northshore’s Best Voting each year, is to feel

the thriving pulse of the northshore com-

munity. this is the place where people know

what it means to make every day count

and they are fiercely loyal to the businesses

that help them do it. thank you to all of our

readers for such an overwhelming response.

Read on for the results to see if your favorites

made the cut.

Restaurants—We love to eat! Who doesn’t know that? Our restau-

rants category had the most votes and some close races, especially

for Best new Restaurant. congratulations to our winner in this one,

407 north. Other new restaurants with a growing fan base include

carmelo Ristorante in mandeville, gallagher’s grill in covington

and Jerk’s island grill also in covington, proving that northshore

residents like to mix it up when they dine out. it seems that the

northshore is still in the honeymoon phase with Bistro Byronz.

Opened in the summer of 2009, this neighborhood restaurant gave

our first place winner some stiff competition.

Nightlife—Voting shows that our nightlife is alive and well. the

columbia street tap room dominated this category, taking three of

the 10, including Best Overall. When people want to cut the rug, the

voters chose the northshore icon, Ruby’s Roadhouse.

Shopping—most anything you want can be found right here, on

the northshore. from slidell to hammond, even the most serious

shoppers can be appeased. it is no wonder that one category had

three winners. congratulations to Rapture, home & garden and

gordon’s of mandeville for the tie win in the home Décor category.

Sports and Leisure—With so many different ways to relax, voters

made their voices heard loudly and clearly in the sports and Leisure

category. from fitness to frolicking, voters chose the serenity of the

lakefront as their favorite place to run, and Bogue falaya Park as

their favorite picnic spot.

People—Of course people make the place, and we have some out-

standing professional people in this community. Local stars like chef

John Besh, artist elizabeth Brown and sports anchor Jim henderson

held onto their titles in their respective categories, while local sus-

pense writer and best-selling author, erica spindler prevailed in the

favorite author category.

Services—many people move to the northshore to give their chil-

dren one of the best educations in the state. teachers like mandeville

high’s Victor noto, are the lifeblood of this essential service. this

science teacher was the clear favorite in Best teacher/name of

school category.

Arts and Entertainment—northshore residents have a great

appreciation for the arts. in this category, the Krewe of Orpheus

toppled last year’s winner as best area parade, while voters essen-

tially stayed loyal to last year’s favorites in every other area.

Voters seem to love some of their quirky favorites like the Best

hole in the Wall in the restaurant category. Bears in covington was

the fan favorite here, but Liz’s Where Y’at, Louie and the Redhead

Lady and an old favorite—coffee’s Boiling Point—clearly made their

mark. for Bang for the Buck, it seems the times grill delivers. What

about the best place to buy hardware? Yes, we asked. hJ smith &

sons general store in covington won hands down. When it comes to

voter’s favorite physician, Dr. shaun carpenter is know for his great

bedside manner. thank you to all of our voters for taking the time

to make your voices heard. We appreciate your participation and the

winners appreciate your loyal support.
