Note from the SBIC President

 SBIC 2012
Dear SBIC Members and All Readers of JBIC,
I am excited to assume the role of President of SBIC! It
is humbling to follow the former SBIC Presidents, from
C. David Garner, the first President of SBIC, to Elizabeth
C. Theil, Alfred X. Trautwein, Harry B. Gray, Fraser
Armstrong, Bob Scott, Trevor Hambley and Jose
J. G. Moura, all of whom have brilliantly led SBIC and
achieved so much for this international society alongside
the SBIC Council in a relatively short period of time.
A special thanks to Jose Moura for his leadership these past
two years and for keeping me in the loop this past year. I
look forward to working with Wonwoo Nam, Secretary of
SBIC, and Graeme Hanson, Treasurer of SBIC, the SBIC
Council, as well as Jose as immediate Past President of
SBIC, and certainly with all of you. Voting on the three
incoming SBIC Council members continues through
August 31st, 2012; we enthusiastically welcome the three
new Council members and reluctantly say goodbye to Julie
Kovacs, Janet R. Morrow and Paola Turano, who have just
finished their terms on the SBIC Council.
Graeme Hanson, our trusted SBIC Treasurer, informs
me that SBIC is financially secure! Thanks to all of you
who renew your SBIC memberships. Welcome to the new
members! Keep recommending SBIC membership to your
colleagues and students. We do need to build the mem-
bership with new members. The Online Membership
Application http://www.sbichem.org/membership.php is
most convenient. A huge benefit of SBIC membership is
our friendly and collaborative global community and the
exceptional international conferences. We certainly expe-
rienced one a year ago at ICBIC-15 in Vancouver.
Between now and ICBIC-16 next summer, two more BIC
conferences will convene, with EUROBIC11, the 11th Euro-
pean Biological Inorganic Chemistry Conference, and AsBIC-
VI, the 6th Asian Biological Inorganic Chemistry Conference.
EUROBIC11 will be held on 12–16 September 2012 in
Granada, Spain. The EUROBIC11 Congress Chairs, Josefa
Marıa Gonzalez-Perez, Antonio Matilla Hernandez, and
Juan Niclos-Gutierrez (all from Universidad de Granada)
have organized a terrific conference. The recipient of the
EUROBIC Medal for Younger Scientists will give the
concluding talk at EUROBIC11. I will be headed to this
conference in a few weeks and I’ll be sure to report back in
an upcoming column.

AsBIC-VI will be held 5–8 November 2012 in Hong
Kong. The Chairs of the AsBIC-VI, Hongzhe Sun (Uni-
versity of Hong Kong) and Wing-Tak Wong (Hong Kong
Polytechnic University) have organized a conference with
sessions focused on metal homeostasis, metal-nucleic acid
and metal-gene regulation, metallomics and metalloprote-
omics, metallodrugs, (metallo)molecular imaging, and
protein engineering and biomimetics.
Finally, planning for next summer is coming up sooner
than you might expect! I look forward to seeing you all at
ICBIC-16, which will be held 14–19 July 2013 in Greno-
ble, France. The six plenary lecturers include Frank Neese
(Mulheim, Germany), Thomas O’Halloran (Evanston, IL,
USA), Markus Ribbe (Irvine, CA, USA), Jean-Michel
Saveant (Paris, France), Kazuyuki Tatsumi (Nagoya,
Japan) and Eva Toth (Orleans, France), along with 2012
SBIC Early Career Award winner Carsten Krebs (Penn
State University, University Park, PA, USA) and the still-
to-be-selected 2013 SBIC Early Career Award winner.
ICBIC-16 is shaping up to be a spectacular meeting!
I welcome your ideas and suggestions on the continuing
development of SBIC.
