Community Garden Trial On Saturday 12th April, a small group of Norwood folks got together at the Cheriton St property to set up our trial Community Garden, which has been in the making for the last couple of years. Projects like these are really at the heart of Norwood Neighbourhood Association, so it was exciting to be finally getting this project off the ground (literally!). At our last committee meeting we were discussing options for procuring a shed, when our Vice Chair, Deb, suggested looking on Gumtree. She straight away pulled out her phone, searched for ‘sheds’, and found one for free in East Perth - what luck! Upon closer inspection, it was actually on West Pde - merely a hop, skip and a jump away. So after the meeting, Deb, Anton and Diane trekked up to the address on the ad, and left a note saying the NNA would love to take the shed. Before Deb made it home she got a call from the ‘seller’, so they went back to have a look, and arranged to have it dismantled the following week. Fast forward to ANZAC Day, and Grant - who gave us the shed - came down along with Lee, Tracy and Tim, from Summers St, to re-assemble it at the Community Garden site. How’s that for community! Not to mention, a gratifying addition to our impressive collection of recycled and upcycled materials being used in the garden. 1 Norwood News Worm Farm Workshop On Saturday 25th May, Mindarie Regional Council waste education officer, Peg Davies, will be running a home composting workshop at our Community Garden site (at the back of 34 Cheriton St). Community Garden “Beauty Bee” - Sat 31 May"Now that we have the bare bones of the Community Garden built, we reckon it is time to pretty it up a bit!

Camille and Deb have some good ideas for beautifying the CG area and turning it into an inviting place where people will enjoy spending time with each other and getting their hands dirty cultivating some veggies. We especially want the garden to be welcoming for our seniors and kids, so we want to get some bright and cheerful outdoor furniture set up, and get the kids involved in some painting and decorating, and perhaps making a scarecrow or two!

We would love for you to join us on Saturday 31st May for our ‘Beauty Bee’! 10am - 4pm; come when it suits you. We will have an early BBQ dinner in Norwood Park afterwards for anyone who’s keen. Please contact Deb ([email protected] or 0402 577 840) if you plan to come along & what time, so we can organise jobs and activities for everyone.

Also, if you have any of the following lying around and would like to donate it, let Deb know!

-Egg-cartons; empty cherry-tomato or strawberry punnets -Outdoor timber furniture; paint. -Mesh (metal or flyscreen material), shade-cloth, plywood and/or villa board. -A tree trunk or thick branches that could be sawn into little seats for the kids.

Ecco Apartments

It’s great to see the colourful ‘ecco’ buildings, on the corner of Lord and Summers St, finally completed and beginning to be dotted with lights as new neighbours move in. If you are new to the area, please get in touch - we’d love to meet you!

Working Groups

Currently the Norwood Neighbourhood Association (Inc) is championed by a committee, which meets roughly once a month, and until recently much of our work has been in planning and putting together proposals.

Now that we have got the Community Garden set up, and have built momentum for projects like the ‘Adopt A Verge’ program, we hope to keep the committee as lean as possible, and have most of the activities and projects of the Association coordinated and carried out by interest-based working groups.

Suggested groups include:

• Local History • Community Garden • Seniors • Fundraising • Neighbourhood Watch • Social Events

If you have a particular interest in any of the above, or something else, please let us know!

Recently Claisebrook Rd and Summers St were given a facelift, with new bitumen, paved ‘nib-outs’ at the T-junctions, marked parking spaces, and a traffic calming ‘speed bump’ on Summers St - which seems to be working!
