The need for reliable technology has never been more apparent. When the world hit the proverbial pause but-ton in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, technology was crucial to keeping people connected to the world around them, helping people maintain some semblance of nor-malcy as it pertained to work and education.
Students and families who have invested in various electronics to help keep their household running should under-stand that maintenance is required to keep these de-vices running effectively. These tips can help keep gadgets in tip-top shape.
• Protect devices from extreme temperatures. Electronic devices are designed to operate under an array of conditions, but pushing those condi-tions can result in dam-age. Most devices are fine between temperatures of 32 F and 90 F. But don’t leave electronics in the car, in a sunny window or outdoors.
• Clean devices regu-larly. Refer to the user’s manual for the proper ways to clean the devices
you rely on each day. Some may require a spe-cific cleaner or a particu-lar fabric to help ensure the device isn’t scratched or damaged. Spray clean-ers on a cloth and then wipe off devices, rather than spraying cleaners directly on electronics. Try a can of compressed air to remove dust from crevices or vents.
• Invest in a surge protector. While surge protector power strips multiply the number of available outlets, they also serve a more im-portant purpose. These devices will cut off power to plugged-in electron-ics if there is a power surge, helping to prevent damage.
• Don’t overcharge. It’s essential to have gadgets charged and ready to go, but overcharging can reduce battery life. Do not leave devices charging overnight. Battery University ®, a free education-al website offering battery information, says that nickel- and lithium-based batter-ies should be stored with a 40 percent state-of-charge. This level minimizes age-related capacity
loss and keeps the battery in good condition.
• Use protective cases. Cases can prevent dam-age if devices are dropped and also may safeguard against scratched screens. Cases and covers also minimize dust and dirt on devices.
• Keep software up-to-date. Security issues may arise when software is not updated, and programs may not run effectively or be compatible with others. Along the same vein, routinely clean out unused files to free up space, and clear cookies and browser histories to maintain speed and efficiency.
Routine maintenance can keep electronics working properly when they’re needed the most.

THOMAS REFUSETHOMAS REFUSE
Hello Residents of the Kern River Valley,
As we enter into September 2020 we are still dealing with the limited lifting of restrictions from the state and county re-garding the COVID-19 lock-down I need to ask when is this going to end.
Our local business owners continue to adapt to the ever changing work place orders which has not slowed down the amount of tourist traffic we see in the valley. The Kern River Valley is a tour-ist destination for many as they attempt to escape the big cities from which they reside and want to come visit the great place we get to call home.
This coming holiday weekend is expected to be very busy in the KRV, let us hope everyone is practicing their social distancing and wearing of facial coverings as they visit our stores and fuel stations. We will get thru this hopefully sooner than later.
With the smoke filling our valley air from the SQF Complex Fire which, as of Monday, is at 35,562 acres with ZERO containment let us hope the weather changes soon to help the crews on the front lines as they continue the battle to protect our forests and the lives of many in the region. Thank you to all the men and women on the front lines for everything you do for all of us.
But our little piece of heaven is not exempt from some of the troubles of the big city, recently our valley has seen a rash of graffiti and with the help of Kern County General Services we were able to get a large amount of it removed in Lake Isabella this past Friday.
The Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce and Kern County General Services is forming a team of graffiti removal individuals to combat this growing problem in the KRV, if you would like to join our team please reach out to the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce as your support is greatly needed.
It is our job as residents to protect the place we call home and I am happy to volunteer my time to keep her as beautiful as possible. Our valley residents continue to do great things, we have multiple volunteer groups who spend many hours weekly picking up debris left behind by our visi-tors among other things and now I am adding one more item to the list.
Please use your Chamber of Commerce, we are here for you.
Thank you, stay safe

3 ways parents can become more involved in their kids’ educationsParents who want to take a more active role in their children’s educations can consider these three simple means to doing just that.
ByMetro Creative
The dawn of a new school year provides a host of opportunities for students and their families. Students begin a new school year with a clean slate, while their parents can look at the start of the school year as an opportunity to take active roles in their children’s educa-tion. Parents who pur-sue that opportunity can have a profound impact on their youngsters’ academic success.
According to an anal-ysis from the National Center for Family and Community Connec-tions with Schools, students perform better in the classroom and enroll in more ad-vanced classes when schools and parents work together. Parents who want to take a more active role in their children’s educations can consider these three simple means to doing just that.
1. Help children establish academic goals.
The National Educa-tion Association notes that the most signifi-cant type of parental
involvement is what moms and dads do at home. Before a new school year begins, parents can discuss ac-ademic goals with their children. Be as specific as possible when es-tablishing goals so kids have something defin-itive to work toward during the school year.
2. Foster a strong learning environment at home.
Numerous studies have highlighted the effects that strong home learning envi-ronments can have on students. A 2014 study published in the Jour-nal of Experimental Psychology found that something as simple as playing games with numbers with children can improve young students’ ability to understand and work with numbers. Con-tinuing to foster that same environment as students continue their educations is equally beneficial. Establish quiet hours after school so kids can concentrate on their homework free from distractions. When kids ask for help, offer it promptly. Such a response sends the
message to students that school is of the utmost importance.
3. Become more involved at school.
Of course, it’s not just what parents do at home that can have a profound impact on their children’s educa-tions. If possible, take an active role at school as well as at home. Get involved with parent-teacher organi-zations and/or offer to assist with extracurric-ular activities. Parents also can attend board of education meetings to
learn about the happen-ings in their children’s school district. Such meetings typically provide parents with an opportunity to comment publicly on any issues they feel are import-ant, providing a great channel for parents to communicate directly with decision-makers.
Parents can take vari-ous steps to be more ac-tive in their children’s educations, which can benefit students in myr-iad ways.
