FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

“Blessed are those whose strength is in you [Lord], who have settheir hearts on pilgrimage. They go on from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.” - Psalm 84:5,7

Northview United Methodist Church is STRONG! Ourchurch family is made up of a multitude of unique individuals withpersonal strengths and passions. Our ongoing ministries are

effective and meaningful because they arebuilt on the strengths and commitment ofgodly women and men. As the psalmistproclaims, “our strength is in God.” Godhas gifted each of us with some ability thatwe thoroughly love using. When thatspecial, God-inspired gift is used in ministry

to others, everyone benefits from that strength. As we begin a fourth year together – pastor and church

family – let us consider three things that Psalm 84:5,7 teachesabout being strong.

1. Find Your Strength In God –What did God create you to dowell?I am a strong “connector.” I love connecting things – people, resources, dreams, etc. I especially like to connect one person’sstrength with another person’s need. Some people say I am a“hopeless romantic”- a born “matchmaker.” It’s what I do well. Of course, my strength is wasted when I isolate myself frompeople. I have to make a commitment to live in a community offaith in order for my strength to be effective for “the commongood.”

•What is your greatest strength?•Do you believe your strength is meant for “the commongood” of the community of faith?•Are you committed to living in a community of faith?

2. Set Your Heart On Pilgrimage –Where is your heart leadingyou?I want to get to heaven so bad it hurts. Nothing on earth makes my

heart skip a beat like that “land ofendless day.” I don’t know how long itwill take to get there but I know I’m notgoing to stop until I do. And along theway I am joined by some very uniquepeople. Each of us has a strength thathelps our company of pilgrimsovercome an obstacle along the way. We stop often to lend a helping handand to celebrate life. It’s not an easyjourney but I’m never alone.

•What is your heart’s greatestdesire?•Are you willing to offer yourstrength and courage to yourfellow ‘pilgrim?”•Do you know that God is withyou on the journey?

3. Journey From Strength ToStrength –What is your next“strength”?I have other strengths that come inhandy in this faith journey. I have agreat “sense of direction” and myhearing is quite amazing. I am learningmany new things from the many peoplein my life. My life is richer andstronger because others have taught metheir strengths and encouraged me tomove beyond my own strength. I amalways learning and growing andloving. What a way to live!

•What are your other strengths?•Are you developing newstrengths from the communityof faith? We were created for eternal

fellowship with God. Our hearts arealways longing for a heavenly home. God has given His children certainstrengths for completing the pilgrimage. Our combined strengths andcommitment enable everyone tosucceed. This is the day that God hasmade [for the journey] …. Let usrejoice [in our strengths] and be glad[God is with us].

Blessings, Pastor Joe

It’s in our weirdness that God’s perfection exists. What ifwho you are right now is exactly who God meant for you tobe? What if the weirdest, most annoying things about youexist on purpose—for a purpose—to bring life, joy, strength, and healing to this world? Author and certifiedlife coach Laurie Wallin wants us to stop fighting ourselvesand start following God.

SOCIAL CLUB NEWSSince the beginning of Northview's Social Club, the

majority of members have been residents at Hollins Manor. Sothere was a great deal of concern when it was learned that thefacility was closing in May. The residents were given options as towhere they would move, and we wondered about the impact on ourprogram. Fortunately, most of the members chose to go to NorthRoanoke Assisted Living which is nearby and where there werealready a couple of residents in Social Club. There was only a lossof 2 members in the move. During this time, Northview receivedthe following note from Ruckersville, VA:

“To whom it may concern,....I'm writing to thank you and your church for

reaching out into the community and doing for others. Our grandson was living at Hollins Manor until two

weeks ago. He is now at North Roanoke. Your churchwould come by and pick them up about once a month anddo an activity with some of them.

You made (him) so happy! He would call us andtell us all about his outing!

May God richly bless you and your church! Youhave made a difference in your community!

Again, thank you so much!”

Happily, because he moved to NorthRoanoke, the grandson is still a part of SocialClub.

On a Thursday evening inMay the members and volunteersmade the trip across town to theHoliday Inn Tanglewood for theAnnual All Social Clubs Dance, sponsored bythe Down Syndrome Association of Roanoke.

The theme was a Hawaiian Luau and the members danced to themusic of a DJ while donning leis and flowers. Those who were notdancers enjoyed watching the others “get down”. There was lots of

good food and a King and Queen of the dance werecrowned (be sure to check out the pictures on the hallbulletin board).

The plans for the regular June meeting were for

Pizza and Putt-Putt. However, as itsometimes happens, there was a changein plans. After their daughter Erica'swedding reception, the Bakers hadwonderful leftovers, and they donatedall that good food for lunch! SueSpangler and Dave and GlennaAnderson brought salad fixin's andMartha Sells, Amy Lyon, GaynelleShay and Helen Watson provided cakeand ice cream.

Our plates runneth over!Just as lunch was over, the rains

came! So Putt-Putt was postponed foranother time. Pastor Joe agreed to playthe piano and entertain the troops whilevolunteers went to the FLC and got outthe games which had been made anddonated by the Boy Scouts. Some folks opted to stay with Joe andenjoy the music while others playedCorn Hole and the Ladder Game. It'seasy to understand why one of the mainrequirements for mission work isflexibility!

In July, it's lunch (maybe thepizza we didn't have in June) andshopping at Dollar Tree – rain or shine!

NORTHVIEW'S YOUTH GROUPAND MISSION TRIP 2014

So much has been happeningand we wanted to take this opportunityto catch everyone up. We have a verysmall active youth group at this time(usually two from our church and twoof their friends) and we welcome otheryouth (ages 12-18)to join us. This yearwe discovered thatHuntington CourtUnited Methodistalso has a smallgroup. Our twogroups, along withthe parents, met toplan joint youth group activities for

2014. Our goal is to work together to provide greater opportunitiesfor the youth to learn, serve, worship and have fun. We haveparticipated in the following activities (not all inclusive): made

beds/served food at theRescue Mission, participatedin a Roanoke District Youthcommunity activity, preparedand delivered bagged lunchesto people in need inDowntown Roanoke, gamenights, a day at CarowindsAmusement Park, dinners and

discussion topics and most recently a trip to Loch Haven Lake toswim, canoe, fish and cook out.

Our next activity will be our Youth Mission trip (July 9 -12) to West Virginia to work with Hands of Hope. Several yearsago, our youth group served with Hands of Hope where theyprepared facilities for future volunteers, prepared and deliveredbagged lunches to children that would not otherwise receive ameal, sorted many household items and clothing provided byNorthview, along with providing many other services. It was trulya mission for God and we were able to see how He works throughour hands. This year we will serve by providing a Vacation BibleSchool (VBS) for the children in this impoverished area and wewill get the opportunity to see the impact this has on the presentyouth group members. I know they will also see God workingthrough their hands. While registration for this trip is alreadyclosed, there will be numerous opportunities for youth toparticipate in future youth group activities. So we invite them andtheir friends to join us in these future activities.

Can you please provide words ofencouragement? There will be paper anda box located on the table outside of thechurch office if you would please take amoment to write a few words of encouragement for our youth. Wewill share these with the youth group during our trip. We thoughtthis would be a great way for them to see the love and support ofthe church family. Also, we would like to ask for your prayers fora safe trip and blessings for the youth and those they serve. Mayall embrace the love of God and see all that is possible when weallow Him to work through us!

PEACE PRAYER FOR IRAQIn 2004, I was introduced to a

“peace pin prayer” distributed byEpiscopal Divinity School inCambridge, MA. Many people haveasked about the light blue pin I wear. I

made a commitment to pray for peace in Iraq and safety for ourservice men and women. Each pin has the name of a child andhis/her age in 2004. I do not know if the child represented by mypin – Qasim 12 – is safe or even still alive. If my prayers havebeen answered, then Qasim is now 22 years old. Where is he now? What is he doing? What is his future? In the last ten yearsthousands of US military have been killed or crippled by the warswaging in Iraq and Afghanistan. Here is my peace prayer:

Oh God, in your great mercy protect this child from allharm. Grant to children everywhere the blessings of peacenow and forever more. Guide and protect our military as theydefend others. Grant them the blessing of peace now andforever more. Amen. Humbly and Hopefully, Pastor Joe

Dear Northview Members,We want to thank you for your cards, emails, your thoughts and prayers during the time of my Mother's,

(Eva Nell Townsend) recent illness and passing. While she didn't know most of you, she knew you as mychurch family and that meant a lot to her.

She and my Dad were married just over 63 years, as one of her three daughters, and I can only say, sheset the example for me through her faith, her dedication and her strength.

To Pastor Joe, your visits were very important to my Mom. During one of your visits, my Momfollowed your prayer with one of her own. She could barely speak with that oxygen tube, her severely sorethroat, etc. but when we heard your prayer and then her own prayer, we knew we were a blessed family.Thank you, The Townsend Family-Tom, Pam (Thomas), Patsy (Hosner) and Steven Thomas

Dear Pastor Joe & Northview Members,Thank you so much for the prayers, calls and gift card

during my recovery. It is so nice to have such a loving church family. Deborah Ginger

STAR SPANGLED BANNERO say can you see by the dawn's early light,

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCEI pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands. One

nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE CHRISTIAN FLAGI pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified,

risen, and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe.
