~ Director’s Corner ~
Hello folks, so very sorry this quarters newsletter
has taken so long to put together and publish. It was “held
back” due to a lack of articles and information and I did
not want to publish an empty newsletter. I will be working
closely with area coordinators and other members to make
sure next year’s newsletters will have some fun and
interesting content. That being said, if you would like to
write a build or how to article for submission next year
please let me know! Thank you to Mike Ingram for writing
a report on the Redmond, OR event and providing photos
for this issue! You will also find an Idaho event write up,
as well as one on the 2017 NWSAM Championships. I
hope you all enjoy!

Over the weekend of June 16th through the 18th, I
took my first trip into Idaho for the North Idaho Scale
Qualifier in Athol. The facilities at the field were
wonderful, and showcased a long and well maintained
grass strip. There was plenty of parking for the event, and
great folks to visit and fly with. The club also brought in a
food truck to make it easy for everyone to grab a quick
bite and refreshments. The field also had a lot of room for
your RVs or tents, but I chose to drive a little farther into
Sandpoint and stay in one of the many hotels to choose
from.
Saturday morning brought pretty good weather for
flying, featuring winds from about 8 to 12mph and
overcast skies. Sunday was exactly the same which
allowed us to get a full five rounds of flying in over the
weekend. Results are posted below, as well as some
photos. Thanks to Tim McGee and all of his folks for put-
ting on a great contest! This is one I will be sure to put on
my calendar every year.

Early this spring, Paul Haynes contacted me about
having a scale contest in Redmond Oregon. The event was
intended to replace the North Plains Oregon Qualifier. I
agreed to CD the event, my wife Terri agreed to be
scorekeeper, and several WRAF members agreed to be
judges. The Field of Dreams Scale Rally came to fruition
on July 28th through the 30th. The weather cooperated; the
field was well suited and prepared for the event. I want to
thank Richard Butler and the Redmond R/C Club
members who took care of all the logistics for the event. I
also need to thank my wife for keeping score, and all of
the WRAF members who judged. Special thanks also to
the Club photographer Glenn Means for his beautiful
photographic work. At the end of the event all the
participants were presented with a compact disk full of
photos. The event went off without a hitch! I guess we did
okay, because the Field of Dreams Flyers have approved a
contest for May 18th thru 20th, 2018. Save the date for this
great event next year!

The Northwest Scale Aero Modelers’
Championship event was held on August 24th through the
27th at the beautiful Red Apple Flyers’ Field in
Wenatchee, WA. This was my second year in a row
attending the event, and was by far the biggest scale
contest I have attended. This contest just seems to
continue to grow year after year, and boasted 34 registered
pilots! I am sure that number will only continue to grow,
and I am excited to see just how much bigger it will be
next year. If you have never been to Wenatchee, this is a
must see venue and a great group of guys and gals to be
around.
The weather for this event was much the same as
last year when I attended. Very breezy for static judging
on Thursday, and the wind effectively closed down any
and all flying for the day. Friday morning through Sunday
afternoon was absolutely gorgeous and perfect flying
weather! Eighty to ninety degree temps with light to
medium winds right down the runway.
Flying began Friday morning around 9 or 9:30 and
two rounds were completed by the end of the day.
Saturday was a carbon copy of Friday with another two
rounds of competition being flown, with the fifth and final
round being flown on Sunday morning. Below is a list of
the contest results.
