Genres A form or type of literature
Nonfiction – based on factual information
Biography – a book about a person’s life written by someone else
Autobiography – a book about the person written by them
Fiction – The author can make-up the entire story
Historical fiction – stories based on historical events/places
Realistic fiction- a story about something that could happen; usually involves family situations, peer relationships, and life decisions

C – Climax – point of greatest interest; the turning point in the story
D – Falling action – result of climax; brings story to close
E – Resolution – reveals the final outcome; ties up loose ends

1. Man vs. Man – internal conflict in the character; trying to decide on something or weighing options in a major decision
2. Man vs. Nature – outside forces such as weather and the environment acting against our character (like in Touching Spirit Bear when Cole is stranded on the island or has to survive the elements)
3. Man vs. Society – character or group of characters against a political, judicial, or governmental agency (like in Touching Spirit Bear when Cole had to go before Circle Justice)
4. Man vs. Man – Can be 1 vs. 1 or group vs. group (like in The Outsiders Socs vs. Greasers)
5. Man vs. Supernatural – character against a ghost, spirit, or demon
