What is the NOSA Integrated F ive Star System for General Industry? (CMB253)The NOSA Integrated F ive Star System for General Industry (CMB253) is a r isk-based audit standard that can be used in a wide var iety of contexts . The system comprises 72 e lements organised into 5 sect ions . Each element deals with a speci�c component of the standard and l ists condit ions or aspects that should be compl ied with.

What does the NOSA General Industry System Kit comprise of?The System Kit i s in an e lectronic format and the appl icat ion provides a platform for the creat ion, customisat ion, storage and management of the company’s fu l l range of SHE documentat ion.

The Kit provides , amongst other resources , the fol lowing:

Implementat ion Standards :

The 72 e lements that make up CMB253 each have an implementat ion standard. Every standard is made up of a number of pract ical and achievable statements about what should be done or what should be in place in order to meet the requirements of the standard. The statements can be customised to re�ect the part icular c i rcumstances and r isk pro�le of the company.

Each implementat ion standard a lso provides a l i s t of :• Associated documents : this i s a l i s t of documents , such as pol ic ies , s tandards , control registers , appointment letters , etc . that are re levant to and support ive of the e lement . The l i st i s grouped into two categories – those avai lable as part of the Kit and those that the company should develop and establ ish themselves , such as pol icy statements , s i te plans , evacuat ion routes and maintenance schedules .

• Appl icable legis lat ion: this i s a l i s t of the main South Afr ican legis lat ion that is appl icable to the part icular e lement . As legis lat ion is constant ly being revised and updated the intent ion is to provide a general indicat ion only and should not be interpreted as a de�nit ive l i s t ing of a l l current and appl icable legis lat ion.

Support ing Documentat ion:Included as part of the Kit are more than 300 indiv idual documents designed to support and ass ist in achieving the requirements of the 72 e lements . The support ing documents are organised into e ight folders :

• Appointment Letters : 70 templates are avai lable cover ing both legal ly required and CMB253 recommended appointment letters . The appl icat ion a l lows the user to customise each appointment letter – insert ing the company’s name and logo, name of the responsible person and the appointee, as wel l as customis ing the speci�c dut ies and area of responsibi l i ty . Each appointment letter can then be saved within the appl icat ion.

• Informational and Guidel ine Documents : - a wide range of documents that provide general information and guidel ines on var ious topics are avai lable . This i s the reference sect ion of the Kit and contains more than 60 documents that provide general information on topics such as hazardous chemical substances , guidel ines on good stacking and storage pract ices , �re protect ion and �rst a id , ladders , machine guard designs and many other topics .

• NOSA Standards and Documents : - NOSA standards such as CMB001 and CMB253, chapters f rom NOSA’s t ra ining course SAMTRAC, that deal with what a SHE management system is and what needs to be done to establ ish and manage a system, as wel l as other documentat ion which provides guidance on monitor ing and evaluat ing the e�ect iveness of the system you establ ish are avai lable . In addit ion you wi l l �nd a guide to implementing the NOSA system.

• OSH Act Annexures and Other Legal Documents – examples of the var ious forms that an inst i tut ion might need to complete when a reportable incident occurs .

• Pol ic ies , Standards and Procedures : - Gener ic vers ions of pol ic ies such a company pol icy on SHE, an HIV/AIDS pol icy , a pol icy on ergonomics and a vehic le management pol icy are avai lable . There are a lso standards such as ones on waste removal , chains , b locks and lever hoists , e lectr ical warning s igns , emergency l ight ing and many more. A wide range of speci�c safe work instruct ions are a lso avai lable . What is the NOSA Educat ion Sector System Kit?This System Kit i s an e lectronic manual that contains more than 320 indiv idual documents designed to ass ist educat ional inst i tut ions (preschools , schools , col leges and univers i t ies) with the establ ishment , implementat ion and ongoing management of an integrated health , safety and environmental management system consistent with the requirements of the NOSA Integrated F ive Star System Standard for the Educat ion Sector (CMB700) .

Why do you need the NOSA Educat ion Sector System Kit?The CMB700 has been developed in response to a growing demand from schools and other educat ional inst i tut ions (col leges and univers i t ies) for a health , safety and environmental system standard which takes account of the unique context and act iv i t ies associated with an educat ional inst i tut ion. As such CMB700 not only focuses on the context and act iv i t ies of the persons employed at an educat ional inst i tut ion, but a lso on the context and act iv i t ies that students and other persons who vis i t and use the fac i l i t ies are engaged in .

Who can implement the NOSA Educat ion Sector System Kit?CMB700 is r isk based. This means that only those r isks that are re levant to a part icular inst i tut ion should be appl ied and the Standard can be customised to �t the unique r isk pro�le of an inst i tut ion. As a result CMB700 can be implemented in a l l types of educat ional inst i tut ions – f rom a smal l pre-school to a large complex tert iary inst i tut ion such as a univers i ty .

The system is designed to ensure that the educat ional inst i tut ion compl ies with a l l re levant legal requirements and with re levant and prescr ibed corporate standards , and is compatible with Internat ional health , safety and environmental standards such as the internat ional ly recognised standard for an Occupat ional Health and Safety Management System, OHSAS 18001, the Internat ional Standard for an Environmental Management System, ISO 14001 as wel l as the internat ional Standard for a Qual i ty Management System, ISO 9001.
