ON THE BUMP

Joe Schindler (0-2, 6.00 ERA) will make his third start of the season on Friday night. Freshman Hank Christie (0-1, 3.86 ERA) is set to take the mound for the first game of the Saturday doubleheader while Matt Gannon (0-0, 1.50 ERA) will start the second. Junior Tommy Bordignon will get the nod on Sunday.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

Alex Erro was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week in baseball for his performances against Middle Tennessee, Belmont and Lipscomb at the Mule Mix Classic (Feb. 24-26). Erro led the Wildcats with a .700 batting average, .769 on base percentage and 1.100 slugging percentage over the weekend. He collected three multi-hit games and had a team-high seven hits.

He is the first player to earn freshman of the week honors since Joe Hoscheit on May 19, 2014.

10 x 22

Northwestern tallied 10-or-more hits in 22 games during the 2016 campaign. Northwestern has matched its single-game high mark of 17 hits in a contest on three occasions last season – vs. Butler (March 5) and at San Diego State (March 11/March 12).

GRAND SLAMS

Matt Hopfner launched his fourth career home run and his first-career Grand Slam in Sunday’s game at Lipscomb. Last season, the #B1GCats hit a pair of Grand Slams. Jakc Claeys (vs. Chicago State) and Jack Dunn (vs. Michigan) each recorded dingers with the bases loaded.

YOUTH MOVEMENT

All 10 of Northwestern’s freshmen saw action over opening weekend and five of the 10 newcomers registered starts, including pitchers Hank Christie and Matt Gannon. Catcher Nick Paciorek made a pair of starts behind the dish and was one of two Wildcats to register multiple hits on the weekend.

IRON ‘CATS

Northwestern’s left side of the infield never changed its look during the 2016 campaign. Third baseman Connor Lind and shortstop Jack Dunn started and played in all 54 games last season.

The streak is up to 60 games after the pair started and played in all three games last weekend.

Lind hit .289 last season on 58 hits. He was a constant on the bases for the #B1GCats, at one point reaching base 24 games in a row. On the defensive end, Lind posted a .953 fielding percentage at the hot corner and had 41 put outs.

Dunn posted a .258 batting average in his first collegiate season and was tied for third on the team with 55 knocks in addition to leading the #B1GCats with seven steals. He was solid in the infield, boasting a .952 fielding percentage.

Both Dunn (Sunbelt Baseball League) and Lind (Coastal Plain League) were named to their summer league all-star games.

EIGHT NEWCOMERS

Northwestern head baseball coach Spencer Allen and his staff have announced that eight individuals from across the country will join the program in the fall of 2017 to mark Allen’s second recruiting class since taking over. The class featuresfive pitchers (3 LHP, 2 RHP) a catcher, infielder and an outfielder. WNUR ANNOUNCEMENT

Prior to the start of the 2017 season, head coach Spencer Allen announced that every game of the 2017 season is scheduled to be broadcast on either TV, radio or online. The announcement came in large part to an agreement between the university’s athletic department and WNUR Sports to carry all of the Wildcats’ road games. Matt McHugh will travel with the Wildcats to Nashville to broadcast the 2017 Mule Mix Classic.

ALLEN MANAGES USA BASEBALL

USA Baseball tabbed Spencer Allen as a manager of one of its teams at the 2016 Tournament of Stars, presented by Major League Baseball, last summer.

The tournament took place at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., from June 21-26. It was used to evaluate and identify athletes to be invited to the USA Baseball 18U National Team Trials.
