and hot dogs at the Bennington Firehouse at 160 River Street from 11 a.m. to 2 pm.

At 4 p.m., the firehouse hosts its annual Chicken Barbecue Dinner. Although 500 dinners are prepared at a cost of $10 per dinner, the din-ner sells out every year, so it is recommended that people get there early. In conjunction with the dinner, the fire department will also host a Chinese auction in the truck bay, where attendees can bid on gift certificates from local businesses that range from jewelry stores to kids’ toys.

A classic car cruise-in will take place at the fire house from 6 to 8 p.m., and at 8:15 p.m., the cars will parade down Main Street.

The Bennington Fire House will be the host of a Las Vegas Night from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, with music by DJ Ben Patten and games of chance such as Texas Hold ‘em and Blackjack open to the public.

Saturday’s events open at 7:30 a.m. with regis-tration for the Vermont State Firefighters Conference, and starting at 8 a.m., there will be a vendor display of new fire apparatus at the fire house. At 8:30 a.m., there will be a memorial ser-vice honoring fallen firefighters at the station.

Meanwhile, at the Bennington Monument, reg-istration starts at 8 a.m. for the Battle Day 5K Road Race, which starts at 9:30 a.m. with the sound of cannon fire. A half mile kids “Fun Race” will follow the 5K, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Monument.

From 10 a.m. to noon, the Bennington Fire Department hosts “Kids’ Day” at the Recreation Center on Gage Street. It’s an assortment of

active games such as climbing a greased pole and a huge slip ‘n slide for the younger set. Prizes will be awarded to the winners, and there will be some new games, this year, said Knapp..

At noon, area fire departments will compete in a series of Firematic Games at the firehouse. Traditional timed “muster” games such as “Midnight Alarm” and “Bucket Brigade” will challenge the teams.

The weekend wraps up on Sunday, August 19 with the Bennington Battle Day Parade at 12:30 p.m. This is the 48th year that the Bennington Fire Department is presenting the parade, which steps off on Main Street in front of the old middle school. The parade route continues down Main to Depot Street, then over to the intersection of Depot and River Streets, where it takes a left turn and ends at the firehouse.

In addition to the 13 marching bands, there will also be local rock bands on floats, Boy Scouts, baton twirlers, country cloggers, clowns, and more. Parade trophies will be presented at 4 p.m. Also at 4 p.m., the winner of the $5,000 cash prize raffle will be announced. Tickets can be pur-chased at the firehouse.

The Battle of Bennington took place along the Walloomsac River on August 16, 1777, when Colonel Seth Warner and 350 Green Mountain Boys helped defeat the British forces that came to Bennington to capture an American supply depot. With the British unable to get their needed sup-plies, their forces were weakened.

This battle is credited by many historians as the first victory for the United States in the Revolutionary War, and it set the stage for the Americans’ victory at Saratoga. The Bennington Monument now stands on the site of the supply depot.

The magnificent sounds of opera will fill the air at Equinox Terrace Assisted Living at 2 p.m. on August 14, when Hubbard Hall Opera Theatre performs selections from Mozart’s “Magic Flute” and key scenes from Sullivan’s “Cox and Box”.

The graduate and under-graduate level students are studying with the Hubbard Hall Opera Theatre in Cambridge, NY, as part of a summer fellow-ship program. This event is free and open to the public.

“We know this talented group of students will provide delightful sounds and a memo-rable performance for our resi-dents, their families, and the community,” said Ann Bouza, executive director at Equinox Terrace Assisted Living. “Many of our residents cannot go to the opera, so we are bringing it to them. We are thrilled to enhance the lives of our resi-dents by making this event pos-sible.”

The Hubbard Hall Conservatory fellowship pro-gram is highly competitive, as the students audition to take part in the program. They take classes, workshops, sing sup-porting roles in the mainstage orchestra production, and act

as understudies for leading roles.

“The students are looking forward to the performance at Equinox Terrace Assisted Living,” said Alix Jones, artis-tic director for the Hubbard

Hall Opera Theater. “It is a truly inviting environment and the community always makes us feel welcome. The last time we performed there, the resi-dents and the public had knowl-edge of classical music, and they were very supportive.”

While final figures are still being tallied, to date, the 2012 Komen Vermont Race for the Cure on July 28 drew 1,587 par-ticipants and brought in $185,046, organizers reported.

“It was a very good day, all things considered,” said Debbie Peretz, Ver mont-New Hampshire Affiliate president. “Our numbers were down but the energy level was up, and the folks on the field – participants,

volunteers, survivors, every-body – really put their heart and souls into the race. Good things will come from this, and hopefully, we’ll see our num-bers start to turn around next year.”

Peretz noted that since pledg-es are being accepted through September 1, the dollar amount raised so far is expected to rise.

Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning will pres-ent “The British Monarchy since Victoria: Politics, Money and Public Image,” by Professor Paul Monod of Middlebury College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14 at Burr and Burton’s Hunter Seminar Room in Manchester.

The British royal family has been a constant source of fasci-

nation for Americans, but few understand its history and development. This lecture will address topics such as the mon-archy’s constitutional role, how it has changed from the 1830s to the present, and where its money comes from.

Paul Monod is Barton Hepburn Professor of History at Middlebury College, where he has taught since 1984. A spe-

cialist in British and European history, he earned his doctorate from Yale and has published four books. His new book, “King Solomon’s Arts: The Occult in the British Enlightenment, 1660-1800,” will appear next year. Monod is also past presi-dent of the New England Historical Association.

Registration for the lecture is $20. To register, visit www.greenmtnacademy.org or call Veronica VanDerMark at 802-768-8525.

GMALL presents British lecture

How to start the conversa-tion with a loved one regard-ing end-of-life options will be discussed at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 23 as RAVNAH pres-ents a program on this issue and the components of a care plan. The program will take place at Israel Congregation of Manchester.

“We prepare for everything in life – from birth, children and marriage to education, careers and retirement – but we seldom talk about prepar-ing for the end,” said program

organizer Doris Bass. RAVNAH believes that talking is the most important thing we can do to prepare for the death of a loved one. While difficult, talk-ing makes it more likely to have a rich ending.

Anyone dealing with end-of-life issues is encouraged to attend. Israel Congregation is located at 6025 Main Street (Route 7A) in Manchester. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call Doris at 802-297-0167.

Program on End of Life options

Children of all ages are invit-ed to put on their PJs, grab their favorite stuffed animal, and head to the Mark Skinner Library for a Pajama Party Story Time at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15.

While the kids will go home for the night, their stuffed ani-mals can have a sleepover at the library. Children can pick them up at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 16 at the Summer Reading Program Celebration, where they will receive photos of their pal’s night at the library, and enjoy refreshments and music by the Emerald Valley Recorder Ensemble. Thursday will also be the last opportunity

to take a chance on the fabulous Children’s and Teens’ baskets.

Both programs are free and open to the public.

In other Mark Skinner Library news, the library’s StoryWalk at the Manchester Rec Park has been extended to September 27, with two new sto-ries to be put up on August 22. Visitors are asked to write their comments at the end of the Walk.

The Mark Skinner Library is located at 48 West Road in Manchester. For more informa-tion about any of the library’s programs, call 362-2607 or visit www.markskinnerlibrary.org.

The Dorset Theatre Festival’s presentation of Michael Cristofer’s world premiere play “The Whore and Mr. Moore” starring Judd Hirsch concludes on Saturday, August 11.

Described as a comedic ver-sion of “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir,” the play also features actors Janet Zarish and Betsy Aidem.

Hirsch is well known to audi-ences for his long career that has spanned theatre, TV and film. He is best known for his Emmy Award-winning perfor-mance as Alex Rieger on “Taxi,” and currently stars in the award winning series “Damages” with Glenn Close.

Janet Zarish has performed on and off Broadway, appearing in the New York productions of “Other People’s Money” at the Minetta Lane Theater, and “Miss Julie” and “An Enemy of

the People” at the Roundabout Theater.

Rounding out the cast is New York actress Betsy Aidem, whose career includes New York productions of “Metal Children” at The Vineyard Theatre and “A Lie of the Mind” at the Promenade.

Playwright Michael Cristofer won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony for his Broadway pro-duction of “The Shadow Box.” He is also known for his screen-plays of “The Witches of east-wick and “The Bonfire of the Vanities,” among others. He currently can be seen on the Theresa Rebeck hit NBC series “Smash,” playing Anjelica Huston’s husband.

Tickets are available by call-ing the box office at 802-867-2223 or by visiting www.dorsetthe-atrefestival.org.
