Summary of the students' national histories

The students were asked to write what they know about Norwegian history. They were not given any help in what to write about. They did it at school, so that they wouldn't seek help using internet or other sources. Some students wrote keywords/sentences instead of a text. Their anwers focus mainly on a few central points in our history, and most of them just mention the events without giving any further information.

1. Use of periodsThey don't use the periods. They talk about the viking era. But they are not sure about the period for this or don't mention the years. They don't link it to the periods in any way.

2. Beginning of national historyThe viking era is mentioned by very many as the first period.

3. CharactersHarald Hårfagre, Saint Olav, Leiv Eriksson, Snorre, Karl Johan, Harald V, ABB are individuals that are mentioned. The laps are also mentioned. They don't connect historic events very much to individual people.

4. Events The constitution of 1814 is mentioned by everybody, the viking era of almost everybody. The unions by about 75% of the students. Christianity, the black plague and second world war by about 50%. The terror attack is mentioned by one third! The discovery of oil by about one fourth of the students.Democratic movement, industrialization, migration patterns are never or almost never mentioned. The independence from Sweden in 1905 is mentioned by few students.

5. Point of viewThe students mainly write about simple facts with no connection to the context and with little content and understanding, cohesion. They show no special point of view; they don't say « I think» etc. Their story has a mix of political and social points of view, but mostly social if any. One student writes with a bit elaboration about development of society.

6. The narrativeThe students manage to not mix national history too much with European history or local history. Exceptions are the 1st May and the 8th of March. It's not a linear narrative. It has little cohesion. It's not a militant or judgment narrative.
