(12-12, 19) Using all of the body PASTOR MARC DE WAARD Chancellor Reformed Church One month ago, a family of five moved into our home, as they await their Sioux Falls home to be ready for them. One of those five is our little 2 ½ year old grand-daughter who is just as cute as a but- ton. This Opa (grandpa) loves it when she raises her arms, hands outstretched and says, “Opa, up!” Of course, I oblige. Other times she wants to sit on my foot, clinging to my leg as I walk around. Due to this season I may have to pretend to be a donkey and carry her on my back. This “Opa-ing” sure demands a lot of my body! And that got me to thinking about worship and Christmas and their demands on a body. Shepherds used their feet to walk to Bethlehem. Mary used her face and smiled at all the guests she received. Magi used their bottoms to ride on camels and they used their knees and hands. Matthew 2 tells us that going into the house, they saw the Child with Mary His mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. Here are the wise-men, considered professors and perhaps kings in their home country, falling down, kneeling, using their hands to proffer gifts to the King of kings. If they did, why shouldn’t we? This Christmas I’m chal- lenging you the readers, to use more than your voices to sing, or your seaters to be on pews. I’m asking you to engage more fully in worship. O Holy Night tells us to fall to our knees (An act of adoration for our being saved? In an act of contrition or confession?). Do that in the middle of a service. Raise your hands as you pray (1 Tim. 2:8), or as you sing, We give You all the glory.... See the hands of the Christ baby reaching out to you – and accept the gift that His Father offers you, that of a relationship with the Maker of Heaven and Earth – through His Son. If you’ve walked or turned away from God, why not run back to Him now, and see Him, as the prodigal son did, waiting for you with outstretched arms. Mary used her heart, her spirit and mind to “ponder things” – something she did for the rest of her life, even as the foot of the cross as she watched the Christ be crucified. Ponder and meditate on Christ’s love for you, seen in the nail-holes in His hands. Knowing that you have sinned and are in great need of a Savior, lift up your hands. Your raised hands signify that you’ve surrendered your life to Him, and that you now can live victoriously in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. At this Christmas Eve service, hold your lit candle and declare to the Lord your desire to be a light for Him. And when the minster pronounces the ben- ediction, stand straight, face raised to heaven, and sense the Father’s countenance shining upon yours, and then hear God silently say these words: “I love You. My favor rests upon you.” Yes, this Christmas season, let us all use body actions and language to more greatly praise the One who is the Reason for the Season. Celebrating in song … Last week Sunshine Preschool in Lennox held their holiday concert. Teachers Ms. L and Miss Marissa helped the young singers entertain the audience with songs. The selections included: Coming Down the Chimney, The Lights on the Tree, What color is Rudolph’s Nose (sign language), 5 Little Snow- man, and We wish you a Merry Christmas.
