VOLUME 4 . 1935.

NOTES ON SEVENTEEN GENERA OF RHOPALOCERA

By FRANCIS HEMMING, C.B.E., F.R.E.S.

THE following notes have been made in the course of recent work.

(a) Twelve genera of which the types are hereJixed for theJirst time.

SATYRIDAE. Dichothyris, Karsch, 1893, Berl. ent. Z., 38 : 203.

TYPE = Mycalesis sambulos, Hew., 1877. Though valid nomenclatorially, the name Dichothyris, Karsch, is not

required, as sambulos, Hew., is congeneric with evadne, Cram., the type of Mycalesis, Hb.

Celebina, Fruhstorfer, 1898, Ent. Ztg., Stettin, 59 : 263. TYPE = Celebina inga, Fruhst., 1898. Though valid nomenclatorially, the name Celebina, Fruhst., is not required,

as iiaga, Fruhst., is congeneric with evadne, Cram., the type of Mycalesis, Hb.

MaguZa, Fruhstorfer, 1911, in Seitz, Grossschmett. Erde, 9 : 313. TYPE = Zophoessa*jalaurida, de Nic., 1880. The name Magula, Fruhst., is invalid, as it is a homonym of Magulc (Megerle

&IS.), Scudder, 1882 (Nomencl. zool. 1 Suppl. List : ZOO), a name to which Scudder gave a status by making it a synonym of Trochus, Linn., 1758. The name Magula, Fruhst., does not need replacing, as its type (specified above), jalaurida, de Nic., is congeneric with europa, Fab., the type of Lethe, Hb.

AMATHUSIIDAE.

Ategana, Stichel, 1906, Gen. Ins., 36 : 10. TYPE = Pupilio phidippus, Linn., 1763. The name Ategana, Stich., was proposed for a subgenus of Amathwia, Fab.,

and the author placed in i t phidippus, Linn., the type of Amathusia, Fab. The type of Ategalza, Stich., is, therefore, phidippus, Linn., in accordance with Article 9 of the International Code. Ategana, Stich., is, therefore, a synonym of Amathusia, Fnb.

Syntegana, Stichel, 1906, Gen. Ins., 36 : 12. TYPE = Amathusia virgata, Butl., 1870. The name Sptegana, Stich., was proposed as a subgenus of Amathusia,

Fab., and the author put in it virgata, Butl., and one other species. The above selection of virgata, Butl., as the type makes Sylztegana. Stich., a synonym of Pseudamathusia, Honr., of which virgata, Butl., is also the type.

STYLOPS-VOL. IV. PART 1. (JAN. 1935.) B

2 Mr. F. Hemming’s Notes

NY MPHALID AE . Solenites, Mabille, 1887, in Grandidier, Hist. phys. nat. polit. Madagascar, 18

Lep. 1 : 82. TYPE = Acraea igati, Boisd., 1833. The name Solenites, Mab., is thus a synonym of Acraea, Fab., as well as a

homonym of Solenites, Gesner, 1758 (Tract. Petref. : 39).

Phanopeltis, Mabille, 1887, ibid., Lep. 1 : 84. TYPE = Acraea ranacalona, Boisd., 1833. The name Phanopeltis, Mab., is thus a synonym of Acraeu, Fab., the types

of the two genera, ranacalona, Boisd., and horta, Linn., being congeneric.

Aphanopeltis, Mabille, 1887, ibid., Lep. 1 : 85. TYPE = Papilio horta, Linn., 1764. The name Aphanopeltis, Mab., thus falls as a synonym of Acraea, Fab., of

which also horta, Linn., is the type.

Xykophcges, Martin, 1903, Deuts. ent. Z., Iris, 16 : 81. TYPE = Papilio thyonneus, Cram., 1779. Martin proposed this name as a subgenus of Cyrestis, Boisd., and placed in it

Ihyonneus, Cram., the type of Cyrestis, Boisd. The type of Sykophages, Martin, is, therefore, thymneus, Cram., in accordance with the provisions of the Inter- national Code. Sykophcges, Martin, is, thus, a synonym of Cyrestis, Boisd.

RIODINIDAE (= ERYCINIDAE). Hyporion, Rober, 1903, Ent. Ztg., Stettin, 64 : 357.

TYPE = Emesis princeps, Oberthiir, 1886. Though valid nomenclatorially, the name Hypcrion, Rober, is not required,

as its type (selected above), princeps, Oberthiir, is congeneric with tamerlana, Staudinger, the type of Polycaena, Staudinger.

Talites (Boisduval MS.), Capronnier, 1874, Ann. SOC. ent. Belg., 17 : 20. TYPE = Papilio meris, Stoll, 1781. The above selection of meris, Stoll, as the type makes Talites, Capronnier, a

synonym of Lasaiu, Bates, [1868], of which also meris, Stoll, is the type.

PAPILIONIDAE. Panosmia, Wood-Mason & de NicBville, 1886, J. asiat. SOC. Beng., Pt. 2, 55

(4) : 374. TYPE = Papilio dasarada, Moore, 1857. As damrada, Moore, and polydorus, Linn. (the type of Polydorus, Swainson,

1833) are congeneric, the above fixation of dasarada, Moore, as the type of Panosmia, Wood-Mason & de NicBville, makes that name a synonym of Polydorus, Swainson.

(b) Notes on two unnecessary generic names. SATYRIDAF.

Neominois, Scudder, 1875, Bull. Buffalo SOC. nat. Sci., 2 : 241. The genus Neominois, Scudd., was erected by Scudder for Satyrus ridingsii,

Edw., 1865 (which Scudder specified as its type), a t a time when the relationship

on Genera of Rhopalocera. 3

of the allied palaearctic species was very imperfectly understood. There are, however, no characters by which ridingsii, Edw., can be separated generically from Papilio autonoe, Esper, which was fixed as the type of Eurnenis, Hiibner, [1818], (Verz. bekannt. Schmett. (4) : 58) by Grote in 1873 (Canad. Ent., 5 : 62). The name Neominois, Scudd., must, therefore, be sunk as a synonym of Eumenis, Hb.

Cercponis, Scudder, 1875, Bull. Buffalo SOC. nat. Sci., 2 : 241. The genus Cercyonis, Scudd., was erected for Papilio alope, Fab., 1793,

which Scudder specified as its type. That species cannot, however, be separated generically from Papilio dryas, Scopoli, 1763, the type of Mincis, IIiibner, [1818], (Verz. bekannt. Schmett. (4) : 57). The name Cercyonis, Scudder, must, therefore, be sunk as a synonym of Minois, Hubner.

(c) Three new generic names. LYCAENIDAE.

Arletta, gen. n.

* Generic characters.--I select as the generic characters of Arletta, Hemming, the characters given by Toxopeus for Moorea, Toxopeus, 1927 (Tijdschr. Ent., 70 : 255).

TYPE = Arletta vardhuna (Moore, 1874) ( = PolSommatus eardhana, Moore, 1874).

Chapman (1909, Proc. 2001. SOC. Lond., 1909 : 424) doubtfully associated vaidhana, Moore, with binghami, Chapman, which is the type of Notarthiinus, Chapman (1908, Proc. zool. SOC. Lond., 1908 : 677). Toxopeus (1927) pointed out that this association was not possible and proposed the name Moorea, Toxopeus, for rardhana, Moore. That name is, however, invalid, as i t is a homonym of Moorea, Jones & Kirby, 1869 (Ann. Mag. nat. Hist., (4) 3 : 225). The name Arletta, Hemming, is, therefore, here proposed as a substitute for Moorea, Tox.

Pamela, gen. n.

Generic characters.--I select as the generic characters of Pamela, Hemming, the characters given by de Nic@ville for Listeria, de Nic., 1894 (J. asiat. SOC. Beng., Pt. 2, 63 (1) : 35).

TYPE = Pamela dudgeonii (de Nic., 1894) ( = Listeria dudgeonii, de Nic., 1894).

The name Pamela, Hemming, is proposed since Listeria, de Nic., is invalid, being a homonym of Listeria, Robineau-Desvoidy, 1863 (Hist. net. Dipt. Paris, 2 : 600).

HESPERIIDAE.

Yvretta, gen. n. Generic characters.-I select as the generic characters of Yvretta, Hemming,

the characters given by Lindsey, Bell, and Williams, 1931 (J. Sci. Lab. Denison Univ., 26 : 78) for Chaerephon, Godman & Salvin, 1900 (Biol. cent.-Amer. Lep. Rhop., 2 : 462, 474).

TYPE = Ycretta citrus (Mab., 1889) (= Papphila citrus, Mab., 1889). The name Yvretfa, Hemming, is proposed, as Chaerephon, Godman & Salvin,

is invalid, being a homonym of Chaerephon, Dobson, 1878 (Cat. Chiropt. B.M. : 431).
