Member Spotlight: Martin Atrops1. Place of Birth: Ventura California2. Where was most of your childhood spent? My childhood was spent in Oxnard California, where my father was the pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church for 26 years.3. What is a favorite memory from childhood?I am the oldest of 9 children and every August my family went camping by a lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.4. What did you expect to be when you grew up? What did you become?I expected to be a Lutheran pastor, and I was a Lutheran pastor for 4 years before I returned to graduate school and earned a doctorate in psychology.5. What brings you satisfaction?I most enjoy time with my wife, daughters and their families.6. What dream is yet a “Must Do”?I hope to have a family sailing celebration in the Caribbean.7. What is a favorite book & why (excluding the Bible)? While I enjoy reading historical biographies, my favorite books are Paul Tillich’s Systematic Theology, Volumes I, II, & III. Tillich accurately integrates theology, psychology, and philosophy.8. What non-Biblical figure (real or fictional) has been a model for your life & how?Lee Edward Travis, the former dean of the graduate school I attended, was not rigidly dogmatic and critical. I found more “Grace” being lived out in him, a psychologist, than in a large number of theologians, seminary professors and pastors that I had known.9. What do you want folks to know about you?I am interested in publishing an original understanding of the causes of human conflict and what might be done about it.10. How long have you been a member of Joy Lutheran Church ?I have been attending Joy Lutheran since Reformation Sunday, 2001.11. What activity do you most enjoy at JLC?I very much enjoyed the 4X4 Groups. 12. What is your best kept secret?I climbed to the top Half Dome in Yosemite Valley and I came away from the experience with a fear of heights!

3

Q: Will there be food at the Silent auction?A: Yes! Wonderful breakfast burritos

Blue Candle SundayThe Healing and Wholeness Committee will be lighting a blue candle on the Altar every 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. The candle is to let everyone know that during communion there will be laying on of hands and anointing with oil.

For these Blue Candle Sundays, there will be two healing ministers participating. Once a month Pastor Martin will be one of these healing ministers and will be joined by Pastor Marcia Wakeland, Jennifer Bagley and our Parish Nurse, Margie Hall. In the coming months we hope to train more healing ministers.

So keep your eye out for the Blue Candle on the Altar.

Prayer Ministry TeamPrayer is a powerful tool that God wants us to use always!Currently we have about 16 members who are committed to this vital ministry and pray on a regular basis.

If you would like to join this powerful team, please call Carol Munk at 694-9561 or email her at [email protected]. Each week Carol will email an updated prayer list to the team. During the week, Prayer Ministers will also receive additions and updates, so that those who need our prayers receive them as soon as possible.

If you need to request prayer, simply fill out a Prayer Request card (on the table just outside the door to the Sanctuary) and hand it to Pastor Martin, the Lay Assistant, or Carol on Sunday. Of course, at anytime during the week you may call Joy and speak to Carl or Pastor Martin, or call Carol.

October Prayer PartnerSitka Lutheran Church is Joy’s Prayer

Partner for the month of October.

In 1839-40, a Lutheran Church was founded in Sitka. Finns, Swedes, Baltic Germans, Latvians, Ingrians and others who were working for the Russian-America Company (RAC) were members of the Lutheran Church of New Archangel. This is the oldest Protestant congregation in Alaska, over 100 year before statehood.

When the future state of Alaska was transfered from Russia to the United States, the Russian government deeded the property of the Lutheran Church of New Archangel to the congregation and they no longer sent pastors to them. In 1888 the city of Sitka tore down their building due to its vandalized condition, but the Lutheran spirit was strong. Until the early 1930’s, Lutherans in Sitka met in homes and schools. They held meetings, Sunday School and Confirmation and everything a church does, but without a building.

In 1935 the congregation was re-established and a new building went up in 1942. 24 years later a fire that destroyed buildings in the downtown Sitka area also destroyed the relatively new church building. Almost two years later a third building was built to house the church, and is the current facility being used today.

Of all the Lutheran Churches in the State of Alaska, Sitka Lutheran has one of the most storied histories. From being the first, to being destroyed 2 times (almost 3 times from a fire in 1993), but yet they survive and continue to serve their communities and other communities in South East.

Please pray for Pastor Sandra Rudd and our brothers and sisters at Sitka Lutheran Church as they not only continues its ministry of worship, service, witness, learning, and support, but also to a wide variety of community agencies they support.

Covenant Playersdrama is what we do On Sunday, October 16th, we will once again welcome the Covenant Players at our worship. Covenant Players, a Christian Drama ministry since 1963, does a wonderful job bringing the message of the Gospel through short, powerful dramatic sketches and skits. If you seen them before, you know how entertaining and inspiring they are.

This would be a great Sunday to invite a friend to church!

5

Q: What is the best part about the Silent Auction?A: Getting our congregation together for a fun-filled event!

You Know You are a Lutheran If.....by

Janet Letnes MartinSuzann (Johnson) Nelson

(Thank you Joe Alutius for your donation & smiles)You Know You are a Lutheran If...

“You wonder why Martin Luther, as long as he had taken the time to write 95 theses, didn't round it off to an even 100?”

“You know that Luther's Rose belongs on a lapel, not in a vase.”“You know better than to question the pastor or synod hotshots openly even though

Martin Luther sure would have if he were still alive.”

Look at the Evidenceby

Richard & Tina Kleiss(not in the library as yet)Reviewed by Carol Munk

This book is designed to reinforce our individual faith and to facilitate sharing the reasons for this faith. Was there a world wide flood or not?Do random changes add useful information to an organism? Can chemicals come alive?Does the fossil record show the transformation from one live form to another life form? The answers to these questions require scientific investigation and do not require religious discussion. The authors write about the evidence taken from the Bible, Biology,Prophecy, Botany, Chemistry, Anatomy, Fossil records, Astronomy, Common sense, History, Geology, Genetics,Physics, etc.    This book is a day to day devotional, but I'm reading as a would a story as it is a page turner, for me.    An example: “It is astounding that over a billion fossils have been found, yet there is no undisputed transitional form between very different types of animals or even animal features (such as a reptile'[s scale turning into a bird's feather).”Resource: Letting God Create Your Day, Vol. 3, p. 213“All flesh is not the same flesh; but there one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, another of birds” 1 Corinthians 15: 39 (K J V)

ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans July 2012The time is running out on deciding if you or your teen is interested in attending the 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering. This is be occurring July 18-22nd In New Orleans and this only happens every three years. Last time, which was also in New Orleans, there were approximately 36,000 Lutheran Youth. There are still plenty of service projects still needed to be done in this area due to Hurricane Katrina. Last time, the people of New Orleans were very appreciative of the work done by the ELCA youth because they actually got some useful work done, didn’t “just come for a photo shoot”. There will be tail-gating parties, community life gatherings, service work, service / discipleship labs around the city of New Orleans, peacemaking exercises, mass gathering at the superdome, practice justice exercises and closing worship. There are only limited numbers of spots per region (not true—although there are only 39,000 spots open nationwide). The Knik Cluster, which includes people from Wasilla, Palmer, Eagle River, and Bethel will be registering together. The youth director of Good Shepherd, Ian McConnell, came to talk to us and eat pizza with us. He is a really interesting, inspiring guy and shared how doing service projects with his youth group growing up was pivotal to his spiritual development. Youth entering 9th grade to just graduated from high school are welcome to sign up. Sign up is on October 9th, and registration information is due to Pastor Martin by October 3rd (no later!), and it usually fills up very quickly, so now is the time to decide whether you want to sign up. I participate on an on-line site where people pose questions to me about faith, especially the Lutheran faith. Recently, a questioner asked me, “The Catholic Church reportedly is inviting Protestants to return.  Please provide your opinion regarding a few primary reasons to remain Protestant.”

In honor of the Reformation month, I share my answer (with the name changed):

Bill:Thank you for your question. Why would someone choose to stay within the Protestant fold of Christianity? Obviously, there are many, personal reasons one might choose on either side. I will share my reasons.

First, I appreciate our emphasis of God's unmerited grace that is given to us as a gift in Jesus Christ. Protestants, and here I especially mean, Lutheran Protestants, are not the only ones who teach this, but we Lutherans choose to make this our major emphasis. Grace, God's gift of acceptance, love and forgiveness, is something I can never earn, no matter how pious or religious I become. It comes to me in the person and the work of Jesus Christ and his life, death and resurrection on my behalf, and on behalf of all sinners. By making this our first priority, we ground our theology and practice in God's actions, not ours. We make the center of all we do Jesus' work, and not my attainment of God's. This is most certainly true and certainly the chief of all reasons I remain Protestant.

Second, I appreciate that fact that God comes to me as an individual, while at the same time God comes to us through the church community. I love that my prayers are directly heard by God, that my confessions are heard and favorably responded to by God, without needing to go through a church mediator. At the same time, I also appreciate that I can also hear that forgiveness through the witness and proclamation of the pastor and other Christians. Sometimes, it is very helpful to physically hear from another baptized Christian, "In the name of Jesus, your sins are forgiven."

I also appreciate that my baptism is both God's promise to me, ("You are my child, I am your God) and my introduction the Christian community. It is the only credential I need to be a full member of God's family, since it is based on God's Word and not mine. Baptism is the original equalizer, making all our vacations (from the Latin. "to call") equally important and holy. My call as a pastor is no more holy or important than my wife's call as a teacher, or my father's as a welder, or my mother's as a homemaker. We are all called to vocations as baptized children of God. We are all bearers of God's promise and presence in what we do. We are all "little Christs" to one another and to and for the world in which we live. There is no hierarchy in God's family. No one is more holy. No one is more loved than another.

I appreciate that while we honor tradition and reason, we hold in a primary place God's Word revealed to us through Jesus Christ and expressed in the written words of the Bible. Martin Luther once said, "All we need to know about God is found with Jesus on the cross." That focus on Christ crucified for us is important. Our human traditions are important, since they contain the wisdom of the community over many years, but they can never supersede the revealed grace we have in Jesus Christ. Humans and institutions will fail us; Jesus will not.

Finally, I revel in the freedom God has given me in Jesus Christ. I am freed from the guilt and shame of not measuring up to God's demands. The Law of God assures me that I can never measure up; the Gospel/Good News of God proclaims to me that the One who could and did

Christmas Christmas Christmas Christmas Christmas Christmas Christmas

(Jesus) took care of this demand. The sins of the past are gone. All my failures and ungodliness: forgiven. Each day, I am reminded that God's grace and love surrounds me and empowers me. I will most likely fail to measure up to perfection today, but I am still a Child of God. Each day, I am called to live out that marvelous freedom because God already loves me. I live out my vocation/ occupation, and my roles as father, husband, child etc. as a freed-in-Christ Child of God. Liberated from the weight of any guilt or shame, I can strive to be a faithful steward of God's gifts and God's Creation, to be gracious and forgiving to those around me, and be a witness to the power of a heart set free in love.

Bill, I hope that this is helpful. I would never denigrate our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers, or what they believe. Obviously, Jesus lives and works with them as well and they honor God through their lives and worship. I can only answer why I am glad to be a Lutheran Protestant, and why I am excited to remain in that camp. I pray for your own journey in faith. May God lead you to where God wants you to be.

First Fruits SundaysRemember to bring your canned food for the Red Wagon the first Sunday of the month. This is a very important time for the Food Pantry. With summer getting close, there will be a need for more food to cover what some

kids would normally get at school. Thank You to the Soellers family for their help collecting

food and delivering it to the Food Pantry
