Welcome to Bangkok! “Team Norway” in Thailand is honoured to host the 2014 Norway-Asia Business Summit. This event has become the most important meeting place for Norwegian enterprises that are already active or potentially interested in Asia. This year, we have been able to convene a superb line-up of Norwegian business leaders, politicians and officials, as well as brilliant experts on Asia, and the Thai-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce should be proud of its excellent organising efforts. Increasingly and for a number of years, Asia has become an important destination for Norwegian businesses and investments. Asia accounts for around 1/3 of the world’s GDP and global trade in goods, and around 1/5 of the world’s trade in services. Developments in this part of the world are of significant importance to value creation and growth in other parts of the world, including Norway.

We need to have a good understanding of the driving forces, the underlying trends, and the economic and political developments in this versatile and vibrant region. I hope that the Summit program will give you new insights in issues ranging from macroeconomic to the more country specific. Moreover, I hope that the Summit will provide an opportunity for representatives from the private and public sector to discuss the opportunities and challenges that we are facing in this particular region. I wish you all a pleasant stay in Bangkok and a successful Norway-Asia Business Summit 2014! Katja Nordgaard Ambassador of Norway to Thailand

Through its longstanding engagement with Myanmar, Norway has a unique opportunity to contribute positively to Myanmar’s future by bringing in responsible businesses to the country. Norwegian companies are able to showcase principles of decent work, corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability. The first Norwegian business delegation visited Myanmar in May 2012 followed by ministerial visits later that year. In April 2013, Norway’s Minister of Trade and Industry visited Myanmar accompanied by a high-level trade delegation. Many contacts were established and since then several Norwegian companies have entered Myanmar. These companies bring with them a desire to help Myanmar realise long-term goals and to leapfrog into a modern and vibrant society by offering technological solutions and sustainability on a level not previously seen in the country. A dynamic private sector is critical for long-term, sustainable poverty eradication through creating value and broadly based wealth, tax revenues and productive jobs. Better standards

of living will also help to propel further democratisation. Trade and foreign investments will have both immediate and long-term benefits in strengthening local capacity and fostering local competition. Norway attaches great importance to business ethics, corporate conduct and environmental sustainability. We believe that Norwegian companies entering Myanmar can act as role models by setting high standards, thereby building capacity and improving the livelihood for the people of Myanmar. The Thai-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1996 with the aim of facilitating increased trade and investment between Thailand and Norway. It provides members with a forum to improve business conditions and opportunities as well as creating venues and channels for exchange and sharing of information. The Chamber organises business related events from breakfast meetings covering current business affairs, to topical business seminars and dinner events featuring guest speakers. Current membership stands at around 80 premium and corporate members in addition to some 20 individuals. The Chamber office is co-located with Innovation Norway’s representative office in Bangkok’s central business district and also works closely with the Royal Norwegian Embassy as part of Team Norway. Through its membership of the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand, the Chamber identifies challenges and opportunities in doing business in Thailand, seeking support in Thai Government policies to address such issues. This includes interaction with key stakeholders in Thailand relevant to the business community such

as the Board of Trade, the Thai Customs Department, The Immigration Department, The Revenue Department and the Board of Investment as well as providing access to top officials in the Thai administration. The Thai-Norwegian Business Review Magazine is issued four times per year. Business Review features interesting articles about business, trade and life style in Norway, Thailand and the neighbouring countries. It is distributed free to the members and other contacts. The magazine also doubles as the Chamber’s member directory. The Chamber website http://www.norcham.com contains news and information about the latest Chamber activities. It also provides links to useful intelligence within business and trade in Thailand.
