Names in the 2015/2016 yearbook How would you like your child’s name to appear in the yearbook? We intend to put your child’s full name in the book. Please look out for a slip that can be used to make minor changes. For example, you can change Chukwuemeka to Emeka, Olawale to Ola, Rebecca to Becky or David to Dave. The slip was sent home today. To make changes, please return the slip to Ms Chioma (at the school reception) or send an email to [email protected] by Monday 6th June 2016. Cool in the Pool (9am to 12noon on Saturday 4th June 2016) Get ready for another splash of fun. This term’s Cool in the Pool will take place from 9am to 12noon on Saturday 4th June 2016. Pyjama Day (Friday 3rd June 2016) Today, we got out of bed, got dressed for school, and found ourselves at school in our nightclothes. How did that happen? It was Pyjama Day! We raised money for the Keeping It Real Foundation. The Keeping It Real Foundation supports disabled and vulnerable people in our society. The funds raised from the Pyjama Day and the Biggest Loser Competition will be used to support children in a care home.

Friday 3rd June 2016 Dear Parents,

Thank you for three amazing years

Being part of a prestigious school like NIS has been a great honour. The NIS community is exceptional in many ways. Together, over the past three years, we have worked tirelessly to improve our school and quality of the provision to our children. I consider it a privilege to have been part of our many achievements.

With a heavy heart, I announce to the school community that this is my last term at NIS. It has taken an entire academic year to recruit a capable educator, Mr Adrian Scarlett, who will be the Head of Secondary from next term. Mr Adrian has an enviable set of achievements and skills. I am convinced that our school will benefit greatly from his experience. I am also confident that his collaboration with our talented Head of Primary, Ms Nkechi, will bring about a stronger NIS.

Whilst I am excited about the opportunities ahead, I will miss the NIS community. Our students are amazing! They make me smile or laugh every day. They bring about immense joy and fulfillment. We have very dynamic staff. They have understood and embraced my somewhat unconventional approach to leadership. You, the parents, have been very supportive. You have trusted my judgment and supported my decisions. I will have many fond memories of our special school.

I understand that this announcement will generate some questions. Please feel free to ask; it is my duty to address them. My door is always open. Once again, I thank you and offer my best wishes for Norwegian International School.

Best wishes,

Dr Tayo Popoola

Meet Mr Adrian

I am excited to be joining NIS in the forthcoming academic year as Head of Secondary. It is a privilege to be joining a thriving international school with a commitment to academic excellence and the educational needs of all students. The school website and newsletters convey a real sense of happiness and joy at NIS and I look forward to being part of this wonderful community in Port Harcourt.

I will be moving to Nigeria with my partner Debra and our baby, Michael. I also have an older son, Bongani, who is sixteen years old and studying in the UK. Debra is Zambian, Bongani was born in Botswana, and Michael is French by birth, making us a truly international family!

I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Science, a Post Graduate Certificate of Education both from Manchester Metropolitan University and a Master of Arts Degree from the Open University. I have worked in education for over twenty years. In that time I have taught in three schools in the United Kingdom (my country of origin), in Botswana (as a teacher trainer), and international schools in Malawi and Zambia. I currently work as Curriculum Director at Marymount International School in Paris, France.

My philosophy of education is rooted in my belief that an outstanding teacher does not just teach their subject but must touch the hearts and minds of the children entrusted to their care. This is a tremendous responsibility and one that all members of a school community must take seriously. It is the duty of an educator to instill in his/her students the values of respect, forgiveness, openness and joy and to cherish each student and to be sensitive to the diverse talents, abilities and needs of each one. In doing so, we seek to create unity through diversity. This philosophy is arguably more important in the international sector where children have the opportunity to develop international mindedness.

In my current job at Marymount I have had responsibility for leading and managing all aspects of the academic life of the school. During my three-year tenure I have overseen the process of curriculum review across all subjects. This has involved intense collaboration with all the teachers in the school to ensure that the scope and sequence of the curriculum is in line with best practice in the international sector. I have also worked tirelessly in leading the school’s focus on professional development. This has involved developing a bespoke institutional model of in service training that has involved the use of internal expertise as well as outside providers and digital resources.

As Head of Secondary at NIS, I will build upon the excellent work of Dr. Tayo to enhance the reputation of NIS as a leader of international education in Nigeria and beyond. In doing so, I will seek partnerships and collaboration with colleagues, parents, and the wider community. Education is a partnership. When schools and parents work closely together children are more likely to be successful. An outstanding school cultivates its relationship with its parental body and ensures that parents and teachers work together to ensure the best for the students. Effective communications are important. If heart speak to heart then the chances of a school producing outstanding young people for the future of their world is more likely.

I look forward to meeting all of you at the start of the school year and working closely with you to ensure the best possible education for your children.

Adrian Scarlett!

Biggest Loser Challenge (Week 3 of 5) The Biggest Loser Challenge will end in two weeks. The competition is fierce. See the progress chart on the next page. Who will be the biggest loser? Through this weight loss challenge, we will raise funds for the Keeping It Real Foundation. You can help raise funds and support the participants by:

• making a one-off donation through Ms Chioma at the school reception • pledging to donate an amount for every kilogramme a participant loses.

The donation should then be made by Monday 20th June 2016.

Food for thought As we prepare for the Year 11 Graduation Ceremony (2pm on Friday 10th June 2016), let us consider the words of Marian Wright Edelmann, an American activist who became the first African American to be admitted to The Mississippi Bar:

Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it

See you at Cool in the Pool tomorrow! Ms Nkechi and Dr Tayo Heads of Primary and Secondary Schools
