Partnership Coordinator’s Corner: ~ A Word from Mrs. Wiechert

Hello Families,

Welcome back. In case you have not noticed, it’s cold. Dangerously cold. ECASD policy states that recess will be held indoors when the temperature is below 0 degrees or -10 wind-chill. Children will be outside for recesses if it is above 0 degrees.

This, as you know, can still be . Please send your child to

school with appropriate clothes for the weather. Warm winter coats, snow-pants, hats, gloves and scarves are a MUST for the kids on the playground, and walking from the building to the bus/home. Please follow the link for a few hints on battling the cold outside: http://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/En/HealthAZ/SafetyandtheEnvironment/OutdoorSafety/Pages/Dressing-For-The-Cold.aspx

A “Read Lead” from the NW Librarian:

As it is a brand-new year, you may be thinking about New Year’s resolutions for your family. Does your family have a goal to adopt a healthier lifestyle? Do you think about reducing screen time? Or, would you like to spend more time together? Believe it or not, there are fun New Year’s resolutions that are both healthy for a child’s brain, and allow you more time to spend with your kids. Here’s a hint: your child’s doctor (and librarian) encourages you to do this activity every day.

READ A BOOK—HERE, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE! Reading aloud doesn’t have to be limited to your home or only at bedtime. If you’re a parent, you know every reading experience does not look the same. Though it seems futile, your child still benefits from hearing you read aloud to them. Even when it seems they’re not paying attention or are distracted by their surroundings. Remember, a child is never too old to be read to. Or, switch it up and have your child read to you!

New Year’s Resolutions: 4 Simple Ways to Read More with your Children in 2018

Resolution #1 “I will fill wait time with book time instead of screen time.” Goal: Keep some books in your car or bag. Whether you are waiting in line at the grocery store,

a waiting room at the doctor, or preparing a meal in your kitchen, you can share the love of books and reading with your child.

Resolution #2 “I will keep books where my child can see and reach them.” Goal: Make books as easy to reach as your child’s toys. Think about keeping books in a basket on

the floor and on a low book shelf.

Resolution #3 I will make reading a part of our family routine. Goal: Read aloud to your child just 15 minutes a day. Start with just a few minutes at a time. It does not

have to be done all in one sitting. Show your child that books are a fun and important part of family life and routines by letting them see YOU reading a book, too.

Resolution #4 I will visit the local library with my children. Goal: Visit your local library and see what free services they have to offer. Go to story times, let your

child choose which books to borrow, ask the librarians for good book ideas, and choose something to read yourself!

The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library is making it easier for you to fulfill any reading goals you may have set for 2018. They are forgiving almost all overdue fines and no longer charging late fees for books returned past their due date. For details, just follow the link to read the Leader Telegram article:

MAPE Moments What to Do, What to Do

A Note from Music If your fourth or fifth grader is interested in joining the Singing Eagles, please have them ask for an application from Mrs. Miller. The deadline for joining is Tuesday, January 9th.

High Five from PhysEd Students in grades 2nd – 5th will be snow-shoeing in P.E. class. Of course, only when

we have enough snow & the outside temperatures cooperate! Students in grades K & 1st will be sledding in P.E. class in P.E. class. Students will need snow gear

(boots, snow pants, coat, mittens etc.) for P.E. 😊

Again, when we have enough snow and when the temperatures outside co-

operate, NW students will be able to use the sleds at recess time. Don’t forget your snow-gear

for recess also (boots, snow-pants, coat, gloves, etc.)

Coming Soon: Girls on the Run (GOTR) will be getting back on track for another season of fun and

exercise. Girls in grades 3-5 are invited to lace up their running shoes at the end of

February. You do not have to be a “runner” to join GOTR. This program is about

encouraging healthy minds and healthy habits. Girls are encouraged to run, but

walkers are welcome too. Class size will be limited. If more applications are

received than we have room for, registrants will be determined by lottery. Registration forms will be

The Northwoods Wrap-up

Before school let out for the Winter Break, Mrs. Hensley’s 4th grade class presented their

“Living Wax Museum”. The students did a research projects on historical figures. They then

created a tri-fold storyboard to display their research. Students dressed as the character they

studied and gave a live presentation to the “patrons” who visited

their exhibit. The students learned a lot during the course of their

project. In this, they were also able to teach their fellow students

and visitors a bit about their persona.

graders give the adults a history lesson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Wednesday December 20th, the entire school took part in a
bit of twisted fun. The students combined classes, older
students helping their younger classmates with balloon art.
The students had three tutorial videos to choose from, but
many just created their own “balloon art” sculpture. Students
and staff alike had a great time
More Northwoods Wrap-up
The week before the break teachers staff and students had a fun week dressing to a theme for
each day. Red Day, Green Day, Silver/Gold/Shiny Day & Ugly sweater, Holiday theme day.
Many classes had a little time for a treat during the day and Thursday concluded with a
Northwoods sing-a-long. Here are a few pictures of our spirited Northwoods classmates and
staff.
