Roger Vogel New Arizona Champion The 1970 Arizona State tournament was held at Daley Park, in Tempe on

September 12 and 19. This was the first time for the state tournament to be held at night, and the weather was perfect.

When Roger Vogel came west he didn't leave his horseshoe pitching prowess back in Illinois, as evidenced by his victory in winning the state title in his first attempt.

Art Kamman, of Mesa, who had held the state championship ten times, and Vogel, both without a loss, met in the final game of the evening. All eyes were centered on court number five and the spectators witnessed a fine ex-hibition of horseshoe pitching, with Vogel finally the victor, 50-43.

Arizona, the Baby State until recently, has had but four champions in its history. Jimmy Lecky was champion for 22 years, Stan DeLeary for ten, Art Kamman for ten, Giff Thompson for one, and now Roger Vogel is number five.

Ross Carl of Sunnyslope, Arizona, is the new Class B champion, and Art Moore of Mesa, is the new Class C winner.

with all its features, the side notch and weighted ends, included. First to introduce hard points and hooks. A t once it became a leading shoe for 29 years. Figured in the top records of all states and in the National tournament.

So far ahead of its time that finally, re-cently, other manufacturers admitted it by trying to copy it.

Ted used it, traveling year round for 33 of the 37 years in all kinds of show business,

including the tops of three nations. A truly lifetime career.

Ellis Griggs Again King Over Illinois State Ringermen Ellis Griggs of Plainville, Illinois, many times state champion of Illinois,

again reigns as king over Illinois ringermen by winning the 1970 Illinois State Tournament held at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, Illinois. Ray Martin of Philo, Illinois was the runner-up.

The tournament was beset by intermittent rains which held up play several times. This year was the first time in 20 years that rain interferred with the meet due to not having the large tent as in past years.

Abe Austin was the winner of the newly instituted senior tournament. Mike Durrette overcame, small but mighty, 11-year old Mike Stout to win the Boy's tournament.

All classes consisted of twelve players which worked out real nice as all participants were given the privilege of playing eleven games.

Georgetown, Kentucky Horseshoe Club proved to be the best tournament held to date. There were 98 participants involved with the highest percent yet pitched in a state tournament. Howard Hamilton, the new state champion, also was the state champion in 1967, the first year under N.H.P.A., and has come close to winning on several occasions. The Women's Championship ended in a playoff with Mrs. Christine Kelley of Lexington defeating last year's champion, Mrs. Johnson of Frankfort.

Al Lord Wins Maine State Tournament After a week's delay because of bad weather the final rounds of the Maine

State Horseshoe Tournament were completed Sunday, August 30th at Mar-cotte Park in Lewiston, Maine. There were seven classes with 47 men in competition. The Ladies and Juniors games were pitched Saturday, August 22.

Before the start of Classes A - B - C a moment of silence was held in memory of Ike Davis of Orrington and Walter Joy of Ellsworth, who had passed away during the past year. Because of the delay caused by the weather six players were unable to pitch because of previous commitments.

Carson In Usual Stride to Maryland State Title The Maryland state championship was held on the Salisbury City Park

courts in Salisbury, Maryland on September 6th. It was Dale Carson, (Baltimore) still on the throne when the sun set in

the west. He rolled over all opposition, winning all seven games. He showed the power of his ringer ability by subduing Ray Thiekle of Camp Springs, his only competition.

The big surprise was Gary Chatham, who dethroned Burl Vandergrift, de-fending champ, for Class B honors. Gary came up from a lower class and took all the honors.

The final curtain was lowered on what had to be termed one of the most successful horseshoe pitching seasons in several years, at Weston. It was the 49th annual meet.

Not too many surprises resulted in regard to those who repeated in their respective classes. Roy Smith repeated in Class A, however, it was somewhat a surprise that he was forced into a rugged overtime playoff with always tough "Doc" Maison, before he emerged state champion of Michigan for the eighth time in nine years. Orlin Knuth, pride of Reed City, successfully de-fended his Class B crown. Bob Darnold narrowly nosed out Lee Jacobs for the runnerup spot, in this always evenly matched group.

The big surprise occurred in Class C where John Vitten, Lake Orion narrow-ly missed a perfect record, losing only one of eleven games.

This is the first year the newly organized Upper Peninsula Horseshoe Association operated under the new charter, which was issued by the NHPA last December. Earl K. Grable, Regional Director for the NHPA notes the increase in membership from 30 charter members to 135 NHPA members this year, and he is looking forward to an even greater year in 1971, for the Upper Peninsula is a hotbed of enthusiasm for the horseshoe pitching sport. There were nine new courts installed at Bruce Crossing (where the Upper Peninsula tournament was held), especially to host this tournament. There are nine more presently being put in at White Pine, and great interest is being shown in other areas.

Marvin Burgess Wins Texas State Despite High Winds Marvin Burgess overcame a vicious 30 mile an hour wind and ten determined

competitors to win the 1970 Texas State championship. It was the ninth title for the "pitching parson" of Ballinger, Texas. Jim Woodson took the second spot and Bob Findley of El Paso finished in the third position.

Floyd Bass of Seguin won the Class B crown. Bob Binge of San Antonio placed second with Buck Weaver coming in third. In Class C Howard Burnette of San Antonio won out over Paul Pittman of Seguin. Earl Mann of San An-tonio came in third in this class. Newcomer Lee Keith of Denton won the Class D title. He was followed by Jeff Roemer of San Antonio and Harold Gore of Denton.

Linda McGuffin of San Antonio continued her winning ways by taking the Ladies title. Her mother, Kathy came in second. Nora Mann finished in third place.

Tommy Self of Denton dethroned Johnathan Burgess of Ballinger for the Junior title. Young Jack Morrell of San Antonio took third place in back of Johnathan Burgess.

American Legion Post 71 hosted the very successful tournament. In addition to providing the Texas horseshoe pitchers with fine courts and the facilities of their plush new club house, Post 71 also donated the beautiful trophies that were awarded to the top three winners in each class.

Ringer percentages for all classes were way down because of the unusually high wind that persisted throughout the two day event.

Merle Palmer Wyoming State "Champ" For 19th Time Merle "Perennial" Palmer, Cheyenne, Wyoming won his nineteenth state

championship at Burns courts, Laramie, Wyoming over Labor Day weekend. At dusk, following two days of play, three weary, chilled cowpokes faced each other in a tie playoff. In the playoff, last year's champ, Lee Laughlin, Chey-enne, and youthful Farron Eiseman, Riverton, tried desperately to stop veteran Palmer. Laughlin garnered second and Eiseman third before complete dark-ness enveloped the stakes. Farron, World Junior Champ 1967 and 1968, made a remarkable display of pitching ability in his first competition in the Men's Division.

Last year's second place winner, (Men's Class B) Stewart Chester took top honors this year in that class and also won the Charles W. Palm most Im-proved Player Award. Bob Burns, 1969 Men's C Champ, took the second spot

Newcomer Dave Harrison, Laramie, took Men's Class C without a defeat and Mick Botkin, Laramie, captured his first state tournament trophy by tak-ing second place in this class despite the keen competition.

This year we did not have a Junior Class, and as a result, a novice Class D for men was set up. Tom Raczykowski, Laramie, easily won first place with John Harris, Laramie, taking second place.

Veteran pitcher, Dessie Holliday, Riverton, overcame her challenger, Inez York, Riverton, for the Women's Class A State championship.

Without any pre-season practice, Margaret Williams, Laramie, took the lad-ies Class B title. Tiny Bev Holliday, Riverton, last year's second place winner in the class repeated her performance this year and took home her second beautiful trophy. Jean Beltz and Agnes Burns both of Laramie and without pre-season practice played and provided inspiration for women to participate in the sport.

Hazel Palm, wife of Charley Palm, memorable supporter and pitcher, spon-sored and presented the Improved Player Award.

The State Association welcomes the organization of the New B-T Club of Casper, Wyoming. Their 37 paid memberships resulted in doubling the number of State Association members this year over last year.
