AZSCCC In-Person Meeting

November 15, 2019 — Please mark your calendar and plan to attend the November Arizona State Citizen

Corps Council meeting. If you’re not already aware, the November meeting is the one meeting each year

that we ask ASCCC-appointed members and other Citizen Corps and partner programs representatives to

attend in person.

This year’s meeting is open to program managers and volunteers. It will include breakout sessions, CERT

refresher training as well as a tabletop exercise. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to collaborate

with other programs and engage in networking activities!

Recognition Awards

This year the Arizona State Citizen Corps Council will recognize volunteer programs that have implemented and maintained an active preparedness program.

Program managers interested in submitting activity information for consideration of a Recognition Award should complete the Citizen Corps Report Form (https://azdohs.gov/arizona-citizen-corps-program - one form per activity) and email the form(s) to cbowen@azdohs.gov.

Daisy Mountain Fire CERT

Daisy Mountain Fire & Medical is conducting our fall CERT training that will conclude on October 24th. Affiliated CERT volunteers will be providing first aid for seven different events between now and Thanksgiving and using those opportunities to talk will people about disaster preparedness. Daisy Mountain will also present CPR training on Novem-ber 7th and First Aid training on November 14th, for more information and registration visit https://goo.gl/r79fv1.

Scottsdale CERT

The City of Scottsdale is currently accepting registration for a C.E.R.T. course. This 6-week course begins October 10.

Yuma County CERT

September 4, 2019 - Yuma County Board of Supervisors declared September as Emer-gency Preparedness Month for Yuma County. In attendance were emergency manage-ment staff and volunteers to include CERT and Yuma Auxiliary Communications which are our local Ham Radio volunteers. September 6, 7, 13, 14, 2019 - Yuma County OEM hosted a CERT Basic Training course. CERT members taught the majority of the classes and had 13 community mem-bers complete the course. September 14, 2019 - Yuma County Emergency Management and Public Health taught a community readiness class at the Yuma County Library. Attendees were exposed to preparedness at home to include ready.gov, preparing a 72 hour kit, communication plan and family planning. Yuma County EM Director, Tony Badilla and U.S. Army Yuma Proving Grounds EM, Robert Borocio gave several media interviews on emergency preparedness month both on radio and on local television on family preparedness . September 22, 2019 - CERT general meeting :Training this month was on knots, loops and hitches. October 5, 2019-Yuma County CERT will be participating in the Yuma Police Department GAIN (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods) October 17, 2019 - CERT will participate in the Arizona Great Shakeout at 1017 AM- Participation for three minutes wherever you are at! October 17-18 ,2019 - Yuma County CERT will have an informational booth at the Yuma County Health Fair and will discuss CERT, emergent preparedness and have prepared-ness information available. October 19, 2019 - CERT general meeting: Safety Tracking, ICS Boards and 1 new knot. November 11, 2019 - Yuma County CERT will be participating with traffic control and street closures for the Veteran’s Parade. November 16, 2019 - CERT general meeting: Triage and 1 new knot. December 9, 2019 - Yuma County CERT will be participating with traffic control and street closures for the Dorothy Young Memorial Electric Parade. December 21, 2019 - CERT general meeting: communications and potluck festivities.

Coconino County CERT

August 30th thru September 2nd - Coconino County hosted the Law Enforcement Booth at our Fair. Over 20 volunteers assisted in giving out Personal Safety information and education for 4 days . September 9th – A CERT Training was conducted in Williams for the local CERT Team on Medical response to a Disaster. September 21st - Hosted a table at “Science in the Park” to educate the public on Wildland fire safety and Campfire safety. This event is put on by the Forest Service. September 24th - Conducted Monthly CERT training. Training was on Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) delivered by a local CISM member/Instructor. September 27th thru 29th - Basic CERT Academy was held at the Sheriff’s Office .Nine (9) students attended and graduated .

Recognition Award— Citizen Corps Activity Report From

To encourage Citizen Corps and partner programs to maintain an active status, the AZSCCC developed a concept wherein programs can report an activity under any of seven categories. Upon completion of an activity or prior to October of each year, programs will send a completed form substantiating their activities. Programs submitting activities will be receive a Certificate of Recognition at the annual in-person AZSCCC meeting held in November of each year.

The seven activity categories are:

Identify ways volunteers can help meet the needs of first responders and local emergency management

Educate neighborhoods on emergency preparedness and safety

Offer volunteer opportunities to address crime, or public health, or emer-

gency preparedness

Engage in public events to promote Citizen Corps

Partner with another volunteer unit to share resources in a time of need

Present to groups/organizations on Citizen Corps

Participate in a joint activity with another volunteer unit

Citizen Corps & CERT Activity Photos

In July and August, GGV CERT supported Teen CERT training for 29 students from Sahuarita and Walden Grove High Schools in Sahuarita, Arizona. Rural Metro Firefighters served as the instructors,.

For five days in August, GGV CERT members and Green Valley Fire Corps members supported Live Burn training conducted by the Green Valley and Drexel Heights Fire Departments. Wearing full Turn Out gear including SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) firefighters endured high heat and smoke to rescue "victims" from a specially designed training facility on Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The CERT and Fire Corps volunteers ensured the firefighters were given plenty of water, cold towels, and fresh SCBA tanks after they emerged from the burning building.

For the September National Preparedness Month, GGV CERT members received refresher Disaster Medical training.

October will feature two big events — On October

26th the GGV CERT mount-out trailer will be in the

Green Valley White Elephant parade, the

community's largest annual event.

During the night of October 30th GGV CERT

members will practice setting up an evacuation/

rehab center using a shelter, generator and work

lights transported to the shelter area in the mount-

out trailer. CERT members will then simulate

searching for victims to bring to the center, using

two-way radios to coordinate the search.

● Continues to provide support for local area. NGCC staffed the Event Command Post for the 8th annual festival in support of the Christo-pher Kohl’s Fire Depart-ment. Approximately 800 people were in at-tendance. The festival involved multi-agency support and included CKFD, Native Air Ambu-lance, CK Fire auxiliary, Gila County Sheriff’s Office and community volunteers.

● Other community events supported by NGCC include Air Port day, Tamales Cooking, Hal-loween, and the annual Christmas electric pa-rade.

● As a result of donations, grant funding and fund raising, NGCC provided six portable radios with accessories, a 10X10 pop-up shelter and print-ed emergency infor-mation for public aware-ness to the Pine Straw-berry CERT team for their CERT activities.

Council Mission Statement

Promote emergency preparedness for all Arizonans through education, training, and volunteer service.

The Council works with state and local Citizen Corps programs to cross collaborate, increase public

awareness, bridge partnerships, and strengthen community resilience to better prepare for, respond

to, and recover from threats of terrorism, crime, public health emergencies, and disasters of all kinds.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. Using their training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event and can take a more active role in preparing their community. The program is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Please visit the CERT program web page for more information.

Fire Corps

The Fire Corps promotes the use of citizen advocates to enhance the capacity of resource-constrained fire and rescue departments at all levels: volunteer, combination, and career. Citizen advocates can assist local fire departments in a range of activities including fire safety outreach, youth programs, and administrative support. Fire Corps provides resources to assist fire and res-cue departments in creating opportunities for citizen advocates and promotes citizen participation. Fire Corps is funded through DHS and is managed and implemented through a partnership be-tween the National Volunteer Fire Council, the International Association of Fire Fighters, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. National Neighborhood Watch Program

The National Neighborhood Watch Program (formerly USAonWatch), housed within the National Sheriffs’ Association, has worked to unite law enforcement agencies, private organizations, and individual citizens in a nation-wide effort to reduce crime and improve local communities. In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, Neighborhood Watch programs have expanded beyond their traditional crime prevention role to help neighborhoods focus on disaster preparedness, emergen-cy response and terrorism awareness. The Neighborhood Watch Program draws upon the com-passion of average citizens, asking them to lend their neighbors a hand. Please vis-it http://www.nnw.org/ for more information.

Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)

The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Program strengthens communities by helping medical, public health and other volunteers offer their expertise throughout the year as well as during local emer-gencies and other times of community need. MRC volunteers work in coordination with existing local emergency response programs and also supplement existing community public health initia-tives, such as outreach and prevention, immunization programs, blood drives, case management, care planning, and other efforts. Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS)

Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) works to enhance the capacity of state and local law enforce-ment to utilize volunteers. VIPS serves as a gateway to resources and information for and about law enforcement volunteer programs.
