RABBINICAL REFLECTIONS
Passover 5777/2017
Dear Friends:
With TENJ’s publication this
year of my own version of the
Passover Haggadah, replete
with original translation and commentary, I have
been giving a great deal of thought to the history
and traditions surrounding the literary and
liturgical focus of the Seder. Over the course of
Jewish history, countless thousands of editions of
the Haggadah have been published or produced
in manuscript. More become available with each
passing year (good news for Haggadah
collectors!).
The word “Haggadah,” together with the
“Magid” section of the Seder, is derived from the
Hebrew verb meaning “to tell.” This reflects the
Torah’s repeated instruction “to tell” our children
of the historic enslavement of our ancestors and
of the Exodus which brought that dark period to
its conclusion. Thus understood, “Haggadah”
means “the telling” or, perhaps, “the retelling” –
arguably the central role of the Seder experience.
The same verb, however, is used by the Torah in
Deuteronomy 26:3 – “You shall appear before
the priest who will be in office at that time, and
say to him: ‘I declare (higad’ti) this day before
God, that I have come to the place which God
promised to our ancestors to give us.” This verse
introduces the liturgical formula Arami Oved Avi,
recited at the presentation of the first fruits at the
Temple, and treated extensively in the Magid
section of the Seder. The Targum Yerushalmi,
an early translation of the Torah into Aramaic,
renders the Hebrew verb “higad’ti” as “odinan
v’shabchinan” – “we give thanks and praise.”
The verse is thus to be understood to state: “I
offer thanks and praise today before God, for I
have come to the place….” This translation and
etymology suggest that the narrative and study
texts of Magid constitute acts of thanksgiving
and praise. “Haggadah” is thus to be understood
not merely as “The Retelling” but as “THE
BOOK OF THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE.”
I am grateful that I have had the privilege of
making my own modest contribution to the
history of Haggadah commentaries. I offer
thanks and praise to God for the freedom we
celebrate on Passover, for the family and friends
with whom we celebrate, and for the opportunity
to devote myself to the study of that tradition of
celebration. As we each take up the Haggadah
and celebrate our Seders this year, may we all
come to recognize and more deeply to appreciate
the many blessings in our lives.
“We give thanks and praise.”

FROM THE PRESIDENT
SISTERHOOD NEWS
Haubenstock Fund Scholarship applications are available in the office.
Children and grandchildren of Temple members who attend
Jewish summer camp are eligible to receive these grants.
As we begin once again to discuss the journey of the Jews from slavery to freedom, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss TENJ’s journey into maintaining an exciting and viable place of worship. We continue to plan many important projects that will encourage membership and beautify our Temple. The Board of Trustees has approved the placement of one of our remaining stained glass windows into the Rabbi’s study. All who enter the Rabbi’s office will be impressed by the beauty and solemnity of the window. We encourage consideration of your participation in providing the funds for this effort. All who participate will be listed in a plaque adjacent to the window. We are also moving forward with plans to reestablish a Hebrew School for grades K-2, with advertisements for membership to be placed in the Jewish Standard. Details for this program will be forthcoming. Rabbi Prouser has edited and produced a beautiful new translation of the Haggadah and TENJ is offering these in time for your seder at a cost of $18.00 each or $16.00 for quantities of 15 or more. Our annual Gala Champagne Brunch is one of TENJ’s major fundraising events and promises to be an afternoon of joy and success. Ellen Lipschitz and her committee are out selling ads to support this effort, honoring our former President, Norman LaPoff and his wife, Marcia, of blessed memory. Please join us in all these efforts to ensure the progress we are making here at TENJ.

“Sisterhood wishing you a Spring fresh with new promises
and a Passover blossoming with joy Happy Passover!"
At the last Annual meeting, the women of Temple Emanuel chose to begin a new chapter, chang-
ing the Sisterhood to an all inclusive group. We will be trying to include more Mitzvah
projects for the entire Temple family. We hope to have another meeting before
Shavuot, so we can either bake or share recipes for the holiday. Details to follow.
We would like to receive input from congregants with their ideas,
as well as a new group title. Feel free to reach out to either of us.

SELLING YOUR CHAMETZ
Since it is prohibited for Jews to own or possess chametz on Passover, any chametz not consumed, burned, or otherwise disposed of prior to Passover must be sold to a non-Jew, who will own it during Pesach. In order to insure compliance with the details of the law, we appoint a rabbi as our agent for the sale so that it may be carried out properly. The sale of chametz takes effect on Monday morning, April 10, 2017 by 9:00 am and is bought back on the evening after Pesach ends on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 after 8:30 pm. A representative of each household should contact Rabbi Prouser to authorize the sale of the chametz in their family’s possession. Please use the form included in this bulletin and return to Rabbi Prouser at the temple office.

Annual Gala Champagne Brunch
Dear Congregants and friends of Temple Emanuel,
We are happy to announce that the annual Temple Emanuel Gala (this year a champagne
brunch) will take place on Sunday, May 28, 2017, 11:00 a.m., at which time we will honor
our longtime members Norman LaPoff and his wife Marcia, of blessed memory.
Also enclosed with this letter is the ad journal form. The Temple Gala and the Ad Journal
are major fundraising efforts for the Temple. In the past, the Ad Journal was successful
due to the hard work and dedication of our entire Temple membership and friends. We
know that each of you will work as hard as possible to make this year’s Journal an out-
standing success. It is an honor for us to have the opportunity to show our appreciation to
someone who has supported our Temple for so many years. Through your support of the
Ad Journal we can obtain the funds necessary to assure the financial health of our Temple
and achieve our goal of continuing to grow our vibrant congregation.
We look forward to seeing all of you at the Temple Brunch.

TEMPLE EMANUEL OF NORTH JERSEY ANNOUNCES THE SIXTY-SECOND OF A SERIES OF PROGRAMS
“SUNDAYS WITH SOKOL” – APRIL 2017 FILM - MIRACLE AT MIDNIGHT
This month, in commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day, we will be seeing the English language, American film "Miracle at Mid-night", staring Mia Farrow and Sam Waterston. This film is a drama, based on the true action of the people of Denmark during the Holocaust, to successfully smuggle almost all Danish Jews at night to the neutral country of Sweden, thus rescuing them from the hands of the Nazis. The program will begin with the film short, "Toyland". This film short was shown at a recent annual San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. It is in German, with English subti-tles. If you want to see this film short, please arrive on time.
This Program will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 23, 2017 (the fourth Sunday in April)
at Temple Emanuel, Franklin Lakes.
Light refreshments, including ice cream and popcorn will be provided. The program is open to the public and there
is no admission or refreshment charge, but attendees will have the opportunity to make small voluntary donations to support these synagogue programs.
