Principal’s Message Dear Parents/Caregivers, Parent interviews Interviews for Parents with children in Years 1 to 6 will take place from 25 – 28 March. This year we are placing our booking for interviews online. Simply go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and follow these simple instructions. Firstly enter the school event code DXKRT . Next complete your details (you do not have to enter your email address), then choose the teacher and convenient time. Finally click Finish and if you entered your email address the time will be emailed immediately. You may have to check your junk mail box if you don’t see it straight away. On-line appointments will close on Thursday 21 March. Please note that Miss Widman, 1/2W, will hold her interviews on Thursday, April 4. Bus travel Bus transport is available for children. All infants (K-2) children are eligible for a subsidised bus pass as are the primary (Years 3-6) children who meet zone criteria for subsidised transport. Children must behave in an orderly manner when travelling on the bus. Parents are asked to ensure their children are responsible bus users. More information can be obtained from Forest Coach Lines – 9450 2277. If the bus is late, or if you have some concerns about your child, then the first point of contact is Forest Coach Lines and then the school. The bus route for the school can be found at http://www.forestcoachlines.com.au/html/school/frame.html Year 6 EOI for High School 2014 Just a quick reminder to Year 6 parents that the EOIs for a high school in 2014 need to be completed and returned to school by this Wednesday. Science starters Did humans live with dinosaurs? Does the moon disappear in the day? Kids love to know the answers to life's mysteries but there are a few facts they often get wrong in the name of science. Find out more: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/other-subjects-and-projects/science/10-scientific-facts-your-child-needs-to-know Boom Gate To assist Before School Care and Band parents we have organised for the Boom Gate to be up from 6:45 – 7:30 am. THESE ARE THE ONLY TIMES PARENTS ARE ALLOWED TO DRIVE INTO THE SCHOOL TO DROP OFF CHILDREN. We have had a number of parents tailgating teachers down the drive or waiting at the top of the drive until a parent leaving activates the gate outside of these hours. This is not permitted. We also ask that you follow the signage and only park in the designated parking bays. You are the role model for your children. Please model RESPONSIBLE behaviour. PBEL This week we are looking at how RESPECT, ACHIEVEMENT and RESPONSIBILITY relate to the school playground. To show Respect, children should share equipment and friends and be kind and consider others. Being Responsible, children place rubbish in the correct coloured bins, wear a hat at all times, play safely and fairly, use all equipment appropriately, look after their belongings and listen to and follow instructions. To demonstrate Achievement students must be a good winner and loser, encourage others, participate to the best of their ability and participate in games successfully. Facts about tutors Private tutoring to give kids a helping hand in their schooling is a growing business. However, it's also an area where parents can be vulnerable to bogus offers and misleading advertising. Find out more: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/homework-tips/facts-about-tutors School Accounts and P&C contributions I would like to thank everyone who has paid the school accounts and P&C contributions. If you need another form these are available on the school website in the Notes and P&C section or from the front office.

School Photographs With so much happening it is easy to overlook notes that go out. This is just a gentle reminder that school photograph orders are due. Scripture Due to unforeseen circumstances, Bahai’ scripture is no longer unavailable. Could the parents of the Bahai’ Scripture students please indicate to us, in writing, whether you wish your child to attend scripture of another denomination or non-scripture. Apology Our sincere apologies to Kurt W, 6C, whom we accidentally left off the Pittwater Zone Swimming Carnival results last week. Kurt was part of the Senior 4x50m Freestyle Relay Team which came 2nd. Well done Kurt. Until next time, Bill Gillespie, Principal

ANZAC DAY CEREMONY Our school will be holding an Anzac Day ceremony on Friday April 5th at 11.15am. This year, Anzac Day, the 25th April, falls when we are on holidays so we have chosen April 5th to commemorate this national day. The ceremony will be conducted by the school prefects, and will include laying flowers around the flagpole to remember the Australian soldiers who lost their lives in war. Students in Years 3-6 will attend the ceremony, and are asked to bring in a few flowers to make a class bouquet. Any student who belongs to the Guiding or Scouting movement may wear their uniform to the ceremony. Ms.Sherwood and Mr Rosconi

The Bronze Awards are given out at the K-2 & 3-6 Lines. The Silver Awards will be given to the students

at the K-2 & 3-6 Assemblies. The Gold & Diamond Awards will be given out at the K-6 Assembly. (Parents, if you are sending the 20 mini merits from home, could you please make sure that the mini merit

on top has your child’s full name & class on it. Thank you.)

On Thursday, April 11th 2013, our school cross country carnival will be taking place in the school grounds between 9am and 1pm. It is always a great day and it would be wonderful if you are able to come along and support your child in their efforts. We are looking for parents to act as course marshals on the day between the hours of 9am – 11am and between 11.15am and 1.00pm. These times are approximate. Marshals are necessary to ensure safety of all our students while running the course. In past years we have been short of helpers during the 11.15am – 1pm session. Please complete the slip below if you can assist.

All times are approximate due to increased class numbers – please be patient!

PLEASE RETURN TO MRS DANIEL (2D)

School Banking – A platform to help you teach your child about saving!

Elanora Heights Public School will be taking part in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program. It's a great way to give your child a financial head start by helping them to learn about good money management and the importance of saving. It’s time kids learnt that Mum and Dad are not the bank! Does your child always want? Do they understand how much things cost? Do they think there is an endless supply of cash from the machine in the wall? The School Banking program offers you a platform to start teaching your child the value of money and the benefits of saving. Our Saving Tips to discuss with your child:

1. Discuss what saving into the bank means. A bank account is somewhere safe to keep your money, the money remains yours and the more money you put in the more money you have.

2. How do you earn money? A great way to start your child’s venture into earning money is doing chores around the house to earn pocket money. Set expectations and what they have the potential to earn.

3. Set a goal, work out together something your child would really like to save for, starting out with smaller and achievable items works best. Discuss how much money they will need to save to reach this goal.

4. Once your child has reached the goal, research through catalogues or online as to where they will get the best value for their money.

5. Watch your child’s sense of pride as you take them to purchase the item that they have worked and saved for!

We realise that many parents already have an account for their child and are actively saving for their child’s future. Most of the time this is done through electronic banking and your child doesn’t get to see and handle the benefit first hand. This program is once again about your child learning the process of saving and handling the cash themselves. Participating in School Banking gives your child the opportunity to do this on a weekly basis. Earning fun rewards Every time your child makes a deposit through the School Banking program, regardless of how much, they receive a cool Dollarmites token. Once they have saved enough tokens, they can swap them for fun Dollarmites gifts, like handballs, calculators and money boxes. What you need to know School Banking Day will be WEDNESDAY, commencing Wednesday 3rd April, 2013. Your child will need a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. There are several options on how to open an account. A representative from the Commonwealth Bank will be at the school at the following times to assist parents with opening accounts: Monday 25th March 2013 – 2.20pm to 3.20pm. *Please bring photo identification for yourself. You can also attend any Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child’s birth certificate; if you’re an existing Commonwealth Bank customer you can open an account through your Netbank facility. Existing accounts can be used, just simply bring it in on the first banking day. Banking Day Simply bring in your yellow wallet and deposit book - this will be collected by the teachers in the morning and sent to the office for processing by the School Banking Coordinator. The wallet will then be returned to the class that day.

Your School Banking Coordinator is: Carolyn Chessell - [email protected] Thank you for supporting School Banking at our school!

Do Not Park on the Grass (aka Band Bugle) Band Fees Bouquets first up. Thank you to the vast majority of parents who have paid Band fees. We always cut a bit of slack and at the time of this newsletter meeting the ScWeek deadline 96% of parents have paid or advised of alternative arrangements. For you, nothing is too much. We will happily do double hand stands with pike (degree of difficulty; 8.3). Now the brickbats. Reminders were sent last week for payment of Band fees. Thank you to those who have settled their accounts. For those who still have outstanding fees the following process is in place:

1. A note will go home with your Band student today. 2. Your account or alternative arrangement must be settled by this Friday (22 March). 3. If not settled by Friday or you have not contacted the Treasurers ([email protected]) to

make alternative arrangements, your child is no longer part of the Band program. The Committee is here to do its best for every student in the Band program. It is particularly galling to volunteer time and then be treated with a lack of common courtesy. We spend far too much time chasing the last 4% on administrative matters when we could be doing better things to improve the Band program. Fee receipts will be issued after the last payment is received or arrangement made. Band Camp Band Camp reminders were emailed last week. Please note that the forms do not require printing and all details can be directly entered in the spaces provided. Please ensure that completed or amended forms are emailed as an attachment to the Band Camp Coordinator, Paula Burgess at [email protected] by 19 March (this Tuesday). The Band Committee has a sizeable task ahead to collate information and make documents available to the school and Camp Kedron. Band Camp is compulsory for Senior Band and strongly recommended for Intermediate Band. The Guitar Group will also run a 2 day workshop at Band Camp. Beginners will have a one day Band Camp in Term 2. Car Access to School Grounds Student safety in the vicinity of motor vehicles is a major focus of the P&C and is a focus of the school when vehicles are on school grounds. Presently, Band parents have the luxury of entering school premises prior to 7.30am for rehearsals. This luxury will not continue unless some common sense on the part of some parents prevails. There have been some truly extraordinary events that defy responsible behaviour including reversing the length of the school driveway and other close calls. A few things to remember:

1. Do not tailgate in the morning when the boom gate is closed. Following a teacher or a member of staff in is not acceptable. The gate is closed for a reason.

2. Observe the speed limit. 3. Keep the roundabout outside the Admin block on your right hand side. 4. Park in designated spots or on the concrete areas near the demountables. 5. And, believe it or not, do not park on the grass.

After School Care Senior Band students are still mingling with After School Care students on Thursday afternoons. Please be reminded that parents are responsible for their children after school has finished. Senior Band students may help Frances between 3pm and 4pm on the proviso you have advised Frances (0404 084 028) beforehand of your intent and she consents to take responsibility for your child(ren).
