Having served as your superintendent for the last seven years, I realize that we have literally weathered many winters together. But our 2014-15 school year is quickly winding down. We can almost see the finish line for state testing, and our elementary children are ready to once again overrun the playgrounds. Each year as we approach spring, I feel a sense of renewal. Soon the smell of fresh cut grass will fill the air, and our cars will finally be clean from all of the road salt! One other change inevitably takes place this time of the year at Northwestern, staff changes. With the changes to the state retirement systems, we are seeing greater numbers of experienced educators leave our ranks. This year is no exception. Besides the many teachers and support staff planning to retire at the end of this year, we will bid farewell to our ele-mentary principal, Mrs. Pierson who has been a fixture at Northwestern Elementary for the past 18 years!

She writes, “When I reflect on my years at Northwestern Elementary, I have been so fortunate to work with an exemplary staff and supportive, caring families. I must admit though, that kids come to my mind first. My memories are full of kids and interactions with them. Hugs, movie nights, Right to Read family nights, jumping rope, kissing pigs, spring fling, teachers inviting me to share books with their students, handmade cards and Valentines, P.E. with the principal, smiles sticky with pizza, bubble gum parties, Halloween parades, dads and donuts, rocket launches, grandparents sharing lunch, muffins and moms, field days, ‘Hi, Mrs. Pierson!’ as I walk through the building, and many, many notes from the children and parents. OSBA AWARD OF ACHIEVEMENT

Donna Myers, board member of Northwestern Local Schools, was presented with her 14th Ohio School Boards Associa-tion’s Award of Achievement at its spring conference, which was held in Clayton on Tuesday, March 10. The Award of Achievement is given to school board members in recog-nition of their commitment to training and leadership activities at the local, regional, and statewide level.

Filling Mrs. Pierson’s shoes will be a familiar face, Mrs. Romine, who has served as our elementary assistant principal for the past two years. She shares that she looks forward to an amazing 2015-16 school year. “I believe in the importance of building and strengthening relationships with students, parents, and staff. This is the foundation for our success!” She plans on working together with everyone to provide data-driven learning opportunities for each student and to inspire and challenge them to realize success. We congratulate Mrs. Pierson on her retirement, and we welcome Mrs. Romine as we continue to focus on this new season!

The Clark County Agricultural Society came to visit 3rd grade on February 3. The students learned about the importance of farming in the community and soil conservation. They also learned about the various crops that grow in the area and byproducts that come from the crops. One of their favorite parts was the visitor that joined us… a baby piglet!

On January 16, senior Andrew Franzen received the Martin Luther King Peace-maker Award in a ceremony held at Clark State Community College's Hol-lenbach Bayley Hall. Andrew is shown here accepting the award from Corey Holliday of Clark State. He was nominat-ed by his classmates for the honor.

Northwestern Men’s Bowling Team

Northwestern Men’s Bowling team placed 1st in the Clark County Tourna-ment. Congratulations to these young men for their hard work and accom-plishments! Go Warriors!!

Several students in Mrs. Tipton's class entered an optional Scho-lastic writing contest. The Taylor Swift “This is How I Shake it Off!” Writing Contest encouraged stu-dents to write a one-page crea-tive essay or poem about how they deal with bullies or others that have the power to hurt them.

The Columbus Zoo visited the Ele-mentary on Friday, February 6th to share more animals and their habi-tats.

Power of the Pen

The 7th grade team received 1st place out of 18 schools in the district tour-nament. Kat Lee won 4th place out of 108 writers, and also had one writing selected as a “Best in Round” piece. Allex Smith won 12th place out of 108 writers. Mikaela Peoples won 14th place out of 108 writers, she also won an award for her writing in the practice round. Haylee Flatt won an award for her writing in the prac-tice round.

Child Find

Northwestern Local Schools is committed to

the location and identification of children from

birth through age 21 in need of Early Interven-

tion, preschool special education, or school-

age services. If a disability is suspected, a re-

ferral can be made for an evaluation to deter-

mine special education eligibility. If you would

like more information regarding the Child Find

process, please contact Chrissy Miller at 964-

1318 ext. 3142.

Surrogate Parents Needed

Students placed in foster care within the district who qualify for special education services are re-quired by the Ohio Department of Education to be assigned surrogate parents. A surrogate parent is an individual who is appointed to act in place of a parent to make educational decisions for the child. Surrogate parents play an integral role in a child’s education, and their time volunteering in this role is valued. Training is offered online for individuals interested in serving as surrogate parents. Please contact Chrissy Miller at 964-1318 ext. 3142 for more information.
