ANTIQUES NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2014
VOL. FOUR ISSUE 12
Through the Eyes of a Child
The sheer mention of the word Christmas can bring an adult to their knecringing at the very thought. Now, whisper the same word to a child anyou’ll receive an entirely different response. Expect to hear a flurry of f
words like snow (yes, snow is fun, remember?), presents, decorations anthe biggest, most exciting word of all…Santa! The big, jolly man in the bright red suit will incite a riot in any setting involving the five and unde
crowd.
Christmas is a wild ride in slow motion for kids. In their eyes its pure
magic and the possibilities are endless. I believe we could all take a lessfrom our younger counterparts! They know the drill and they love everysingle minute of it!
Why not step back for a moment and see things the way they do? Woul
be unreasonable to actually enjoy yourself this week? I think not. Takedeep breath and relax. Drive around town and see the lights, attend a loc
holiday concert, go play in the snow (if we’re lucky enough to get any)!Enjoy some wassail, splurge a little, have an extra cookie. Its Christmas
a time to enjoy!
From all of us at Norwood, we’d like to wish you a very, Merry Christm
.

We are so very proud! Norwood became the
first Antique Mall in the Mid Ohio Valley to ever
receive the Judge’s Choice Award at the 28th Annual Festival of Trees!!!
We chose to honor the holiday with a fully-
mobile, Christmas mantle with all of the
trimmings! Jess Puglisi-Sanders, coordinator of
the event, wrote to us and stated our entry was
beautiful and was certainly the talk of the
festival. She boasted on its impressiveness and
good design, and right she was!
When the project began, our Norwood elves
dove right in to design, build and decorate our
entry to bring forth a challenge that took noprisoners. We were able to raise almost seven
hundred dollars that night, all of which willsupport local programs for the disabled
children of our community, which is all that
really matters!
We’re already planning our entry for next year.
It ’s going to be grand! I just hope they’re readyfor us! When it's time to remove the ornaments from the
tree and store them again, you should first dust
them with gentle makeup brushes. Always remove
the hooks, which may cause scratches while in
storage.
Store your antique ornaments in sturdy boxes,
capable of keeping out moisture. Some pros
recommend Rubbermaid or Sterilite. Better still if
you can find such storage containers with trays.
Don't wrap ornaments in tissue unless you're sure it
is acid-free. Ask for acid-free tissue at your craft
store. If the ornaments are colored, use a non-
buffered or pH neutral tissue for the best results.
Cheers for now!

Have you ever gone to slumber on a mystic Christmas Eve, full
of happy Christmas visions childish fancies love to weave?
Did you ever lie and listen for the sound of tiny hoofs, as oldSanta’s reindeer scampered over sleeping people’s roof?
Did you ever start in rapture when you heard a distant sleigh, thinking, “That must be old Santa, coming now upon his way”?
Have you snuggled in the bedclothes, one eye peeping, one eyeshut tight, filled with thrills of expectation, thrills of wonderand delight?
Have you heard the tinkle vanish, as the sleigh passed swiftly
by followed by your drowsy senses and a low, regretful sigh?
Have you drifted into dreamland so the breaking of the dawn
found you sleeping, stockings loaded, and old Santa COME andGONE?
If you have not, you’ve been cheated, though by fame and
fortune kissed, you can never know the rapture of the
childhood joys you’ve missed.

COLLECTING VINTAGE
CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS
Whether you collect a one of a kind sterlingsilver tree ornament or hand-carved folk art
Santas there's plenty of options to begin yourvintage ornament collection, even at this late
date in the season. You have many choices…
glitter, celluloid, chenille, cellophane, metal,
paper, hard plastic or glass!
Until the Victorian era, most Christmas trees
were decorated with candles, cookies, and fruit,
but in the mid-1800's German craftsmen began
producing hand blown glass tree ornaments in
shapes like stars, fruit and angels. Thus, theornament tradition was born. We each have
our own opinion of the perfect Christmastree...whether it be covered in multi-colored or
white lights, be natural, artificial, large or small.
Luckily, each option permits us to hold a piece
of history right in the palm of our hand.
Old World, clip-on bird ornaments made of
hand-blown glass were produced in Germany,
ca. 1890 - post WWII. The fanciful creations ofJapan, Czechoslovakia, and Columbia are also
fine additions to any collection. Shiny Brites
were sold at Woolworth from 1940-1960 at
just a nickel each. Similarly, mercury glass
ornaments come in bright colors and often
feature sparkling silvery indents that castshimmering reflections everywhere.
Perhaps something a tad more contemporarywould catch your eye such as the wide variety
of retired Hallmark, Kurt Adler, Department 56
and The White House Ornament Collection.
Someday, they, too, will be considered antiques.
Regardless of your choice, I'm sure your tree
glows with the shimmering memories that eachornaments holds for you and your family. As
long as each one is in its place of honor on the
tree, this is all that matters. Remember, it's
Christmas! Put on a little Nat King Cole, dim the
lights and relax. Merry Christmas!
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist,
and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas
How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus." - Francis Pharcellus Church
