Notter Bridge Training

This Prospectus aims to provide a brief overview of the most popular courses we offer. If you require training not mentioned in the brochure courses can be specially designed or outside specialist trainers can be brought in. Course content can also be adjusted to suit your individual needs.

The Training Centre is situated within easy reach of the A38 - 3 miles west of Saltash half a mile east of Landrake.

Facilities include training rooms fitted with ceiling mounted PowerPoint projection and Internet access. An extensive outdoor practical training area and a 75m long all weather covered practical training area.

Courses can be held 7 days a week at Notter Bridge or at a local venue more suitable to the client.

All our training staff are experienced in Highways Construction and Maintenance, Health and Safety, Plant Operation, Civil Engineering and Traffic Management. Specialist trainers are also used to supplement the Training Centre staff.

All course fees are available on request and include refreshments. No extra charge is made for training carried out in employers’ premises within a 50 mile radius of Notter Bridge.

Some courses may involve an additional charge levied by the Awarding Body in respect of certificates and registration.

Notter Bridge Training is currently an approved training organisation for specific courses with the following organisations. A number of courses are also approved for Driver CPC:

Health and safety

Site First AidThis course is designed for site operatives and covers the types of injuries and conditions that could be encountered on a construction site.

The course covers the following:

First Aid Principles and Equipment, CPR techniques, blood loss and bleeding, fractures and other emergencies and assessment.

Employers could use successful completion of this course to appoint people under the First Aid at Work Regulations 1981.

Course duration: 1 day Maximum delegates: 10 7 Hours CPC

InductionThis course is designed for new employees who are involved in construction/maintenance work on the highway. The course includes Health, Safety and Welfare, Manual Handling, Site First Aid, Traffic Management/ Chapter 8, Fire Control, Plant and Equipment Safety and Abrasive Wheels.

Course duration: 5 days Maximum delegates: 10

N.B. A 1 day course is available for temporary employees.

Fire ExtinguisherA course designed for employees who have access to and may need to use fire extinguishers. The course will include:

Fire Prevention and Procedures, Types of Fire Extinguishers, Correct Use of Extinguishers (Practical), After Use Procedures.

Course duration: ½ day Maximum delegates: 10 3.5 Hours CPC

Manual HandlingMuscle and spinal injuries account for between 25-40% of all workplace injuries to employees. This course is designed for employees in all types of workplace and the content can be adjusted accordingly.

The course includes:

Common types of injury, lifting and handling capacities, lifting and handling methods, equipment and problems with handling.

Course duration: ½ - 1 day Maximum delegates: 10 3.5 Hours CPC

Excavation Safety and Support (excavations up to 2.5m deep)This course is essential for operatives who are required to work in excavations. It provides the knowledge to be able to select and use various trench support systems. The course includes:

Types of soil and ground conditions, Hazard identification and risk assessment, Installation, inspection and removal methods for basic and proprietary support systems.

Systems include:Traditional methods of trench timbering, Hydraulic Vertishores, Sheet piles and hydraulic waler systems.

Course duration: 2 days for experienced operatives or 3 days for novices Maximum numbers – 8

CITB Health and Safety AwarenessThis one day course is aimed at site operatives and will help them understand the potential hazards they may face on site.

The course identifies the legal duties of both employees and employers and will assist the site operative in contributing to a safe and healthy workplace. The course is also ideal preparation for those operatives who are about to undertake the CSCS Health and Safety touch screen test.

Course duration: 1 day Maximum delegates: 10

Chapter 8 Traffic Management TrainingThis course is designed for operatives, supervisors, managers and engineers who carry out or are responsible for works which are in or encroach upon the public highway.

This is a more comprehensive course than the Signing, Lighting and Guarding unit of the New Roads and Streetworks Act Qualification. Included in the course are LegalRequirements, Personal and Public Safety, Hazard Awareness, Selection and Use of Signs, Cones, Barriers and Lamps, Safety Clearances, Footway Works, Traffic Control Measures and Single Vehicle Works.

Successful completion of an assessment will result in certification.

Course duration: 1-2 days depending upon experience. Maximum delegates: 12

Traffic Management for Community EventsA course for those involved in organising events that affect the public highway and require the placement of signs on the highway.The course includes:

• Event Management Guidance • Safety at Streetworks and Roadworks• Completing TM Plans and Applications • Design Considerations• Road Closures • Sign Placement and Removal

Risk assessment **A course for site operatives, chargehands & supervisors who are required to conduct site risk assessments.The course includes, legislation relating to risk assessments, hazard identification, risk rating, 5 steps to risk assessment, practical exercises relating to risk assessment.

Course duration: ½ day Maximum delegates: 10

** Safety Method Statements may be added to the course. This ½ day module includes purpose, contents, communication of method statements and practical work based activities.

Slinger/ SignallerThis course is designed for site operatives who, as part of their duties, may be involved in lifting/lowering of loads. The course is mainly of a practical nature and will include the following:

Legal Requirements, Lifting Accidents, Hazard Awareness, Lifting Accessories, Marking Codes, Typical Defects, Slinging, Signalling and Assessment.

Course duration: 1 day Maximum delegates: 8

Banksman - Reversing VehiclesA course aimed at supervisors and operatives responsible for the marshalling and manoeuvring of vehicles on construction sites and in depots. The course consists of classroom and practical sessions and will include the following.

Current legal requirements, hazard recognition and risk awareness, HSE/RTA recommended hand signals, vehicle control practical exercises.

Course duration: 3.5 hours Maximum Trainees: 8

Abrasive WheelsA course for operatives who use, mount and change abrasive wheels in the construction industry. The course will include Legal Requirements, Fault Finding, Hazard Identification, Correct Mounting, Testing Truing and Dressing, Correct Use of Equipment and Assessment.

Types of Equipment will include portable cut-off saws, angle and bench grinders.

Course duration: ½ day Maximum delegates: 8

Cable Avoidance and LocationIncreasingly services are being installed in the ground. Accidentally damaging these services can be both dangerous and costly. This course is designed for operatives who carry out excavation work and supervisors who have responsibility for them. The course includes:

Legal Responsibilities, HSG47, Types of Hazards and Injuries, Use of Statutory Plans, Detection Equipment, Energising Equipment and accessories.

Operatives and supervisors may be assessed against unit 1 of the New Roads and Streetworks Act Qualifications if required.

Course duration: 1 day Maximum delegates: 10

Safe use of LaddersA course for operatives carrying out low risk short duration work where ladders, step ladders are the most reasonably practicable option. Included in this course:

Legislation relevant to working at height, Hazard identification and Risk Assessment, Selection and Inspection of Equipment, Setting up, securing and use, Storage - inspection and recording, Identification of defects, Practical exercises.

Driver CPCNotter Bridge Training Centre is a member of the Highways and Construction Training Association Driver Certificate of Professional Competence Consortium.This scheme is designed to provide a flexible way for LGV & PCV drivers to obtain their Driver Qualification Card. A number of 3.5, 7 and 14 hour courses are already approved for driver CPC.

Where a significant need for training is identified and the subject area for the training is identified to a driver role or responsibilities it may be possible to add other courses to the approved course list below, subject to the approval of the authorising body.
