Volume 26 1 September NOTRE DAME NEWS FOUNDATIONS FOR LIFE-LONG LEARNING FROM THE PRINCIPAL Notre Dame ` My Father didn’t tell me how to live; He LIVED and let me watch him do it. Clarence B. Kelland Dear Parents This Sunday we celebrate Fathers’ Day. For a variety of reasons the contact that we have at school is more oHen with the children’s mums so we welcome the opportunity tomorrow morning to provide breakfast for the dads and their children from 7.30 – 8.30am. ParenQng is one job that we are rarely trained to do but most of us seem to manage, certainly geTng it wrong at Qmes but, as long as we maintain a strong relaQonship with our children, it generally works out in the end. I wish all dads a great day on Sunday and hope their children make them feel very special. URSULA FRAYNE PILGRIMAGE Yesterday Jian Chilton, Ryllie Mack and Albin Manoj, all from Year 5, along with Mrs Nicolle Achmad, represented our school in retracing the steps of Ursula Frayne, the first Mercy Sister to arrive in Australia in 1846. Mrs Achmad and the students joined with staff and students from 13 other primary schools with a Mercy Charism, along with 6 Sisters of Mercy and Dr Debra Sayce, Director of Religious EducaQon, Catholic EducaQon WA and 3 members of her staff. The enthusiasm of the day wasn’t dampened by the wet weather and, aHer a short drive from Perth the Pilgrims arrived at Santa Maria College in A^adale where they were greeted by “Ursula Frayne” and received a pilgrim shell, Year of Mercy medal and a scroll explaining their significance. They watched a video presentaQon which set the scene about the Qme when Ursula first arrived in Fremantle before heading down to the port where they boarded a boat which followed the same route up the Swan River that Ursula would have travelled 170 years ago. Our boat was much larger and more comfortable than the one that Ursula used but listening to audio presentaQons along the way put everything into context. The group arrived at Barrack St Je^y at around midday and proceeded to visit places of significance to Ursula’s arrival in Perth. The Bishop of the day had promised the Sisters accommodaQon upon their arrival but there was none available and he had also assured them that there would be 4000 students for them to teach. When they opened school on the site of today’s Mercedes College they had only one student arrive in the morning and by the end of the first day they had an enrolment of six; a far cry from the promised 4000! From this very small beginning the Sisters grew to currently have 43 Mercy schools in Western Australia and many more throughout the country. Our day concluded with a visit to the Mercy Heritage Centre at Mercedes College. Along the way the children collected their Pilgrimage wristbands, a quill and ink that is similar to what Ursula would have used to

SURF ONLINE SAFE Paul Litherland 2016 | SURF ONLINE SAFE | W : www.surfonlinesafe.com.au | FB www.facebook.com/SurfOnlineSafe | E : [email protected]

Notre Dame Catholic Primary School Parent Representative Council have the pleasure of hosting an important and valuable seminar for all parents presented by Mr Paul Litherland -Surf OnLine Safe.

Date and Time: Wednesday 7th September 2016 commencing at 6.30pm

Location: Notre Dame Catholic Primary School Library/hall

Cost: Free for Notre Dame Catholic Primary School parents and carers

Please advise if you will be able to attend by completing the return form to class teachers today. Or alternatively complete Trybooking to secure a place. Please follow these direct links: https://www.trybooking.com/MINP OR https://www.trybooking.com/216673.

Surf Online Safe presentation is not simply about "Don't do this or don't do that". Paul offers audiences a real world understanding of where our kids are going online and introduces ways of helping them understand and embrace that environment. Rather than scaring them off the internet, he will help build an understanding of how to grow with your kids online to build a culture within the home and at school toward appropriate internet use. A culture that gives their kids the freedom to explore and interact with their peers online, whilst still understanding the concerns their parents have in regard to their Online Footprint and Digital Citizenship.

He has very positive feedback from parents and to view Paul's credentials: visit au.linkedin.com/in/surfonlinesafe or www.surfonlinesafe.com.au/about.html
