Cristo parlava umanamente con noi,infra l' altre sue parole, ne disse chedell' abondanza del cuore parla lalingua.

When Our Lord Jesus Christspoke with us in human form, hesaid among other things, that thetongue speaks from the fulness of the heart. 

Voi ch'avete i cuori gentili e nobiliinfra li altri, acconciate le vostre mentie le vostre parole nel piacere di Dio,parlando, onorando e temendo elaudando quel Signore nostro che n'amò prima che elli ne criasse, e primache noi medesimi ce amassimo. E se inalcuna parte, non dispiacendo a lui, sipuò parlare, per rallegrare il corpo esovenire e sostentare, facciasi con più

onestade e con più cortesia che fare sipuote. 

You who have gentle and noblehearts above other men, shape yourminds and your words to thepleasure of God, speaking, honoringand fearing and praising Our Lordwho loved us even before Hecreated us, and before we ourselvesloved Him. And if in certain ways wemay, without giving Himdispleasure, speak for thegladdening of our bodies, and to

give ourselves aid and support, let itbe done with all the grace andcourtesy that may be. 

Et acciò che li nobili e ' gentili sononel parlare e ne l'opere molte voltequasi com' uno specchio appo i minori,acciò che il loro parlare è più gradito,però ch' esce di più dilicato stormento,facciamo qui memoria d'alquanti fioridi parlare, di belle cortesie e di belli

risposi e di belle valentie, di bellidonari e di belli amori, secondo cheper lo tempo passato hanno fatto giàmolti.

And since the noble and thegentle in their words and deeds areas a mirror for the lower folks, forthat their speech is more gracious,coming from a more delicateinstrument, let us call back tomemory some flowers of speech,

such fair courtesies and fine replies,valiant actions and noble gifts ashave in time gone by beencompassed by many.

simigliare per lo tempo che verrà perinnanzi, et argomentare e dire eraccontare in quelle parti dove avrannoluogo, a prode et a piacere di coloroche non sanno e disiderano di sapere.

If the flowers of speech we offeryou be mixed with other words, benot displeased, for black is anornament to gold, and a fair anddelicate fruit may sometimes adorna whole orchard; a few lovelyflowers an entire garden. 

Non gravi a' leggitori: che sonostati molti, che sono vivuti grande

lunghezza di tempo, e in vita lorohanno appena tratto uno bel parlare,od alcuna cosa da mettere in conto frai buoni. 

Nor should the readers takeoffence herein, that there have been

many who have lived long withoutscarcely uttering a fine phrase orcontributing anything of merit bytheir speech. 

[73] Come il Soldano, avendo bisognodi moneta, vuolle cogliere cagione a unGiudeo.

[73] How the Sultan being in needof money, sought to find occasion toproceed against a Jew.

Il Soldano, avendo mestiere dimoneta, fo consigliato che cogliessecagione ad uno ricco giudeo ch' era insua terra, e poi gli togliesse il mobilesuo, ch' era grande oltra numero.

The Sultan, being in need of money, was advised to proceedagainst a rich Jew, who lived in hiscountry, and to try to take away hissubstance from him.

Il Soldano mandò per questo Giudeoe domandollo qual fosse la migliorefede, pensando: "S' elli dirà la Giudea,io dirò ch' elli pecca contra la mia; e sedirà la Saracina, et io dirò: 'Dunque,perché tieni la Giudea?'"

The Sultan sent for this Jew andasked him what was the bestreligion, thinking: "He will saysurely the Jewish faith, when I willtell him that he sins againstmine. And if he says the Saracen, Iwill ask him: 'Why he is a Jew?'"

E 'l Giudeo, udendo la domanda delsignore, rispuose così: "Messere, elli fuun padre ch' avea tre figliuoli et aveaun suo anello con una pietra preziosa,la migliore del mondo. Questi figliuoli,ciascuno pregava il padre ch' alla suafine li lasciasse questo anello; e il

The Jew, hearing the question,replied: "Sire, there was a fatherwho had three sons, and he had aring with a precious stone, one of the finest in the world. Each of thesons begged this father that heshould leave him this ring at his

padre, vedendo che catuno il volea,mandò per un fino orafo e disse:'Maestro, fammi due anella così apunto come questo, e metti inciascuno una pietra che asomigli a

Mandò per li figliuoli aduno ad uno, et a catuno diede il suo insecreto, e catuno si credette avere ilfine: e niuno ne sapea il vero, altri che'l padre loro. E così è delle fedi,messere: le fedi sono tre: il Padre chelle diede sa la migliore, e li figliuoli (ciòsiamo noi), ciascuno la si crede avere

and his sons who are ourselves eachof us thinks he has the true one."

Allora il Soldano, udendo costui cosìriscuotersi, non seppe che si dire dicoglierli cagioni: sì lo lasciò andare.

Then the Sultan hearing the manget out of the difficulty in thismanner, did not know how to entraphim, and let him go.
