firm; considerate and watchful; and deliver me equally

from the weakness of indulgence, and the excess of severity; and grant that, both by word and example, I may be

careful to lead them in the ways of wisdom and true piety, so that at last I may, with them, be admi ed to the

unspeakable joys of our true home in heaven, in the company of the blessed Angels and Saints. Amen.
