Back when Sade Okoya married her husband Razak Okoya 20 years ago, many people probably did not think it would last that long because of the age gap - she was in her
20s and he was in his 50s. Many wrongly assumed the worst. But here they are, two decades later still going strong. Not only had she matured and blossomed to a
beautiful woman, her husband is as spritely as ever and looks decades younger. This is what happens when a couple brings out the best in each other. Marriage, as everyone knows is not a bed of roses and both parties have to be willing to put in the required effort to make it successful. Some might say it’s easier said than done especially if the husband is not a billionaire as is the case here. But they
forget to realize that it takes more than just money to keep a marriage healthy. It takes more than physical appearances to keep the loins awake. It takes more than
aesthetics to keep them home aglow with warmth. It takes more than jokes to keep the laughter coming. It takes more than ignorance to uproot unrest. So many people
judge a book by its cover and as long as it ‘appears’ okay to the public...then it is fine! I admire couples that regardless of their age difference, finance or lack thereof, they have learnt
that no matter how beautiful roses are, some come with thorns but…a rose is a rose! Once planted, you nurture, and if need be, cut out the thorns to preserve the rose. This is what is most important. Dotted lines, once signed, should be given its very best shot before it is erased. Marriage is not matters of life and death, l agree, but it would be foolish to also expect it to be a walk in the park. Without a doubt, the ultimate glue for a successful union is prayers. They are food for the soul, the guidebook to follow when the journey becomes too rough. A good marriage is a blessing but a bad marriage is like a sore that either needs to be treated by any means possible or amputated to save the lives of the people carrying it.
The OKOYAS have a lovely story to tell and what is clear is that no matter how beautiful or young you are compared to your husband, you too have to be bring something of value to the table as Sade has done so you can earn his respect. And even if what you bring is not necessarily financial, the role you play in keeping your family together cannot be quantified financially.

“43 years with the ring on the finger and 66 happy cheers” was the WhatsApp message Lanre and Modupe Ogunlesi sent out to close family and friends to mark their 43rd wedding anniversary and 66th birthday.
It was a grand indoor luncheon party as about 150 guests converged at their Maryland residence for a sumptuous sit down 4-course meal. The table setting was luxurious and was all it needed to make the venue flamboyant. A healthy menu carefully put together by the couple. Exotic wine, champagne, cognac, etc. were served with a smile. Guests thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they chatted over low tempo music provided by Don Williams and later danced the afternoon away. The Luncheon party was preceded by Thanksgiving Mass at Catholic Church of the Presentation GRA Ikeja. Lanre is the CEO of Sofisticat/Skin Beauty Limited while Modupe is the CEO of Adam & Eve.

Bring a full skirt
into play to camouflage the troublesome hip
and thigh area and minimize
the waist.
Choose dark shades
to minimize and light/pastel tones to
highlight. Pay attention to combinations and
patterns: do not wear too many patterns and
colours on the body parts you want to hide.
Solid colours or two-tone combinations
are best.
Cinch your waist

HOW TO
TO LOOK
THINNERDRESS
Tuck an oversize,
boxy top into a high waist skirt to

You can even
go multi-tonal. Find a pair of two-toned
denim shirt and style it with a denim
bottom in a completely different wash. It looks
really cool!
If you must
wear one wash of denim make sure the wash is very distinct. This way the look is
peculiar and your denim outfit is not regular
jeans and denim shirt.
TWICE DENIM
THE TWICE GOODAS
Denim is a versatile and timeless fabric and has become a part of our lives but the question is should you or shouldn’t you double up on your denim? Here at STYLE, we’re of the firm opinion that twice the denim = twice as good. Here are some great ways on how to make it look hot and trendy. If you want to know some tips and tricks on how to make this fabulous trend work for you, then you better keep on reading.

Lastly, your lesson
101 on denim on denim won’t be complete if you haven’t matched
a pair of ripped denim pant with a pair of biker
denim jacket.
Choose the top in a
lighter wash and your bottom in darker hue
or vice versa. Never wear matching shades;
otherwise, you risk looking like wearing a
kind of onesie.
The combination
of ripped denim with a tailored shirt. Personally, we love with this look. The
structured denim shirt tucked into distressed jean shorts looks really awesome and
wonderful.
When you wear
double denim trend, keep it to your clothes. Never
overdose on this look by sporting denim bag, hat, etc.
Your accessories can be either casual or formal, but never
forget that denim has a casual appearance.

DOUBLE SPREADDIAMOND BANK AD
According to a new study, the best point in marriage is 20 years after which is very
evident in the marriage of billionaire business industrialist Razak Okoya and his
beautiful wife Sade recently celebrated their 20th year wedding anniversary. The
couple have come a long way despite all the ups and downs that came with their
union, proving that true love does conquer all. Sade has been a source of untold
happiness to her much older husband, Rasaq and has certainly added some bounce
to his steps. He in return has not failed to show his appreciation of her prominent
presence in his life. Seeing the couple together, it is hard to imagine that such an
age difference exists between them because they are so in sync with each other. In
this interview, they share their love story after four children and the legacy they
plan to leave behind for them. FUNKE BABS- KUFEJI reports.
20 TH ANNIVERSARY OF
RAZAK & SADE OKOYA
How did you meet your wife Sade and what attracted you to her?
I met her at my home in Ikoyi Crescent when she came visiting. She looked very gentle and nice. She was neat and very shy, well mannered and respectful. Those were some some of the qualities I saw and admire about her that attracted me to her.
20 years later, what will you say about your wife? She has proven to be a devoted and loving wife over the years.
She respects and appreciates my business ideas. She organizes and puts everything together in the house, I just walk in and out and everything is done by her. She wakes up daily to go to the factory early in the morning and comes back late in the night. She’s not a lazy wife and I respect her for this.
Has the age difference between you two had any negative effect on your marriage and how were you able to overcome it and also what positive effects did this age gap have on your marriage?
The age difference has had a positive impact on our marriage, she’s quite quick to learn and always willing to make things right. She understands the importance of staying married and wants to do everything to maintain it.
In a recent interview you granted, you said “Sade was the one who consolidated my empire, she walked in and solidified everything you see today”. Can you tell us a bit more about that statement?
I have had several failed marriages in the past and I believe she learnt from all those mistakes. Irrespective of all odds; she got
married at an early age and had to learn quickly. She has since been loyal and faithful and I respect her for that.
The manufacturing sector is believed to be a male dominated industry and she has managed to thrive in it. I find it very challenging and I love and enjoy the ups and down it brings, also knowing that I run one of the biggest manufacturing companies in Nigeria ably supported by her is comforting because she has learnt the ropes.
Eleganza has been under the storm in the recent past, trying to survive in the industrial sector as a result of past mismanagement and planning which led to my factory incurring lot of debts and liability. I had to diversify into property investment on a large scale just to keep the staff employed. During this period, we had to concentrate on the property side to keep everything together. I thank God for the new Eleganza Industrial City with new Directors and management. I want my legacy Eleganza to live on and that is the path I am on now. Insha Allah.
I love what I do and as a result, I don’t see myself working because when you enjoy your job it becomes a hobby. But to be successful and able to maintain market leadership over the years, you must be intelligent on how to diversify as and when necessary.
The Federal Government should stop the importation of goods that can be produced locally into the country and increase the custom and excise duties on imported finished goods. They should also ensure that goods are fully monitored at the port of
entry, because some importers are involved in sharp practices, denying the government the required revenue and also killing the local manufacturers. Smuggled goods are also killing the manufacturing industries. Government should also improve on power supply and promote more technical schools, this would assist with the rate of unemployment.
Lastly, it is very concerning that young men of marriageable age are shying away from taking up the responsibility of marriage because of lack of financial stability and many other excuses. What
is your advice to young men of marriageable age? When we started doing business, there were
lots of business opportunities in Nigeria at that time compared to today, now there are too many business competitors. So many products have flooded the Nigerian market which makes it very difficult for the local industries to succeed.
The mindset of the youths of nowadays is to make quick money, in my time, young individuals were encouraged to set their goals and achieve them.
In Nigeria today there are many factors to consider before men will want to go into marriage. So many graduates are unemployed, a lot of unemployed graduates and jobless youths want White collar job which is not available in the country; the demand is more than the supply.
I believe government has a lot to do in term of helping the society so everyone can do things at the age that they require it. Today’s youths have a lot of expectation from the country. Private sectors like mine are doing the best we can do in terms of giving people employment irrespective of the various issues we go through daily.
Every young man needs the basic things before marriage so they can provide for their homes and family.
A lot of young graduates are just wasting away and government needs to look at other areas to produce more jobs in term of technical training, vocational, agriculture school etc. As unemployment rate is increasing so also will unmarried youth rate increase because everything is tied to each other.
RAZAK I have had several failed
marriages in the past and I believe Sade learnt from all those mistakes. Irrespective of all odds; she got married at an early age and had to learn quickly. She has since
been loyal and faithful and I respect her for that.

THISDAY Style Vol. 22, No. 8802 Sunday, June 2, 2019
I made my choice from the very beginning when I met my
husband that there was no going back irrespective of what people said or thought about me marrying at a very young
age to someone a lot older than I was. To me, failure wasn’t an option and God
heard my prayers.
SADE After 20 years of being married to a powerful business industrialist such as Razak Okoya, what will you say has been the secret to the success?
No secret at all. God has been very good and kind to me. I am a loving, caring, loyal and understanding wife, and I respect and cherish my husband with all my heart.
You met your husband in your 20’s while he has well over 50, what had to change for both of you to make the union smoother?
My husband didn’t really have to change anything at all as he was already set in his ways. When I married him, I knew I had to mould myself to his way to sustain my marriage; it wasn’t easy initially because with such a successful man he would want everything done his own way. I did not want any failure concerning my marriage so I had to sacrifice a lot and quickly learn his ways. Looking back now, it wasn’t really that difficult. I am more mature and wiser now and see things differently.
With a man like my husband you just need God’s wisdom and understanding to hold the house and family together. We have reached a stage in our lives now where we both understand each other and love each other very much.
I am always grateful to God for blessing me with such a wonderful husband and friend.
You married into a polygamous home which most times, people believe is a hostile environment to live in, but this hasn’t been your case. How have you been able to balance between your husband’s first wife and older children?
Yes I married into a polygamous home but God has been good and he helped me plan well in the Okoya’s home.
There is a high rate of separations and divorce in Nigeria, which wasn’t the norm in the generation of our parents, what do you think is responsible this?
First, to stay in a marriage with our culture and society, one needs wisdom. Men always want to be respected, appreciated and be able to trust that their partner will be loyal. Men also like to be in control so it is very important to know this as a woman before you go into a marriage. A lady must try as much as possible to give her all and hold nothing back; it might seem difficult at first but it pays off at the end because with time, the man most times, reciprocates multiple fold.
I learnt early in my marriage that I should accept that I am wrong (even when I know I am right) for the sake of peace, as arguing will not get me anywhere. I don’t like to upset myself and I try as much as possible to resolve issues on time. Considering my husband is much older, I must be respectful and loyal, this is all I think it takes. Younger couples need this same therapy irrespective of the age gap.
20 Years of marriage is commendable and we can categorically say you have a PHD in staying married, what advice will you give young couples going into relationships or married couples who have lost hope in their marriage helping them stay together?
I made my choice from the very beginning when I met my husband that there was no going back irrespective of what people said or thought about me marrying at a very young age to someone a lot older than I was. To me, failure wasn’t an option and God heard my prayers.
There is nothing like a loving family to take you through the journey of life and with Prayers and God’s favour, which I believe every home needs, my marriage has been successful. I can categorically say I have a wonderful husband and family and I am happy where I
am and looking forward to what the future has in store for us all. Couples need to respect one another always. Tolerance, understanding with a lot of prayers for peace in marriage all work together, no one should ever take their partner for granted in all situations.
It is a fact that many women are finding it hard to find a life partner. Some will say the men don’t want to be responsible, others say the women are gold diggers. What is your take on this?
I don’t believe there is a particular formula to keeping a marriage; two people have to see and love each other to be able to agree to come together as husband and wife. Personally I do not believe in ladies being called ‘gold diggers’ as it takes a lot more than money to stay and keep a marriage. I see lot of rich wives getting out of marriages immediately they get in while some ladies are praying and dying to be in their shoes.
As for the men being called irresponsible, all men can’t be equal in terms of getting their objectives and goals together. Some men just need to be pushed and encouraged, and if you truly love the person you partner with, you will help him to see and achieve his potential which he himself might not even know he has. There is a right woman for every man, one just needs to be wise and smart while choosing a life partner because there is just so much to consider before coming together as man and wife. One needs a strong bond to take them through the storms of marriage and of course prayers too.
You have evolved over the years. You have been conferred with a doctorate, taken up leadership roles in Eleganza, rebranded products and introduced new ones. What are your future plans for Eleganza?
I have done a lot, in terms of restructuring, leadership, organizing, growth and saving costs in all that we do at the new Eleganza Industrial City. The future plan is for Eleganza Industrial City to be the number one manufacturing organization in the whole of Africa. Since I assumed office as Managing Director (MD), I have repositioned the company in a positive environment. The company suffered major lapses in the past, however, the company has come aboard in a much bigger , better and structured environment with a new vision and mission to make it the No 1 producer of all household items. Today I am proud to say that Eleganza is bigger, stronger and producing the highest quality of goods across all products.
Along the Lekki/Epe express, the Eleganza factory
is being developed. What is the long-term goal? The new Eleganza Industrial City is a massive project
on 35 hectares of land. It is called an Industrial City for the production of all kinds of household items and more. My chairman, who is also my husband, is so passionate about the project and Allah has been so kind and good to him in terms of giving him the strength and health to achievehis dreams and goals. He is a known industrialist and he enjoys what he does.
There are no outside commitments involved in Eleganza Industrial City Limited. It is solely financed by the Chairman and we intend to keep it that way as Allah has been providing from his grace of wealth. I resume early at the factory daily from Monday to Saturday, working to make sure things run smoothly. I have gained a lot from his wealth of experience in business and building and and I really appreciate that because it has also help me to remain committed in my daily life.
We have different types of products being produced in Eleganza Industrial City Limited and many more to come. We currently produce plastic chairs, tables, school tables for all ages and iron beds, iron clothes stand hangers, cooling boxes, food warmers, luggage of different sizes and design, baby diapers, sanitary pads, beauty laundry multipurpose soaps, hair vinyl thread, pet cap and preform bottles, ladies shoes and men slippers, disposable and reusable plates and cups, hair extensions, aluminum roofing sheet, shaving sticks, biros and more. We are currently working on bringing back our beauty range of products. Like we say, “Eleganza, the name is your guaranty”.
Can you give us a recap of what a typical day in your life is like?
I will say I am a structured and organized person, I plan myself in such a way that all my roles are being met. I don’t compromise on any of my duties and I can’t get myself to leave one for the other. I see to my husband’s needs personally no matter how busy or tired I am. I cook his meals daily. I also create time to attend to my motherly roles and ensure family dinner is not compromised as we all need to recap on what we have done during the day as well as still focus on the factory. Setting up and running an industry in Nigeria is not easy and so many factors needs to be in place to be able to work effectively.
This is my own definition of a typical day, exactly the way I plan it to be except in few unforeseen instances.
It is very daunting to be all three of the aforementioned. businesswoman, wife and mother. How are you able to fine a balance?
Proper planning and making use of my time, principles of planning can’t be overlooked, especially if you want lines to keep falling in pleasant places.
You have managed to maintain a svelte figure even after four children. What do you do to look this good?
I will say it’s peace of mind and having a happy home irrespective of all I handle daily. I don’t put myself under unnecessary pressure and I don’t aim for what I can’t achieve. One has to be very content in life as you can’t have it all, just make good use of what you have and work around it to see if life will double or triple it. I don’t compromise on what I eat, I eat to be satisfied and not to be full. I am very passionate about good food and I put a lot into this area. My food has to be hot and fresh, dinner is something we all look forward to in my house because that is the only meal time that brings us all together as a family. I love good food and it is part of the reason I love to cook. Cooking is part of
me because I do it daily. Health is also very important and body care is a key
to good looking and being agile of which I am thankful for.
What are your thoughts on body enhancement that is currently a fad in our society today?
Body enhancement is either for medical reason if one needs it or cosmetic needs. I have nothing against it, both encompass a range of technologies across very different disciplines.
Being married to a prominent man as his youngest wife, people have speculated so much about you, is there one misconception you will like to correct and what will surprise people to know about you?
Right from the onset, I have always had that principle to just focus on myself and do what pleases me, I
don’t need to know what people think about me or what they expect from me because that will distract my focus and attention. My husband has had many wives in the past but that has nothing to do with my presence.
With my knowledge about life so far, I have learnt that it is impossible to please all humans, so l am only focused on being the best I can and not being biased.
As a woman who loves to look good at all times, can you describe your style?
Style to me is being able to express myself through what I wear and to be comfortable in my own skin.
Presentation is everything and I believe my style is to look clean and neat always.
What is the one item in that bag you can’t leave home without?
I will say makeup, you will always find my lip balm and blending brush in my bag. With the kind of work I do, my face is always moist and my lips very dry. Factory work is not easy.
Do you have any pet peeves?I do not like it when one is not organized or tidy. I
don’t like people telling lies around me or when they take me for granted.
Finally, to your husband on your milestone-wedding anniversary, what will you like to say to him?
My husband and I are old fashioned. My marriage stood the test of time because Allah wanted it to be, and my prayer is for him to continue to bless and guide our home. My husband knows my loyalty and my love for him is unconditional. I will continue to love and respect him and I pray that we both live many more years together. Amen.
With a man like my husband you just need God’s wisdom
and understanding to hold the house and family together. We have reached a
stage in our lives now where we both understand each other and love each other
very much.

When it comes to creating a chic and statement-making look, an all-white ensemble is a perfect option. Taking minimal to the maximum in the best of ways, head-to-toe white is a simultaneously understated and bold style. As such, it can
suit almost any occasion, including formal and casual events. Likewise, white also works all year round, appearing light in
the hotter months and luxurious in the not so hot months. So, why get bogged down in black when you could be rocking
glorious white? Another thing interesting about the white colour is the pristine look it has. Many a time, because of its high maintenance, the colour is an indication
of your neatness. It is not only angelic and depicts innocence, it also throws in some sex appeal which actually makes a somewhat complicated, yet very open statement. Don’t even bother to understand contradiction of the vibe.
Just enjoy it!
