Interactive Content
…any content that allows the user to actively participate rather than simply reading or watching. It combines highly visual media, educational narrative, and elements that ask a user to perform an action such as answering questions or clicking on buttons

H5P Interactive Video: WhyPedagogical Considerations:
• Educator use of video on the rise• However, HE lagging behind K-12 in terms of students’ active use of
video
• 97% of survey respondents believe that interactive video is going to be important to education (Kaltura, 2018)
• Use strategically to support various approaches / perspectives• enables a shift from didactic to dialectic levels of interactivity (Holden
& Westfall, 2010, p. 32)
H5P Interactive Video: Why
Technological Considerations:
• Student technology use changing (smart phone and tablet replacing PC)
• No need to install software (no IT install requests)
• Free and open to use (scalable, shareable)
• Portable (seamless download / upload process)

Use Cases
Application: Training“One of our favourite discoveries with H5P was the ability to improve upon our existing video content. Screencasts from previous projects could be easily imported from YouTube and turned into interactive content”
(Training Magazine Learning Design Challenge, 2016)
In 2016, the University of Colorado implemented a massive software upgrade project, impacting over 30,000 employees. They needed a solution that was nimble, flexible, just-in-time. H5P allowed the team to build microlearning content quickly.
Application: ElementaryThe Tamarind Tree School located two hours from Mumbai, India, is experimenting with Open Education, using exclusively open source software and hardware for teaching and learning purposes.
The grade 1-8 students access media-rich content on My Big Campus. Educators and content developers have been leaning heavily on H5P content types.
Chawla, 2018
Application: SecondaryThe Norwegian Digital Learning Arena (Norway) is a publicly-funded e-learning site that produces open educational resources for upper-year secondary students. In 2014, the organization teamed up with Joubel (backers of H5P). This is an important partnership, since NDLA publishes all content under a Creative Commons license, their resource bank can be retained, reused, revised, remixed, and redistributed in various contexts.
Application: Post-Secondary
Dr. Mike Altieri of the Hochschule Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences leads a project titled “All in One for All”. This project uses the branching feature in H5P Interactive Video to “integrate different video sequences what are suited for different learners [depending on prior knowledge] into one video so that every student can benefit from one single video” (Altieri, n.d.)
Application: Distributed LearningIbrahim Ercan is an English instructor and Distance Learning Coordinator at the School of Foreign Languages at Meliksah University in Turkey. He discovered H5P through an ERASMUS+ strategic partnership project. Basically he worked with a team to build a MOOC using many H5P content types. Ercan claims that H5P’s interactive video is his favourite content type.
Above: Ercan is delivering a presentation about H5P to English language teachers at an ELT conference at Meliksah University in Kayseri, Turkey in 2015. He argues that H5P is “the next generation web-based tool to create interactive content to help students in their language learning process” (Ercan, 2015).
