1 NOTEWORTHY FORTHCOMING AND RECENT EVENTS Profs. Nickolas Themelis of Columbia and Marco Castaldi of CCNY are chairing and will be presenting at the two WTE sessions of the ISWA International Congress in Baltimore (date). There will also be presentations by Demetra Tsiamis (WTERT- CCNY) and Thanos Bourtsalas (WTERT-Columbia). A highlight of the Congress will be a CEO panel discussion in which Mr. Steve Jones (Covanta) and Mr. Chen Xiaoping (Everbright). Mr. Kevin Cheng of the Earth Engineering Center at Columbia represented GWC at a Jensen Combustion meeting on boilers fueled by biomass waste materials in Montreal (Sept14-15. 2017). In August 2017, Adjunct Prof. Bourtsalas of Columbia University spent two weeks in Chile meeting with Prof. Alex Godoy of WTERT-Chile and industrial leaders interested in introducing WTE in Chile. Prof. Bourtsalas presented at the University of Desarollo (August 18). In addition, he was invited speaker at a seminar organized by the Columbia Global Center in Santiago (August 25) as well as presented at the University of La Frontera (August 30) and the University of Concepcion (September 1). In the summer of 2017, Prof. Themelis made keynote presentations at the MatER (WTERT-Italy) international Conference organized by Prof. Stefano Consonni in Piacenza, Italy (May 22-24); and the Waste Management Conference organized by Prof. Maria Loizidou in Athens, Greece (June 23). Prof. Bourtsalas represented the Earth Engineering Center and the GWC at the Earth Day in Texas, Dallas (April 22). Prof. Bourtsalas presented at the North America WTE Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota (April 25). Prof. Bourtsalas participated and presented at the WTERT-India Conference in Nagpur (April 11-12). Also, he was invited speaker at a seminar organized by the Columbia Global Center in Mumbai (April 17) as well as presented at MS Ramaiah University in Bangalore (April 18). He participated and presented at a roundtable hosted at IIT Delhi, where all the major stakeholders of waste management attended (April 19). Dr. Thanos Bourtsalas made presentations on the WTE technology at ministerial level meetings organized by UNECE in Hong Kong (May 9 -11) and Astana, Kazakhstan (June 11-14). Dr. Thanos Bourtsalas represented the GWC at the Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) on the beneficial uses of WTE bottom ashes in Singapore (March 2015). This project is supported by the National Environmental Agency (NEA), started in 2013 and expected to finish in December 2017.
