NOT JUST YOUR BASIC GRANNY SQUARE

Materials: This is a stash buster project so a good opportunity to use up all the odd balls. It doesn’t use
up more than 5 balls of DK yarn. I used a 4mm hook.
THE STITCHES WE WORK WITH:
The Double Crochet Stitch or the dc – US Terms:
Yo, insert your hook into the indicated sp or st, and pull through a loop, yo and pull through two loops on your hook – 2 loops remain, yo and pull though 2 loops.
The Single Crochet Stitch or the sc –
Insert hook into the indicated sp or st, pull through a loop, yo and pull through all the loops on the hook.
We always start with half a corner – this allows you to start the new round if you are using the same colour in the same sp that you end in. To do this you simply omit the last ch2 in the corner sp and work a hdc into the beg st. this allows you to then start in the same corner. All credit to Debbie Hemsley from the Neave Collection for this little trick. If you want to start the next round with a new colour then you can simply ch2 and sl st …..not quite making sense? Don’t worry it will, as you work though the rounds.

To get started
With a 4 mm hook make 4ch sl st into the 1st ch to form a ring. Alternatively, you can start with a magic ring/circle. I always prefer a double magic ring, as I feel this is somewhat stronger. Please remember to work away the initial tail very securely. You do not want your work to unravel.
Round 1:
Ch3 (this counts as the 1st st), 2dc into the ring, (ch2, 3dc into the ring) 3 times, ch2, sl st in the beg ch3 OR hdc in the beg ch3.
4 groups of 3dc, 4 ch-2 spaces
Round 2:
Ch3 (to count as the 1st st) OR st-dc in any ch-2 corner sp, 2dc in the same sp (half of 1st corner made),
[(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in the next ch-2 sp] 3times, 3dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch2 and sl st in the beg st OR 1hdc in the beg st.
Corner: 3dc, ch2, 3dc
Round 3:
Ch3 (to count as the 1st st) OR st-dc in any ch-2 corner sp, 2dc in the same sp (half of 1st corner made),

Round 9:
On this round the dc3tog is worked in a single sp – yo, insert hook into the sp and pull up and loop, yo and pull through 2 loop, (yo, insert hook into the sp and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2) twice – you will now have 4 loops on the hook, yo and pull through all 4 loops – still a bit stuck, check out my video…

THE BORDER – Do these rounds only if you want to finish off your blanket. In my videos I have explained the stitch counts and how to grow your blanket, so you can create the size you want and come back to these rounds. This border is very simple and can be adjusted to suit any blanket.
