Caribbean!Bananas!!

6!bananas!¼!teaspoon!each!cinnamon!&!nutmeg!

¼!cup!brown!sugar!¼!cup!sherry!

½!cup!orange!juice!30g!(1!oz)!butter!

grated!rind!of!one!orange!!

Peel!bananas,!place!in!flat!buttered!baking!dish.!!Combine!brown!sugar!with!orange!juice,!rind,!spices!and!sherry.!!

Pour!over!bananas.!Dot!with!butter.!!Bake!15`20!minutes.!

Does anyone have any information or pictures relating to Yuen Place in Darwin? It is a road, now partly closed, and apparently there is a rather large rock at the site - information is sought as to whether this may have any significance. There is no heritage listing for the site. The Place Names Committee records the following information: Named after Yuen Yet Hing (better known as Yuen Yet Leong) who arrived in Darwin in 1886 and died in Darwin in 1916. He owned land in Cavenagh Street and traded under the name Yet Leong and Company. If you know anything about this rock or the site in general the Trust would be pleased to hear from you . Trevor Horman AM

In the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, our National President Trevor Horman was recognised and became a Member of the Order of Australia. The citation mentioned significant service to the North Territory, particularly through heritage preservation, motor racing and the engineering profession. Trevor said that he was humbled to receive such a prestigious award as he has thoroughly enjoyed the roles that he has played over the years. In fact he was surprised at some of the revelations in the citation, which had been thoroughly researched by those who compiled the nomination. Trevor hopes that some of the coverage of the award will help to lift the profile of heritage in our community. He said that any achievements that he might have accomplished over the years were only possible with the assistance of volunteers who had contributed thousands of selfless hours to Territory projects. Apart from Trevor’s work with the National Trust, he has had a longstanding interest in Engineering Heritage, which has included significant research and interpretive work on the Overland Telegraph and the North Australia Railway. He is presently on the Board of Engineering Heritage Australia and the Association of Tourist and Heritage Railways of Australia in addition to the Board of the Australian Council of National Trust. He is a member of the John McDouall Stuart Society, and in 2012 arranged for commemorative cairns to be erected on the Mary River to commemorate Stuart’s passage along the river 150 years ago in 1862. In his professional life, Trevor is an electrical engineer with the Power and Water Corporation where he has served in a number of senior roles. Presently, he is involved with a number of renewable energy and sustainability projects. Trevor has served on the Management Committees of Engineers Australia and the Association of Professional Engineers for many years. Trevor sees that the National Trust has a proud history of caring for the built heritage of the Northern Territory and particularly enjoys visiting Trust properties across the Northern Territory, and especially remote locations like Timber Creek, Pine Creek, Newcastle Waters and Borroloola, etc. Not only does he enjoy the properties, but he is the ‘rolling up the sleeves and making a positive contribution’ type of person. The Larrakeyah Branch of the National Trust congratulates Trevor on receiving this well deserved award. !!

!Repairs'at'Burnett'House'

! !!!!!Nigel!repairing!windows!at!Burnett!House!

In!recent!times!we!found!that!Burnett!House!has!needed!a!bit!of!maintenance.!Until!last!November!both!Burnett!and!Mines!Houses!belonged!to!the!Commonwealth!and!they!have!since!been!handed!over!to!the!care!of!the!National!Trust.!We!have!found!wood!rot!and!a!few!others!things!needing!remedial!work.!!!Amiable!Nigel!Bowden!is!repairing!all!our!wood!rot,!renewing!the!putty!on!windows!and!generally!ensuring!that!our!House!is!going!to!last!for!many!years!to!come.!!!!Larrakeyah!Branch!earns!the!money!for!these!repairs!by!their!fundraising!efforts.!!Larrakeyah!Branch!is!also!contributing!to!the!cost!of!changing!from!a!septic!system!to!a!mains!sewerage!system.!

Junior!Rangers!Program!The!2013!Katherine!Junior!Rangers!and!the!National!Trust!in!Katherine!are!very!excited!to!be!working!together!over!the!next!few!weeks!to!try!to!identify!and!document!a!few!of!the!possibly!significant!trees!in!the!Katherine!region.!!!!The!program!for!the!Junior!Rangers!!is!focusing!this!year!on!the!reasoning!behind!significance!and!asking!the!question!`!Why!do!people!find!different!things!important?!This!attributing!of!importance!relates!directly!to!the!philosophy!of!the!protection!and!management!of!natural!and!cultural!resources!and!is!the!corner!stone!behind!the!reasoning!for!the!Junior!Ranger!program.!!Four!of!the!events!this!term!relate!directly!to!the!documenting!of!significant!trees`!the!27/7,!10/8,!7/9!and!10/9.!We!will!also!be!having!our!final!event/quiz!night!to!celebrate!the!end!of!Junior!Rangers!for!2013!in!the!beautiful!grounds!of!O’Keefe!House.!!!!!I!would!like!to!take!this!opportunity!to!thank!Gillian!Banks!for!being!such!a!fantastic!help!in!setting!this!project!up.!Her!enthusiasm!and!encouragement!has!resulted!in!a!great!partnership!between!the!Parks!and!Wildlife!Commission!and!the!National!Trust.!! ! ! !!!!!!!Clare'Pearce,'Community'Education'Officer,'Parks'and'Wildlife'Commission'of'the'NT'

!!Railway!Book!Exchange.!!The!Railway!Book!Exchange!continues!to!attract!visitors!to!our!property.!O'Keeffe!House!is!open!to!the!public!again!due!to!a!new!caretaker!family,!complete!with!kelpie!dog,!moving!their!bus!in!to!the!garden!this!weekend.!Not!only!will!the!dog!help!to!keep!intruders!away,!but!having!someone!to!water!the!garden!and!care!for!the!place!allows!the!volunteers!a!little!respite.!!!!It!has!been!a!tough!two!weeks!dealing!with!break!ins!and!police!visits,!with!irate!tourists!not!liking!the!fact!the!house!was!closed.!At!least!six!couples!turned!down!the!offer!of!a!free!powered!site!in!a!lovely!private!setting,!asking!to!be!paid!as!well.!It!makes!the!moment!doubly!sweet!to!have!a!long!weekend!off!to!recover.!Now!to!await!the!return!of!holidaying!Branch!members!and!life!returning!to!normal.!!Until!now,!it!has!been!a!good!year,!with!painting!of!the!exterior!of!both!properties!due!to!start!and!the!Ablutions!Block!at!O'Keeffe!being!restored,!along!with!many!other!maintenance!issues!being!undertaken!by!the!Branch.!!!

Pine'Creek''

The!National!Trust!Rail!Heritage!Precinct!at!Pine!Creek!is!open!to!the!public!courtesy!of!local!supporters!Rosemary!Aitken!and!Peter!Hanson.!Rosemary!has!been!successful!in!recruiting!some!assistance!for!a!few!weeks!whilst!Rosie!and!Peter!are!away.!!David!and!Caron!Sinclair!from!WA!,who!are!on!a!caravanning!holiday!in!the!NT,!agreed!to!assist!in!opening!this!historic!National!Trust!property!during!July.!!They!are!doing!a!great!job,!not!only!opening!the!Railway!Station!and!the!Railway!Employees’!House,!but!also!undertaking!grounds!maintenance,!local!networking,!and!soliciting!further!assistance.!!Due!to!efforts!of!people!such!as!these!(and!Pauline!and!Malcolm!in!2012)!we!are!starting!see!visits!by!tourist!busloads!as!part!of!their!itinerary.!!This!is!good!for!business,!but!it!makes!it!even!more!important!that!we!are!able!to!keep!the!properties!open.!!We!can!also!see!significant!improvement!in!the!condition!of!the!properties!over!the!past!two!years.!!The!Railway!Employees’!House!from!1889!desperately!needs!a!coat!of!paint!now.!!See!image!below.!This!could!be!a!good!project!for!a!Hands`on!Heritage!weekend.!If!you!would!like!more!details,!phone!Trevor!Horman!on!0417!838!578.!!!

! ! !!!!The!Gold!Rush!Festival!was!held!at!Pine!Creek!on!22!June.!!Several!of!us!attended!to!help!with!opening!the!properties!and!hosting!visitors.!The!ever`energetic!Rosemary!took!part!in!the!“Skilled”!category!of!the!gold!panning!competition.!!She!found!6!of!the!9!specs!of!gold.!!
