The International Office

Applications are invited for the above post in one of the UK’s leading International Offices. The International Office plays a central role in supporting the development and implementation of The University’s Internationalisation Strategy 2020 which focuses on international student recruitment, mobility and exchange and study abroad programmes, international teaching partnerships and international support. The office supports students, staff and visitors from overseas. The University’s UK campuses are home to about 9,000 international and EU students representing more than 150 countries.

The successful candidate will play an important role in the leadership and management of the International Office with a particular focus on activities in both north and south America and the Europe. The role will ensure performance objectives and operational targets are met for international recruitment, teaching partnerships development and study abroad/exchange activity in target markets.

Candidates should have studied in the UK, be educated to at least Bachelors level and be able to demonstrate sound business acumen, strategic thinking and have proven ability to make things happen in an HE environment, working with sensitivity, tact and diplomacy. The successful candidate will demonstrate creative thinking and novel approaches to international student recruitment and will have a solid HE background with significant experience in an area of international office work managing existing and developing new markets. A professional marketing qualification is desirable.

You will be responsible for managing a team of staff, supporting, managing, mentoring and developing a UK based International Officer trainee, a Latin America International Relations Officer, and a network of recruitment representatives and building excellent relationships with the funding bodies in Latin Americas as well as supporting our Erasmus Mundus courses in Europe.

This role is a strategic position and will include developing new market-based business cases for initiatives, reviewing and developing our work in key markets with agents, sponsors, government funders, institutions combined with immediate core recruitment activity.

You will be able to trial new online social media engagement activity, measure and track impact, develop online advertising campaigns with subject specific recruitment focus.

You will have the chance to build your skills base around full-degree teaching partnerships activity, identifying and suggesting possible institutional partners and proposed.

You will work with a dynamic and highly committed management team, reporting to the Associate Director for International Student Recruitment and Marketing but working closely with the Associate Director for Partnerships and the Director of the office. Significant overseas travel overseas will form a key part of this position and a flexible and co-operative approach to working patterns is therefore required.

Main Responsibilities % time per year

1. To manage, direct and plan international student recruitment activities of your team in selected countries to help achieve institutional intake targets, including new market development where relevant.

To ensure appropriate levels of activity are maintained and adjusted in established markets, to provide cover outside the region of immediate responsibility and ensuring that continual improvement is made concerning international recruitment strategy.

Market specific responsibilities will include the full remit of traditional student recruitment activity, including market strategy development, event planning, enquiries follow up, attending recruitment fairs and activity effectiveness monitoring and close liaison with key academic schools/departments to leverage maximum international student recruitment opportunities.

To provide statistical and trend data and analysis on international recruitment, partnerships for senior management.

Fostering excellent working relationships with recruitment agents / other stakeholders.

2. To attend a range of internal and external events, including incoming sponsor and institutional visits, Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions Forums, committees, staff training sessions, workshops, bespoke advice to academic Schools and Departments etc. On occasion you will deputise for Associate Directors at meetings and in supporting delegations.

3. To act as line manager for identified members of staff. This will include staff selection, training, induction, goal setting, performance review and mentoring will form a crucial part of line management responsibilities. If necessary accompanying new recruits on overseas missions to provide “on the job” training as required.

4. In liaison with the Associate Director – Partnerships develop, negotiate and support teaching partnerships in the region, sourcing new partners, liaising with existing partners (including leading partner visits to the University), undertaking due diligence, supporting academic Schools with the negotiation of Memorandum of Agreements, ensuring approval of agreements and associated administration.

5. To manage relevant areas of budgetary monitoring and leading the planning and budgetary forecasting process for the regions.

6. To project manage initiatives as required and to significantly contribute to the wider International Office remit, working across all teams, including participation in and/or management of cross-office activities as may be agreed from time to time.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & ExperienceEssential Desirable

Qualifications/ Education

Educated to degree level, 2.2 classification or equivalent.

A professional qualification in, or significant previous experience of, marketing

Experience of working or studying outside the UK

Masters degree membership of the Chartered

Institute of Marketing

Skills/Training Excellent literacy, presentation and interpersonal skills with evidence of building effective working relationships at all levels and communicating across a wide range of internal and external audiences

IT skills, highly proficient in the use Microsoft Office

Highly organised, self-motivated and committed, with the ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision and find solutions to complex issues as they arise

Numerate with prior experience of budgetary management and/or statistical analysis

Project Management skills

Other This role will require the role holder to spend considerable time overseas each year.
