Note on Nomenclature

During the symposium the nomenclature for the types of obesity, characterized by different distribution of adipose tissue, was discussed. The undersigned thought that the following nomenclature should be recommended for further use:

I. Abdominal obesity (for central, android, apple, etc.) 11. Gluteo-femoral obesity (for peripheral, gynoid, pear, etc.)

We feel that these would be good generic terms to describe the two types of obesity, even if actual measurements of skinfold thickness, circumferences and girths etc. might be performed in various areas of the body.
