College Application Process Step #2: Ordering Transcripts

- Order your transcript (on Parchment) before completing and submitting the online application.

- Verify that your transcript is correct when viewed in Parchment before ordering. If it is not accurate, see Ms. Purcell in the Counseling Office.

- Step-by-step instructions (including a video tutorial) are on NHS website. Click on the following link: Parchment (Transcripts)

College Application Process Step #2 Cont.: Sending Transcripts to

a Common Application College - To have your transcript sent to Common App colleges, log on to www.parchment.com and select the Common App tab. The transcript must be sent directly to the Common App, not to the individual colleges. ***Note: Colleges that use the Common App are preceded by the letter

“C” in the Parchment website.

- Once you request that a transcript be sent to the Common App, Parchment will send the transcript to the Common App online system where it will be matched with your letter of recommendation from the counselor.

18

College Application Process Step #2 Cont.: Sending Transcripts

- Note: When you request a transcript from Parchment in the fall, you are sending a sixth semester transcript.

- If your college(s) requires a mid year report (seventh semester grades) or a final report (8th semester grades), you must request another transcript from Parchment each time, and indicate what date you want them sent by selecting the send “now” or “hold for grades” option. This is not done for you automatically.

19

College Application Process Step #2 Cont.: Sending Transcripts

- Ms. Purcell will upload the transcript(s) to Parchment once she receives request from Parchment (after you create your account and order them to be sent to destinations).

- Parchment notifies you via e-mail when the high school has made the transcript(s) available to Parchment. Allow at least four weeks for the colleges to acknowledge they have received it.

- If you have questions about the receipt of a transcript sent by Parchment to the college, contact the college. For all other questions, contact Parchment at Parchment help

20

- Applicants must send official ACT or SAT scores for every college application they complete.

- If you did not take advantage of the opportunity for four free score reports at the time he/she took the ACT/SAT, he/she will need to order/send the scores via ww.actstudent.org or www.collegeboard.org

- A nominal cost is incurred for each ACT/SAT score request.

21

College Application Process Step #3:

Sending ACT/SAT SCORES

College Application ProcessStep #4:

Letters of Recommendation

- Most colleges and universities do NOT require counselor or teacher letters of recommendation.

- Please note that a recommendation is different than the “school official” portion of the application.

22

Counselor Letter of Recommendation

- Counselors are able to write letters of recommendation when required by the college (Most non-Common App colleges do not require one)- For Common App schools, students are required to

electronically invite their counselor to complete the recommendation.

- If you are applying to a college that requires a recommendation (Common App Colleges), students must complete a Student Brag sheet (available on the counseling website). Provide ample time, with a minimum 3 weeks prior to the application deadline date. Parent Brag sheet is optional.

- Counselors will write the recommendation and send it to the college(s) by the posted application deadline date.

23

Teacher Letter of Recommendation- Consult with a teacher for a letter of recommendation only if the college requires one. - Colleges who use the Common Application require at least

one Teacher Recommendation. When requesting a letter of rec, consider consulting with an academic teacher who knows you well. When you fill out the Common App online, you need to electronically invite the teacher electronically who has accepted the request to fill out the recommendation online.

- Please give teachers a 3-4 week notice when asking them to write a letter of recommendation.

- If you are applying with a paper application, give the teacher an addressed, stamped envelope and have him/her send the letter of recommendation directly to the college (s), through the mail.

- * Remember to write a thank you note to the teacher24

IMPORTANT

Last day to submit requests for school reports before the holiday break is Friday, December 2 in order to allow adequate time to process the request.

Dear ,The Admissions Committee has completed its review of final

high school transcripts for all admitted students. Your transcript showed a downward trend in grades since the time of your admission. We are concerned about this decline and have changed your admission status to academic probation.

We believe that you can be academically successful at WMU with hard work and the help of faculty and staff. It is important that you work closely with your academic advisor, who has been notified of our decision, to ensure success at the University. To remain in good standing at the University, you must have at least

a 2.0 overall grade point average at the end of your first two enrollment periods as outlined on the enclosed Academic

Standards Policy.Be assured that this change in your admission status has no

impact on your class registration for fall 2017 or your intended major. If you have questions, we encourage you to contact our

office or your academic advisor. We wish you success in your first year at WMU.

Sincerely,WMU

SummaryTHE BIG 4: APPLICATIONS, TRANSCRIPTS, TEST SCORES

AND RECOMMENDATIONSApplications

Submit online and avoid the paper and pencil option whenever possible Nearly all colleges and universities request applications to be submitted online. If

the college you are applying to is one of the few still using paper and pencil, check and see if there is a Counselor or School Official portion of the application. If there is a paper portion your counselor needs to sign or complete, do NOT submit this portion to your counselor but first submit it to the Counseling Secretary.

Transcripts All college applications require a high school transcript.

Northville’s transcript request process is electronic and done through Parchment. Students must request their transcripts electronically. Counselors are not involved in this process. Students must make certain they are requesting the proper destination on Parchment: Common App, specific college if not using Common App, NCAA, etc. http://www.parchment.com/

Please note that once your student has committed to a college, a final transcript must be requested through Parchment after graduation, in early June.

39

Test Scores

- If your college or university requires an official standardized test score with their application, students must request their test scores to be sent directly to the college or university from ACT or SAT. Directions to have your scores sent are on the website of ACT ad SAT. If the scores are sent from NHS, the scores will be considered unofficial.

Recommendations

- Most colleges and universities do NOT require counselor or teacher letters of recommendation. Please note that a recommendation is different than the “school official” portion of the application. If your college or university does require Counselor and/or Teacher recommendations, please keep the following in mind:

- NHS requests that Brag Sheets be submitted to the recommending Counselor a minimum of 10 working days before the application due date. It is suggested to allow for 20 working days if you need a teacher recommendation.

Brag Sheets are different for Counselors and Teachers. Parent Brag Sheets are not required for Counselor recommendations but are encouraged as they aid in the writing process. Click on the links below for the Brag Sheets that are also located on the NHS Counseling Website:
