2016 Broward County Sports Hall of Fame NSU was well-represented at the recent Broward County Sports
Hall of Fame Reception and Induction Dinner. Our table was rec-
ognized during the opening remarks by Hall of Fame Committee
Member, Pat Lawlor. The event was a chance for our students to
network and recognize the achievements of the inductees. This
year’s HOF Class includes the following: Larry Blustein (Media),
Henri Crockett (Football), Zachary Crockett (Football), Keyon
Dooling (Basketball), Damian Huttenhoff (High School Athlet-
ics), Michael Leech (Fishing), Frank Pettineo (Wrestling) and
Laura Rountree (Soccer). The event is presented by the Greater
Fort Lauderdale Sports Development Office. Hats off to BSSA,
Nova’s Business of Sport Student Association. They are actively
participating with local events and getting a variety of experiences
to enhance their classroom education.

IN THE COMMUNITY
NSU was well represented last Friday at the
First Annual Fire Chief Joseph Montopoli Me-
morial Golf Tournament. Pictured above are
volunteers Jeff Paszternak, Cory Cody and
Professor Olson along with Town of Davie
Councilwoman Susan Starkey. To the right
are golfers Keith Smith, Assistant Athletic Di-
rector for Communications and External Oper-
ations, and Kim Carbo, Assistant Athletic Di-
rector for Marketing, Development and Fund-
raising. The Town of Davie Fire Rescue Be-
nevolent Association and the Davie Cooper
City Chamber of Commerce organized and
hosted the event which was held in memory of
Chief Montopoli who died unexpectedly on
February 1, 2016. Proceeds from the event
will benefit fire fighters in need and the Cham-
ber’s efforts with local businesses. Getting in-
volved with an event like this one supports one
of NSU’s Core Values:
COMMUNITY!

SUPPORT SAAC’S CLOTHING DRIVE
The Student-Athlete Advisory Com-
mittee (SAAC )is currently collecting
donated clothing and shoes for Breast
Cancer Awareness Month. The donated
items will be sent to the Florida Breast
Cancer Foundation thrift store, where
profits will go toward breast cancer re-
search.
Fill a bag with donated items and drop it off in the pink
bin located in the UC throughout the month of Octo-
ber.

SITE VISITS
Shawn Stricker (left) is pictured with Carlos, a Special Olympian, at a
recent bowling event at Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac.
Professor Olson got to see Shawn Stricker in action when she made a
site visit at one of several events which Shawn helps coordinate as part
of his internship with Special Olympics. Although the Special Olympics
office is on campus, Shawn finds himself going to sporting events and
visiting local schools to get Special Olympians involved with a variety
of sports programs.

SITE VISITS
Pictured above are John Colombo, Director of
Florida Panthers Community Relations & Grass-
roots Marketing, along with NSU intern Matthew
Smith .
The Florida Panthers are back on the ice and things are heating up in the Panthers “den!”
Professor Olson recently visited John and Matthew at the BB&T Center. Matt is busy earn-
ing internship hours as part of the Community Relations Department which works closely
with the Panthers Foundation. Here’s a sampling of how his log reads:
Coordinated Panther Patrol appearances
Fulfilled in-kind charitable requests
Prepared new inflatables for use on game days
Led on-ice instruction for Learn to Play hockey clinic
Assisted with game day activities such as outdoor pre-game party, Zamboni riders and an-
alytics research
Assisted with team signing
Met with A/V department to discuss plans for pre-game outdoor activities on the tarmac
Ordered giveaways for Panthers Patrol
It is obvious that Matt is not only learning about working for a professional team. He is con-
tributing in a very positive, useful way. Good luck to him and Go Panthers!
