John Marin started his career as an architect. Marin met John McNeill Whistler, and got interested in painting. He began painting cityscapes using watercolor. He was one of the first American painters to paint in a modern style. He used bold lines and colors.

While working as an architect, Marin met John McNeill Whistler. Whistler was an artists and got Marin interested in painting
In 1910, he traveled to Europe and studied in Paris, Rome, and London. He met other artists in Europe and started painting more like the painting he saw.
He was one of the first American painters to paint in a modern style. He used bold lines and colors.
He spent a long time painting in New York.
While in New York he painted many cityscapes and also painted many pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge.
He is considered to be one of the best watercolorists of his time.
