MISSION Northmount School is an independent boys’ preparatory

school (JK-8) grounded in the Catholic tradition. It helps

students achieve their greatest academic potential in a

supportive environment which emphasizes character

development, values and service, leading to a meaningful,

balanced and fulfilling life.HEADMASTER’S WELCOME The world’s next generation will need leadership from responsible individuals who are morally sound and whose values speak to the Truth. For boys who aspire to have character when men, the journey begins at Northmount.

Our school community finds its foundations in the teaching of the Catholic Church. Families of all faiths, however, are welcome as we see our school as a microcosm of society. We teach from a Catholic perspective and this informs how we teach, understand right from wrong, and guide our boys to manhood.

The family plays an important role in Northmount’s vision for education. As the primary educators in their children’s lives, parents are active in the academic, co-curricular and faith development of their boys and in helping them to develop character. The school seeks out opportunities to engage with the family to round out the experiences in a young boy’s life.

Our academic program is one of which our school community is extremely proud, and our dedicated teachers ascribe to pedagogy that focuses on the needs of boys using contemporary tools. As a single-sex school and with significant research to back this focus, Northmount ensures that boys develop the necessary academic skills to find success in high school and beyond.

Life at Northmount is further enriched by our dedicated faculty through a strong co-curriculum program. Boys learn as much outside of the classroom as they do while in it, and hence Northmount has strong offerings in the Arts, athletics and club environs after school.

We at Northmount are committed to helping each boy find excellence in all facets of his life. Working with families, we aspire to develop the leaders of tomorrow who are faith-filled, know right from wrong and recognize the need to help one’s neighbour as well as himself.

We would love to have the opportunity to host your family for a visit. Please feel free to drop in and understand the “Northmount Way” during your search to find the right school for your son.

Sincerely,

Dr. Terrence M. Sheridan

Northmount is more than a school

PHILOSOPHYNorthmount School provides a sound, stimulating and coherent education to prepare boys in their development as responsible citizens. The School helps each student to reach his full potential, to develop critical thinking skills, self-discipline, a respect for others, and a strong moral character. We recognize that parents are the boys’ first teachers and thus we enter into a partnership between parents, students and the School to establish a rich and vibrant community life.

We deeply respect and are guided by our tradition, its spirituality, appeal to the common good, and its values. We are multi-cultural and our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our Catholic roots encourage a belief in the dignity of every person and a respect for a variety of faith traditions.

Our boys learn to support one another in a nurturing environment. We have a superior and highly committed staff dedicated to implementing our goals.

SMALL BY DESIGNAs a small family school, Northmount School for Boys boasts a tightly knit community. Our boys perform better academically and take greater responsibility for each other because of our small class sizes. Some of the important factors contributing to the success of Northmount are:

* Small classes mean higher expectations for students and improved standardized test performance

* More individualized instruction and effective use of specialized provisions for students

* Higher student morale with more opportunities for leadership and participation in school life

* Higher teacher engagement and greater level of co-operation among staff

* Its ability to serve as a community nucleus, enabling greater levels of involvement for students, staff, parents, and the wider community

ENRICHED INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTIONAt Northmount School for Boys, the key to mastery of fundamental skills stems from the ability to tailor the curriculum so that it is personally relevant and engaging. This is achieved through:

* Recognizing that students come to Northmount with different backgrounds and as such our individualized instruction allows each boy to achieve their greatest potential

* A kindergarten curriculum in which our students are taught to read, write, and do mathematics at a grade 1 level

* Focusing on systemic phonics at the primary level designed specifically to teach and encourage young boys to read

* Accelerating math and science courses each year

* Pairing specialty teachers with small class sizes in each grade level which allows for increased personal instruction

* Establishing the same learning goals for all students and providing support through our CASTLE Program to accommodate different learning styles

CATHOLIC FORMATIONThe school offers a Chaplaincy Program that is faithful to the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church. We welcome families from all faith backgrounds who are seeking a moral and values-based curriculum. Students are taught to integrate their faith into their everyday lives. The Chaplaincy Program supports and encourages the boys to live a life of prayer as well as one that is sacramentally sound. To support the faith development of our boys, the Chaplaincy Program includes the following:

HOLY MASS: Offered twice weekly by various diocesan and religious priests

ALTAR SERVING: Students from grades 4-8 volunteer to serve at the altar during Mass

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Offered twice weekly on Mass days

PRAYER: Morning prayer at school assemblies, Angelus at mid-day, as well as the Rosary and other devotional prayers throughout the year

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION AND BENEDICTION: Advent and Lent

COMMUNITY SERVICEAt Northmount School for Boys the spirit of service is central to the education of a young man. Becoming a leader does not happen by chance or natural ability alone. Northmount fosters programs, both internal and external to the school, that require our young men to pause and to act on issues. This requires of them a true sense of active generosity within our own community and beyond our walls.

Northmount graduates are recognized not only for their academic success, but more importantly as young men with sound moral compasses and a true caring for the world in which they live. This comes to fruition for a graduate when he is able to not only look after himself, but after others as well.

STUDENT LEADERSHIPDue to its selective small size, Northmount School for Boys affords students a great deal of opportunity for initiatives that deal with leadership, mentorship, and cross-grade interaction. From kindergarten to grade 8, each boy is called to be a leader and a mentor. Examples of leadership opportunities are:

CHARACTER EDUCATION PROGRAMOur Character Education Program is centred on our philosophy that character development is a shared

mission between parents and educators. It begins in kindergarten, where boys learn the importance of

virtues and are encouraged to develop good habits, which provide the foundation for academic and

personal success. Good character is not formed automatically; it is developed over time through a sus-

tained process of teaching, example, learning, and practice. Character development is a hallmark of a

Northmount education and comes to fruition through intentional, proactive and comprehensive efforts as

seen through the following:

* Living the shared mission with parents to develop well-rounded young men

* Fostering academic excellence rooted in strength of character that is guided by a commitment to unchanging truths

* One–to–one advisory program guiding academic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth

* Recognizing one’s own privileges and the duty to be compassionate and of service to others
