SACRED HEART PARISH IS SEEKING A DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Sacred Heart Catholic Church has an opening for a full-time Director of Music. The successful applicant will work as a vital

part of the parish staff team to bring the parish vision of ‘Inviting Everyone to Passionately Live the Gospel’ to

realization, specifically through the work of sacred music. Tasks include coordinating music to enhance the liturgical services of

the parish, including selecting music, playing the organ and piano for liturgies, directing choirs, coordinating cantors and

accompanists, and maintaining the pipe organ and piano. A full job description can be found at sacredheartaberdeen.net/

employment-opportunities. Interested candidates are asked to send a copy of their resume and an accompanying cover letter to

Fr. Mark Lichter, Pastor of Sacred Heart, at [email protected], or by mail to 502 2nd Ave

SE Aberdeen, SD 57401.

At Mass, just after we sing the Gloria and just before the lector reads from the Old Testament, the priest reads a prayer called the col-lect. This word is pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable, so it’s “CALL-ect.” The prayers are generally a single long sentence, and can be difficult for the congregation to follow (and, indeed, difficult for the priest to read). As a result, people often sort of tune the collect out. It becomes liturgical background noise, something to fill a brief gap between singing the Gloria and listening to the Old Testament.

Ideally, however, it should be more than that. The collect, as it presently exists at Mass, is an abbreviation of a more elaborate prac-tice. Centuries ago, the deacon would invite everyone to pray for someone or something, and then everyone would kneel and spend some time in silent prayer. Then everyone would stand, and the priest would recite a prayer out loud. The purpose of the priest’s ver-bal prayer was to gather together all the silent prayers that everyone had just offered. That, in fact, is why that prayer was called the collect—the word collect has its roots in a Latin term meaning a gathering-in of people. You can still see a form of this more elabo-rate version of the collect on Good Friday, during the Solemn Intercessions.

So at Mass, after the Gloria ends, when the priest says “Let us pray,” the prayer that the priest is inviting is silent, private prayer. The priest should pause long enough for everyone to call to mind their own needs and prayer intentions at that Mass. This is a wonderful time to take whatever is on your heart and lift it up to God, whether it’s a particular need or a prayer of gratitude. The spoken words of the collect then gather up all those private prayers and present them all to God as the unified prayer of everyone gathered for Mass.

Collects all follow a particular structure. In next week’s bulletin, I’ll walk us through the components of a typical collect. Here’s a parting thought for this week. As we’ve seen, the purpose of a collect is to gather the private prayers everyone has just lifted up to God. By their very nature, therefore, collects are going to seem rather abstract and bland. If you listen carefully to the words the priest says, or follow along in a pew missal, it may strike you that we’re not praying for anything terribly specific. This Sunday’s col-lect asks that God “graciously keep us from all adversity.” We can probably all concur with the sentiment, but it does sound as if the prayer doesn’t ask for anything specific. Well, it doesn’t, and that’s sort of the point.

One liturgist, Fr. Dennis Smolarski, explains that a collect should be “a summation of the sentiments of the assembly, gathered in prayer, attentive to God’s presence, and mindful of their needs and deficiencies.” Our private prayers should be very specific, but the collect that gathers them together must be abstract enough to describe all that we’re asking of God. It’s like a ribbon tied around bou-quet, which transforms all our personal prayers into a unified whole.

Sacrificial Giving and some thoughts….. We give thanks for our children. Here at Sacred Heart we do not see them as our future, but as our present. They bring us life and joy. We thank their parents for sharing their children with us. I thank you for your faithful stewartship. Your sac-rificial offerings have provided our children with an excellent Church, School, and Faith Formation programs. Help us to do God’s Will!
