HEAVEN by Randy Alcorn . . . Have you ever wondered . . .
What is Heaven really going to be like? What will we look like?
What will we do? Won’t Heaven get boring after awhile? In the
most comprehensive & definitive book on Heaven to date, Randy
invites you to picture Heaven the way Scripture describes it. God
has put eternity in our hearts. Now, Randy Alcorn brings eternity
to light in a way that will surprise you, spark your imagination
and change how you live today. This book is about real people
with real bodies enjoying close relationshps with God and each
other, eating, drinking, working, playing, traveling, worshiping and discovering on
a New Earth. Earth as God created it. Earth as He intended.
A friend called sharing the extreme difficulty she felt over her daughter. “I’m fine, no problem,” she began.
“Praise God this will pass.” Then she cried, “No, Sharon, I’m not fine. I feel utterly rejected by her.” I
listened and cried with her.
Later she wrote, “I’m restored to the Lord. I truthfully bore my heart before Him. Then I could openly
praise Him, not for the problem, but how He provided you, at the right moment, to hear my heart.” She’d
looked beyond the situation.
And I remember a difficult time when lying in a hospital bed: Nothing praise-worthy here. But the
afternoon sun began reflecting off the windows of another building; that’s how Jesus reflects God back to
us. Praise God, His hand is here, right now, all the time! Refreshed, I could look to a higher plain of praise.
Why do we try to candy-coat our deepest hurts before the Lord and others? Who taught us to praise God
when our home burned down or for a debilitating illness rather than . . . “I’m not happy about this but,
thank you, God, everyone is safe; thank you, Lord, for those who help me every day.”
Where did we learn to swallow our fears – our youth? A youth pastor, from Charles Swindoll’s church,
gave we parents sound advice in what NOT to say when your teen or a friend had a bad day: Never say,
“It’s nothing, grow up.” or “You’re bigger than this, don’t worry; those other kids don’t know up from
down.” And, “Buck up, you’ve got a lot going for you.” or the worst of all, “You shouldn’t be upset.” The
teen’s emotions aren’t validated; thinks him/herself worthless, put-down, like their feelings don’t matter.
Instead, first acknowledge the pain: “Ya, the day does sound crummy.” or, “I bet it hurt when those things
were said about you.” For the teen, someone had finally listened and actually heard their fears and that
they mattered.
Second, now it’s okay to ask, “Hmm, what made this person so angry? What’s your thought on how to turn
this situation around? “
And God desires honesty too rather than false words and platitudes in hopes to show Him and others that
we are above the problem. We can’t fool Him . . . “Really,” He’d say. “Haven’t I told you, ‘Come unto Me, all
you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest?’” (Matthew 11:28) “And didn’t I know you
from the beginning, ‘For You are fearfully and wonderfully made.’” (Psalm 139: 14) Consequently, I know
your disappointments, hurts, and sorrows.
Believing these truths frees us to honestly sing praises of love . . . not candy-coated, but those from the
heart, viewing the drama of living as seen through His face in others, and His beautiful creation:
“Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that, the fruit of our lips, giving
thanks to His name.” (Romans 12: 1, 2)
Happy Thanksgiving.

AWANA usually has a
food drive in
November but this
year it was decided to
have a penny drive to raise funds to
help support AWANA clubs that are
reaching out to kids around the
world. It was a contest between boys
and girls and the girls won by $6.75
which granted the girls the privilege of
having Dave Burger take a cream pie in
the face. When all was said and cleaned
up, a total of $172.29 was raised to help
share the gospel. Good work kids!
Have you ever thought about doing a
mission? We have a local option right
here for you. There are 115+ children
who need you. We are looking for
listeners and people that like to have
fun. We are growing and a few more
leaders are needed on Wednesday
nights for AWANA. If you are interested
please call Dave and Courtney Burger,
our AWANA commanders, at 466-3108.
