The Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 11, 2018

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

You may not have heard of Parish Catalyst, but a few years ago its founder, William Si-mon Jr, was the keynote speaker at the Archdiocesan Ministry Day in Sherwood. He spoke about the importance of the parish to the average Catholic, as "where it's at" for their faith life, and how he had "piggybacked" (for Catholics) on the work done (for Protestants) by Bob Buford, with his Leadership Network (starting in 1984), and which had involved 200,000 church leaders. The basic idea is that "innovative leaders" of thriving congregations would get together in "learning communities" and "share ideas." Mr Simon first did a study of some 300 Catholic parishes which were identified as "great" and evidencing "dynamic disciple-ship" (people who have strong faith, and invite others to share it, and grow into dynamic disci-ples themselves). From this study he published the book Great Catholic Parishes, which high-lighted the characteristics of (1) shared leadership, (2) fostering spiritual maturity and planning for discipleship, (c) excellence on Sundays, and (4) evangelizing in intentional, structured ways. The Archdiocese recommended several parishes to the Parish Catalyst project, for inclusion in their learning communities project. Our Lady of the Lake in Lake Oswego, and St Anthony in Tigard were the first to participate. But I initially declined, because I felt participation would not be helpful unless we were in a cohort of large multi-lingual, multi-cultural parishes. Within a year we got invited to the first cohort consisting of such parishes. The Pastor and at least two staff members need to come to four three-day sessions, each six months apart, in Los Angeles. Sister Raquel and Maria Elena Ruiz and I attended the first of the four sessions last July. Each parish was asked to come up with four goals on which to work during the next six months, to report on in Janary. For St Joseph we chose the following: (1) To Project the Why (and Nature) of a Parish of Dynamic Discipleship to the parish lead-ership, staff, volunteers, and so on. It was clear that the purpose of our existence, and our exist-ence as Church, is the Glory of God, in all the ways that plays out. As we studied the five char-acteristics of a Dynamic Disciple (based on the Parish Catalyst research), we saw that these actually were dimensions of the Cycle of Evangelization that Pope Paul VI had proposed in Evangelii Nuntiandi (1975): Leading, Gathering, Growing in awareness, Believing with con-viction, and Loving as Jesus did. The content of William Simon's book and of this vision has been presented to the Pastoral Council and Staff, in various stages of its articulation, and will continue to be presented, so that we all have a shared intuition of the big picture. (2) To Develop a Model Dynamic Discipleship Group intentionally incorporating the vision of Dynamic Discipleship. This pilot group is the Hispanic Catholic Charismatic Youth Group. Sister Martha is working with the group, and we will review its development in the light of the vision. Part of the reason for this starting point was a concern expressed by many that "retention" of youth in the faith into adulthood needs a fully-balanced experience of Catholic life. (3) To Implement the Archdiocesan Liturgical Handbook (ALH), some 500 pages long, and published in June 2018, which asks all parishes to survey their liturgical life in light of the li-turgical legislation of the Church and make corresponding adjustments, for the sake of unity, beauty, reverence, in our worship. You can download the PDF of the ALH here: https://www.archdpdx.org/divine-worship . This help toward unity in a multi-lingual parish with re-gard to one of the ways we "Gather" will be our focus. (4) To Undertake a Four-Week Stewardship Education Program in the Fall. This we did in a three-week format during the homilies of October 14, 21, and 28. We will keep emphasizing that the answer to the question, "Who are you?" is "I am a child of God and a memember of the Body of Christ," and that everyone of us is part of "Team Christ," meant to be an active agent of Christ, rather than merely a passive bystander. We are called to grow daily in learning how to recognize and honor the import that each person has for the working together of the whole parish family. During November our main effort will be to catalogue the theological and practical content of the ALH, and to provide messages from the pulpit, in the bulletin, and on the parish website, and in other settings to bring the whole parish into a more complete awareness and apprecia-tion of our liturgical life, and to provide training as needed for all groups (clergy, musicians, other ministries, the congregation, and so on). While wanting to be rubrically aligned with Church legislation, we also want to see the social and hospitality aspects of our Gathering grow.

With no man to own property, home or bring in an income, she would be struggling to get by. And yet, with great humility and great courage, she still pre-sents herself in the Temple, showing her brave faith. She trusts in God’s word. She hopes in his promise. And she gives all that she has. While no one else may notice, Jesus does. He notices the ways in which we empty ourselves when we don’t think we have more to give. Jesus sees. Jesus sees the mother who gets up for the sixth time in the middle of the night to comfort her crying baby. Jesus sees the father who takes up the daily grind to provide for his family, exhausted and wanting for a res-pite. Jesus sees the child who shares their snack with a friend. Jesus sees us. And our reward for these moments of quiet humility and generosity will be great. -

Mission Statement St. Joseph Catholic School is a parish ministry that teaches the faith, traditions and culture of the Catholic Church as the cornerstone of a solid academic foundation and virtuous char-acter formation. Philosophy St. Joseph School accomplishes its mission by assisting parents in their responsibility to

guide their children towards eternal happiness with God in heaven. The school strives for solidarity with parents in this regard, and to be a trustworthy and reliable resource for them and their children. Students are taught Christian virtues and are expected to be responsible citizens. We recognize the varied talents of our students and emphasize the importance of learning to share those talents with others. We strive to build a vibrant faith community among our students, staff, and parents. A rich sacramental life is available for students, and parents are always welcome to participate with their children. We pray in the church each morn-ing as an entire school with our priests. We have Mass weekly, with readings and songs done by students. Older students also attend the parish Mass at noon every Friday. Grades 3-6 visit the Adoration Chapel regularly. Preparation for First Communion is part of the curriculum in Grade 2. All stu-dents learn the prayers and gestures of our Faith. There are regular confessions available for students, as well as Stations of the Cross and recitation of the Rosary at the appropriate seasons. Training is offered for older student to become altar servers, and priests actively participate in educating the students on the richness of the Liturgy and Catholic culture. Our focus is to grow the ability of our students to think, reason, and communicate well in the pursuit of truth. This starts with a strong classical founda-tion in reading, writing, and mathematics. The academic curriculum meets or exceeds standards established by the Archdiocese, the State of Oregon, as well as national standards in each subject and each grade. We stress deep factual knowledge of the essentials of each subject, and we teach with a combination of Christian charity and high expectations. We intend for each student to reach their fullest potential and to equip them for the next levels of their education. The core curriculum is supplemented with classes and activities in Art, Media, Music, Spanish, Latin, and Physical Educa-tion, which vary by grade level. The school atmosphere is safe and nurturing, with an emphasis on the importance of being respectful to others, providing service to others, and de-veloping self-discipline. We believe each child is a unique gift, who requires loving guidance, encouragement, and individual attention in all the areas of life. We look to our parents to participate in the life of the school to ensure it is a continuation of family life, rather than an institution. Yet at times they also shield us from direct contact with pain, the fears, and the joys of others and the complexity of their personal experiences. Shepherds Field Olive Wood Handcraft—On November 17-18 a group from the Holy Land (Bethlehem & Jerusalem) will be selling religious articles after masses to support the Catholic Christian minorities in Beth-lehem. As a tradition, many of the Catholic families in the Holy Land work in small workshops to produce religious articles from olive wood. These articles represent the Christian art of the Holy Land. In the past,

they used to sell their artwork to pilgrims who visit the Holy Land. However, these days they are facing an economic hardship as very few tourists visit the Holy Land due to security issues. Many of the Catholic families immigrated and left the Holy Land. The percentage of Christians in the Holy Land has dropped to less than 1%. Sales will be used to help and support the Catholics in the Holy Land and to encourage them not to immigrate.

• St. Vincent de Paul Food Collection is the third Sunday of each month, Nov. 17-18, 2018. St. Vincent de Paul is accepting non-perishable food donations. Please take food donations directly to the white St. Vincent de Paul Van in the parking lot.

Se necesitan voluntarios y donaciones para ofrecer la co-mida del Día de Acción de Gracias.

Trabajemos juntos para ayudar a que el Día de Acción de Gracias sea un tiempo especial para todos nuestros veci-nos, amigos, y familias. Pueden ayudar juntos con los feli-greses. También pueden ayudar donando pavos congela-

dos, postres o dinero en efectivo.

Los pavos favor de llevarlos a la oficina a mas tardar el 13 de noviembre. Los Postres (no hechos en casa y no pies de calabaza) llevarlos a mas tardar el 21 de noviembre.

Segunda Colecta para la Campaña Católica para el Desarrollo Humano el 17 y 18

de Noviembre La colecta de la próxima semana para la

Campaña Católica para el Desarrollo Humano (CCHD) necesita su ayuda. CCHD fue fundada para romper el ciclo de pobreza en los Estados Unidos otorgando fondos a organizaciones que ayudan a las personas a ayudarse a sí mismas. Con su tradición de mejoras en la educación, en la vivienda y en el desarrollo económico de las comunidades, CCHD continúa teniendo un impacto positivo en las comunidades en todo el país. Su contribución servirá para defender la dignidad humana y llegar a todos los que viven al margen. Por favor, contribuya a la colecta para CCHD.

Requisitos para Matrimonio ♥ Hacer una entrevista con el Sacerdote. ♥ Certificado de Bautismo (copia reciente). ♥ Sacramentos de la 1ra Comunión y Confirmación. ♥ Acta de matrimonio del civil o licencia del civil. ♥ Dos fotos de cada uno, tamaño infantil. ♥ Asistir a 7 Clases Pre. Matrimoniales. Llamar a la oficina para hacer una cita con el sacerdote.

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe La vigilia y celebración a Nuestra Señora de Guada-lupe se aproxima y se llevará a cabo toda la noche. Necesitamos de su ayuda y donaciones de la comunidad.
