Key words: Cordulegastridae; Anisoptera; Odonata; East Palaearctic; China; Fraser; Klots. A translation of the Chinese description of a female of Neallogaster annandalei (Fraser, 1923), by Zhou (1988) is given and compared with the original description of Anotogaster annandalei. It is concluded that this species should be included in the genus Cordulegaster. A translation of the original Chinese descriptions of Cordulegaster jinensis Zhu & Han, 1992, and Neallogaster choui Yang & Li, 1994, is presented. It is suggested that the two species are conspecific. Material of "Cordulegaster luniferous var. annandalei Klots, 1947" from Yunnan is identified as Neal- logaster latifrons S£lys, 1878 (?), by which the presence of Neallogaster in China is confirmed. Introduction Recently, several papers on Chinese Cordulegastridae have been published, in which new species are described. Zhou (1988) described Anotogaster sakaii from Zhejiang and reported upon a female of Neallogaster annandalei (Fraser, 1923). Zhu & Han (1992) described Cordule- gaster jinensis from Shanxi, and Yang & Li (1994) described Neallogaster choui from Shaanxi. As these papers are predominantly in Chinese with only a short English summary, these have been translated with the financial support of the Uyttenboogaart-Eliasen Stichting, Amster- dam. These texts, with the exclusion of those on Anotogaster Selys, 1854, are reproduced here. The descriptions are compared with those of other East Palaearctic taxa. Specimens in the AMNH reported upon by Klots (1947) as "Cordulegaster luniferous var. annandalei" turned out to be Neallogaster Cowley, 1934, probably Neallogaster latifrons Selys, 1878. The remaining two known specimens of N. annandalei have not been examined, since they are not accessible for study. O n the basis of the descriptions, however, it is concluded that they do not belong to the genus Neallogaster, but to the Cordulegaster luniferus species-group. Material of "Cordulegaster luniferous var. annandalei Klots, 1947" from Yunnan is identified as Neallogaster latifrons S£lys, 1878 (?), by which the presence of Neallogaster in China is confirmed.

I n t r o d u c t i o n

Recently, several papers o n Chinese Cordulegastr idae have been p u b l i s h e d , i n w h i c h n e w species are descr ibed. Z h o u (1988) described Anotogaster sakaii f r o m Zhe j iang a n d reported u p o n a female of Neallogaster annandalei (Fraser, 1923). Z h u & H a n (1992) described Cordulegaster jinensis f r o m Shanxi , a n d Y a n g & L i (1994) described Neallogaster choui f r o m Shaanxi . A s these papers are p r e d o m i n a n t l y i n Chinese w i t h o n l y a short E n g l i s h summary , these have been translated w i t h the f inancial support of the Uyttenboogaart-El iasen Stichting, A m s t e r d a m . These texts, w i t h the exclus ion of those o n Anotogaster Selys, 1854, are reproduced here. The descr ipt ions are compared w i t h those of other East Palaearctic taxa. Specimens i n the A M N H reported u p o n b y K l o t s (1947) as "Cordulegaster luniferous var. annandalei" turned out to be Neallogaster C o w l e y , 1934, probably Neallogaster latifrons Selys, 1878. The r e m a i n i n g t w o k n o w n specimens of N. annandalei have not been examined, since they are not accessible for study. O n the basis of the descriptions, however , i t is c o n c l u d e d that they d o not b e l o n g to the genus Neallogaster, b u t to the Cordulegaster luniferus species-group.

Cordulegaster annandalei (Fraser, 1923) c o m b . nov.

Anotogaster annandalei Fraser, 1923:451, fig. 1-la; Needham, 1930:103. Allogaster annandalei; Fraser, 1929:83, fig. 6A, pi. xii, fig. 13. Neallogaster annandalei; Zhou, 1988: 72; Yang & Li, 1994:460. Not: Cordulegaster luniferous var. annandalei; Klots, 1947:4-6, figs 25-29.

T h i s taxon is o n l y k n o w n f r o m the holotype spec imen a n d a single female descr ibed b y Z h o u (1988). M a t e r i a l reported u p o n b y K l o t s (1947) as "Cordulegaster luniferous var. annandalei" turned out to be Neallogaster latifrons Selys, 1878 (?) (see u n d e r that species). The holotype f r o m "West of P u n g t z u l a " , collected d u r i n g the Percy S laden Trust E x p e d i t i o n to Y u n n a n u n d e r the leadership of J .W. G r e g o r y (1922), w a s o r i g i n a l l y preserved i n the I n d i a n M u s e u m (Fraser, 1929: 83). K i m m i n s (1966: 223) l is ted i t as not present i n the B M ( N H ) , a n d stated that "the entomologica l collections [of the I n d i a n M u s e u m ] were subsequently transferred to Z o o l o g i c a l Surv e y of India , but e n q u i r y revealed that most of these types c o u l d not be traced, poss ib ly lost b y f l o o d damage d u r i n g w a r t i m e storage." A s the material w a s o r i g i n a l l y preserved " i n a r a w native spir i t" , not containing "any great percentage of a lcohol " (Fraser, 1923: 447), it is " i n a poor a n d macerated condi t ion" (Fraser, 1929: 83), a n d one must fear that it is indeed lost. This holds for the type material of Anotogaster gre-goryi Fraser, 1923, as w e l l . Fraser's f igures, however , are general ly considered accurate enough. Unfortunate ly , Z h o u d i d not f igure his specimen, a n d as I have not been able to examine it (attempts to l o a n it have been i n v a i n u n t i l n o w ) , o n l y a translat ion of the descr ipt ion b y Z h o u is reproduced here.

A c o m p a r i s o n w i t h the or ig ina l descr ipt ion reveals var ious discrepancies: 1) Fraser's descr ipt ion of the l a b i u m indicates that the y e l l o w part is not d i v i d e d into t w o separate mark ings (probably a matter of sexual d i m o r p h i s m ) ; 2) the postc lypeus has a pale b r o w n centre i n the type (a matter of descr ipt ion, or d u e to the macerated c o n d i t i o n of the type); 3) there is n o indica t ion of any y e l l o w o n the dorsa l part of the frons i n the type; 4) the type has the occipital triangle "raised, y e l l o w " , i n the female it is d a r k b r o w n ; 5) Fraser does not m e n t i o n any y e l l o w o n the anterior lobe of the prothorax; 6) the type has the antehumeral stripe "curved i n w a r d s to near ly meet its f e l l o w b e l o w the ante-alar s inus" (Fraser, 1929: 83; see also N e e d h a m , 1930: 103) (obvious ly erroneous, i t is n o r m a l l y shaped i n the or ig ina l descr ipt ion a n d f igure (Fraser, 1923: 452, f ig . 1); 7) w i n g s entirely hyal ine (possibly a matter of age (van Pelt , 1994: 88), a n d sexual d i m o r p h i s m (van Pelt, 1994: 89); 8) the pterost igma is dark b r o w n , i n the female it is y e l l o w ; 9) the type has a b d o m i n a l segment 1 entirely black (possibly a matter of sexual d i m o r p h i s m ) ; 10) Z h o u does not m e n t i o n a second spot b e l o w the subdorsa l one o n segment 2; 11) the type has t iny baso-lateral spots o n segments 7-8; 12) Fraser (1929: plate x i i , f ig . 13) f igures apical lunules o n segment 7 (but not ment ioned i n the text, the f igure is o b v i o u s l y erroneous for i n the o r i g i n a l descr ipt ion i t is noted that these spots are absent); 13) the spot o n segment 8 is reni -f o r m i n the type; 14) Z h o u describes the spot o n segment 10 as "basal", w h i l e the type has a large o v a l obl ique subdorsal spot (possibly a matter of sexual d i m o r p h i s m ? ) ; 15) the type is smaller : length a b d o m e n 55 m m , length h i n d w i n g 44 m m [erroneousl y indica ted as 51 m m b y N e e d h a m , 1930:103] (a difference i n size of 6 m m between sexes is c o m m o n i n Cordulegastr idae) .

R e m a r k s . — I a m not sure whether this spec imen is real ly conspecific w i t h the holotype . Some of the discrepancies can be attributed to sexual d i m o r p h i s m , to the macerated c o n d i t i o n of the type, or to errors i n the descr ipt ion. But especial ly the co lorat ion of the frons, the occipital triangle, the pterost igma, a n d the m a r k i n g s o n a b d o m i n a l segments 2 a n d 8 might indicate specific distinctness rather than intraspe-cif ic variabi l i ty .

I n b o t h descriptions Fraser (1923: 451; 1929: 83) figures the anal appendages. The p o s i t i o n of the posterior teeth is quite remarkable, apparent ly more poster ior ly as i n any other cordulegastr id . The characters of N. annandalei g i v e n b y Y a n g & L i (1994: 460) are based o n the descriptions of Fraser a n d Z h o u . H o w e v e r , Y a n g & L i noted that the spots o n a b d o m i n a l segments 7-10 are connected dorsal ly, w h i c h is o b v i o u s l y erroneous for this feature cannot be taken f r o m either of the descriptions.

D i s t r i b u t i o n . — I have not been able to f i n d any reference to the type locality, " P u n g t z u l a " (or " P u n g T z u - L a " ) . It is ment ioned o n l y once i n Fraser (1923). Since a l l other dragonfl ies f r o m the Percy S laden E x p e d i t i o n came f r o m W Y u n n a n , it is assumed that the type local i ty is situated somewhere i n that region. D a l i (= Ta- l i : 25°42'N, 100°11'E) is s i tuated at the S border of the E r H a i lake, some 250 k m W of K u n m i n g , West Y u n n a n .

D i s c u s s i o n . — These specimens differ f r o m 'true' Neallogaster (see u n d e r that

genus) w i t h regards to the shape of the frons. Fraser (1929: 83) mentions the "great height" of the frons, but o n l y after the 'discovery' of the anal triangle i n the h i n d w i n g . In the or ig ina l descr ipt ion Fraser does neither note nor f igure any difference between A. annandalei a n d A. gregoryi i n this respect. A l s o Z h o u , w h i l e descr ib ing his spec imen together w i t h a n u m b e r of Anotogaster specimens, does not m e n t i o n any differences between the genera w i t h regards to the shape of the frons. This s imilar i ty , as w e l l as the m a r k i n g s o n l a b r u m a n d postclypeus (yel low instead of concolorous) , the absence of w r i n k l e s o n the frons, a n d the dimensions , are i n accordance w i t h the a s s u m e d characteristics of the C. lunifera species-group. The absence of a n y y e l l o w o n the w i n g s i n the type is not, but this m i g h t be a matter of age. W i t h regards to its d i s t r ibut ion , C. annandalei m i g h t be vicar ious w i t h C. lunifera f r o m Szechwan, w h i c h w o u l d be consistent w i t h the idea of essentially v icar ious species w i t h i n a species-g r o u p . Therefore this taxon is i n c l u d e d here i n the genus Cordulegaster.

R e m a r k s . — A t h i r d spec imen of this series has not been examined , w h i c h w a s also reported u p o n b y K l o t s , w h o s e figures of this material are excellent. The specimens agree w e l l w i t h the descr ipt ion of Neallogaster latifrons i n A s a h i n a (1982: 158), but differ i n : 1) anal tr iangle w i t h 4 cells; 2) metepis ternum w i t h y e l l o w m a r k i n g s ; 3) m a r k i n g s o n the a b d o m e n general ly larger. These specimens are not descr ibed, b u t it is assumed here that this material is conspecif ic w i t h the present mater ia l . A c c o r d i n g to A s a h i n a (1982: 162), N. latifrons is k n o w n f r o m I n d i a ( S i k k i m a n d Dar jeel ing district) a n d N e p a l (East a n d Central) . If the present mater ia l is i n d e e d conspecific w i t h N. latifrons, the k n o w n range of this species is extended w i t h some 900 k m s i n a n eastward direct ion. The presence of Neallogaster i n C h i n a is i n any case c o n f i r m e d , but the genus appears to be restricted to habitats at higher alt i tudes i n the H i m a l a y a s .
