Rural connections throughout New Zealand

Better broadband and mobile coverage has been rolled out across the country this year as a result of investments made by Vodafone.

Thirty new cell sites have been built in the last 12 months and 27 existing cell sites have been upgraded under the Rural Broadband Initiative which Vodafone delivers in partnership with Chorus and the Government.

Vodafone has built a further 14 rural cell sites and upgraded 125 existing cell sites to 4G as part of its own investment.

Now almost 75 percent of rural New Zealanders have access to wireless broadband connections capable of delivering speeds on par with, or faster than those experienced in urban centres.

“As we’re nearing the end of the RBI build phase it is exciting to see demand for our new mobile and wireless broadband services grow month on month,” said Vodafone technology director Tony Baird.

“There are more than 700,000 Kiwis living and working in rural New Zealand and they all need access to more mobile coverage and faster broadband services — they are the powerhouse of our economy.

“It has been hugely rewarding to learn how different communities and businesses are starting to really benefit from better connectivity in rural New Zealand as a result of this investment.

“With Vodafone’s rural broadband network and new coverage innovations,

our long-term vision is to reach over 99 percent of places where Kiwis live, work and play,” said Tony.

“Earlier in the year we welcomed the Government’s 2025 target of speeds of over 50Mbps to virtually all New Zealanders — and we have the technology roadmap to deliver it.”

Vodafone will continue to deliver on its RBI contract, bringing the total number of completed RBI cell sites to 154, and upgraded cell sites to 387, ahead of contractual dates.

Upon completion of the programme, over 290,000 homes and businesses in rural New Zealand will have access to high speed wireless broadband.

Expecting tough timesMany farmers have weathered difficult conditions in 2015 and the majority see no relief coming in the year ahead according to an outlook poll by Federated Farmers, while Farmers of New Zealand sees no short-term improvement in the industry.

“Despite low interest rates and international wins such as TPP, agreement at the WTO to abolish export subsidies and the prioritisation of food production at the COP21 climate change talks that will deliver long-term benefits, 2015 will be remembered as a year of low milk prices and adverse events such as droughts and floods that have impacted farmers’ bottom lines and put New Zealand’s biggest sector under enormous pressure,” says Federated Farmers president Dr William Rolleston.

Over 1,100 members were surveyed in the run up to Christmas, with 52 percent saying they expect market conditions to stay the same. Only 29 percent predict improving conditions, with 19 percent forecasting worse times to come.

Confidence is greatest among dairy farmers, who are continuing to battle low milk prices with 41 percent of those surveyed forecasting improved market conditions compared with 29 percent overall, 19 percent for the meat and fibre industry and 17 percent among arable farmers.

“It is encouraging to see relatively higher levels of optimism among dairy farmers after what they have faced in 2015, however we need to remember the degree of optimism for improvement reflects the current market for dairy products versus sheep and beef — the latter having fared better than their dairy counterparts in the last year,” said Dr Rolleston.

“More generally this result suggests we have another tough year on the way and that’s certainly the way it’s set to start in much of the South Island where the El Nino summer is creating a drought that grows worse by the day.”

Farmers of New Zealand operations director, Bill Guest, says “we don’t have a clue when things are going to improve in the industry.

“We have had low prices for wool and beef for a long period of time in years past. This is not a short-term thing. It

doesn’t matter if you are freehold or have a big debt.

“I don’t believe things will improve until the embargo is lifted off Russia. This is having a profound effect as China are in unity with Russia. The world economies are so intertwined — you can’t have major players having embargoes against each other.

“The legal team at Farmers of New Zealand are working hard and we are managing our clients very carefully.”

Mr Guest says farming has always been unpredictable and that is just the nature of the lifestyle.

“We have had wool, meat and lamb crashes but I think this is the worst since the depression as we don’t know when we will see light at the end of the tunnel. How can you deal with things when the world is in chaos? The last two auctions for milk powder have dropped eight percent in total.

“We encourage our members at Farmers of New Zealand, to call us. We are doing our best to help those in need. If you are going through a tough time, we encourage everyone to get help, speak

to someone. Farmers of New Zealand understand the reality and are dealing with that very well.”

Their primary focus is beef finishing on the land that was purchased by John’s father Peter in 1966.

He spent many years developing the predominantly scrub covered block into a productive farm and the process of farm succession began ten years ago.

John and Sarah now own 50 per cent of the land and 100 per cent of the 850 head of cattle. They established their Owhata Simmental Stud in 2007, with the purchase of Tarawapake Simmentals from Sarah’s parents. “The philosophy behind this was that we found Simmental cross cattle to be

a highly profitable option when finishing beef and we wanted to ensure genetics that produce cattle which thrive in Northland hill country conditions were not lost.

“A common perception is that stud cattle are halter broken, farmed in small groups and are well fed often with crops and grain to help them along. This couldn’t be further from the truth at Owhata.”

The stud cattle are run alongside the commercial cattle in large mobs out in the hills with nothing but kikuyu pasture to eat all year round.

“The only difference is the stud are performance recorded and carefully inspected for docility and structural soundness. Performance recording involves tagging and weighing the calves at birth. This is for identification and determining calf size and calving ease.”

Sarah says ease is not necessarily related to calf size and the shape of the calf usually has a greater influence.

The cattle are weighed at 200, 400 and 600 days to record rates of weight gain. They are also ultrasonically scanned, so carcass qualities such as eye muscle area and fat content can be known. This data is all loaded on

to Breedplan, a programme that allows cattle to be compared with others throughout Australasia.

“Bulls used for stud duty also need to be DNA profiled so we can confirm parentage if required and a genetic database of the breed is known.

“When deciding which cattle will be retained for breeding, and which bulls will make the cut for the annual on — farm bull sale, genetic docility and structural soundness are our first criteria for selection,” said Sarah.

“Docility is a highly heritable genetic trait. In order to breed docile cattle, the parents need to be naturally docile

rather than as the result of human handling. It is important from a beef finishing perspective as relaxed cattle spend more time eating rather than burning off nervous energy.

“At the end of the day, farmers are paid per kilogram so efficient weight gain is critical. Likewise, structural soundness is often inherited and is necessary for an animal to move comfortably around the hills finding the best feed.”

The cycle of beef finishing begins in September with calving. They calve a little later than many farms because they feed no supplements.

“The cows need to be calving when the spring grass is beginning to grow,” says Sarah.

“This Spring we calved 150 cows. Apart from producing a calf, the purpose of the breeding cow is that of a natural mulcher, to clean up the rough feed that nothing else wants to eat.”

There are limited places suitable for calving on the farm so the stock are spread out over all the North facing paddocks. These are quite steep, but offer excellent shelter from southerly storms.

Due to the nature of the environment, the cows need to be able to calve

unassisted, and have strong maternal instincts.

“In the Autumn, the calves are weaned and an additional 200 steer calves are purchased at the annual weaner fairs. This is an opportunity for us to purchase the progeny of bulls we have bred and sold and it is an excellent way to monitor our breeding programme.”

These young stock get spread out on the coastal hills to grow frame. When they are close to maturity they get shifted up on the 120 hectare plateau at 1000 feet altitude and are shifted onto fresh pasture every second day to maximise weight gain.

All the Owhata cattle are destined for the export market. John and Sarah were Silver Fern Farms Northland Prime Beef supplier of the year in 2015 and in 2010 they were finalists in the annual Steak of Origin competition.

While the farm keeps them busy, John still manages to referee rugby during the Winter and Sarah works part time teaching at Abundant Life School in Kaitaia, and squeezes in some dressage training with her horse, is chairperson of Simmental NZ, and serves on various committees associated with the children’s activities.

The farm of Brian and Gaye Simms is located a few kilometres south of Kaitaia

and is 111 hectares in total of which 70 hectares are pasture, 18 hectares of pine forest, � ve hectares

of alternative species forest, 16 hectares of mature and regenerating native bush and two hectares of roads and streambeds.

Brian left school in 1962 and started milking on the farm in 1965. He purchased the property

five years later off his parents who had owned it since 1955. The family land has since been developed extensively as it was very rough and was 95 per cent bracken fern and tea tree coverage.

“We dairy farmed for 45 years and changed to beef in 2010,” said Brian. My parents started me off with 35 dairy cows and gradually increased the numbers up to 112. I had a lot of family help at the beginning of taking over the farm.”

They run up to 160 steers brought in at about one-year-old.

“I have always kept Kikuyu grass out of the farm, it is very rare to not have this growing. I look upon it as a difficult grass to manage on country like mine which is very steep and rugged and

the soil can get quite wet in winter and Kikuyu makes it even wetter. The tree planting was started to stop erosion as the land was prone to slipping due to the big rains.

“I thought if I was going to plant a tree, I may as well plant something that has potential timber value as well, and have combined several reasons including trying to make the place look nice.

“Trees are obviously also good shelter for the animals from the wind and sun. They absorb and store large amounts of carbon dioxide and give off oxygen and improve water quality in streams.

“They are a good food source and habitat for birds, bees and many other creatures. We have wood pigeon, kiwi, tui, fantails and other birds enjoying the trees.

“Many have been planted to prevent slips and stabilise gradual slippage. Personally I think I have succeeded and it is all positive.

“I have planted where I think it is appropriate, giving the best land use.

“In some places on the property, pasture is the best and on others, trees are better. I absolutely recommend

other farmers do this. Trees are great for shelter or retiring land that is uneconomic for pasture farming. My first recommendation would be to do your homework and find out how to do it, rather than just march in lacking knowledge.”

The majority of the species grown is pine but Brian’s main interest is the Australian blackwood, silky oak, and several varieties of eucalyptus. There are a few experimental plantings of potential trees such as Mexican ash and some of the lesser known eucalypts. Japanese cedar, poplars and willows are also grown.

“I do all the silviculture work on them, pruning, thinning and planting and I find it a very enjoyable occupation. Just

planting a little seedling and watching it grow quite fast is very satisfying. We are starting to turn some of the older ones into simple furniture as I have turned the old cowshed into a woodworking workshop. I am enjoying working with the wood.

Gaye helps a little and is busy with other activities such as volunteering with hospice and she has her own little farmlet on the farm with a few sheep, chooks, fruit trees and permaculture. She also writes for a gardening magazine.

They were the supreme winners for Northland in the Ballance Farm Environment Awards in 2010 and were the supreme winners for Northland. “The award is not just doing good things

with the environment but is having a sustainable business economically. With a maximum of 112 cows, that was tiny by today’s standard. Making as few mistakes as possible and working smartly is important, times have changed over the years.”

They also won the Water Quality Enhancement award sponsored by the Northland Regional Council.

“Working with beef and finding solutions by adding farm forestry to our property to counteract the steep terrain and erosion has been a good way to farm for us.

“We intend to stay farming as long as we can and then sell the property and move onto the next episode of life, whatever that is.”

Wishing to settle down on some land and give their children a wholesome and healthy

upbringing, the Borger’s shifted from Wellington to Paparoa 13 years ago when their first child was on the way.

“We wanted to be farming when we had children because we didn’t want Bert to be away all the time,” said Rebecca.

“My father gave up his teaching job and suggested we go chicken farming together.”

Rebecca and Bert now have five children James, Miriam, Lillian, Sarah and Andy. Rebecca has a Business Degree and a diploma in Primary School Teaching and homeschools their children whilst Bert holds a Forestry degree.

“Farming was something we always wanted to do and was always in the back of our minds. Bert grew up in Holland and his family immigrated to New Zealand when he was 12-years-old. Whilst his parents weren’t on a farm, his grandparents were.

“The area that he grew up in is actually well known for all the chicken farms there.”

The couple chose to make Paparoa their home because “up here has more of a holiday feel,” Rebecca says.

They chose to sell their eggs under the Free Range Eggs New Zealand brand. “We had known one of the FRENZ directors for a long time. The company were looking at expanding and we were

looking at going farming. We had an advisor as well so that meant even though we were a bit new to start with, we could pick it up. He was there when we needed him for advice.”

They purchased 400 acres of an old run off block on the northern side of the Kaipara. They placed their hen houses on some flat land that was once an air strip.

At first they leased out the rest of their farm so they could concentrate on the chickens but when the lease ran out they decided to run their own cattle and free range pigs.

“What was once a wasted bit of land that could not support a sheep and beef farm is now a profitable unit providing

income and employment for a few locals,” said Rebecca.

The Te Rata Family Farm eggs can be tracked on their journey from the nest to the table with a system organised by FRENZ. Each packet has a flock indicator number and can be tracked on the FRENZ website right back to the farm where they were laid.

Rebecca believes there is more of a demand by consumers wanting to feel connected to the food they buy.

“There needs to be traceability and I think that’s where things need to go further. As consumers we don’t really trust the big corporations anymore as they have abused our trust in so many ways, so traceability and accountability is brilliant.”

The farm is now moving into rearing calves and Rebecca has a number of rescued bobbies.

“What we really love is being part of the primary food production. Food is something that we all need and being able to provide a quality product where we can ensure the animals are looked after is great.”

Te Rata Family Farm have seven hen houses which are rotated around the paddocks. With homeschooling, James is able to do a lot of jobs around the farm and fit in the schooling around it.

“The children are getting a really good work ethic,” Rebecca says. “They know how to do a job well. They are focussed and are learning a lot of life skills.”

Looking after the land is important to the Borger family and it is their Christian faith that is the basis for everything they do.

“That’s our starting point. We want to be good stewards for the glory of God and that goes into all parts of our lives.”

In keeping with this they have a revegetated dam on the farm. “Now we get tui and kereru. We have flax growing and kowhai trees. It really is our patch of paradise.”

They also keep a big veggie garden and are pretty much self sufficient with meat and vegetables.

“All I buy at the shops are the grains. We milk our house cow Penny and make cheese. It is a buzz when we sit down for dinner and everything on our plate is from the farm. I don’t think that feeling ever goes away.”

Keeping you coolFollowing the recent tightening of regulations for milk standards by the Ministry of Primary Industries and Fonterra, the team of qualified engineers at Kensington Refrigeration are helping farmers keep their cool.

Kensington Refrigeration can install the Packo Ice Bank Cooling System which is an ice water system featuring a built-in ice bank, ensuring intensive milk cooling without the risk of freezing.

1 3 76 9 Pick of the cropAgritechnica in Germany is the ultimate test for any farm machine — an event which is to ag engineering what the Olympic games are to athletics.

So it’s no surprise that the top tractor award at this world-renowned trade fair is so coveted. It takes more than just a new paint job to attract the attention of the very demanding judges here — innovation and advancement are key factors in securing a victory.

This year the big, powerful Fendt Vario 1000 took home the crown, rocking the heavyweight division of tractors with 500hp or more. Some of these machines take a radical approach to design, allowing all that power to reach the ground without tearing it up, and we have seen massive twinned balloon tyres and even caterpillar treads deployed to spread the load. Of course, as a machine grows bigger to pack a larger, more potent engine, overall weight goes up, meaning it’s necessary to think hard about how that weight will ‘float’ over the soil without causing disastrous compaction.

Fendt’s Vario 1000 looks far more like a regular tractor than many others in its class. With the traditional large rear wheel and smaller front wheel design maintained, it may have double-wide axles — but it’s chat’s behind the wheel hubs which counts. First up, the tyre pressure of each wheel can be directly controlled from inside the cab, on the fly, using a computer interface screen. Any

veteran of tractor pull competition will tell you that tyre pressure is a big part of success in front of the sledge — it’s equally important out in the fields. This was enough to earn a silver medal from the Agritechnica judges for innovation, but they are a hard lot to impress. What really pushed the Vario 1000 into top spot was the way it generates its 500 horsepower, and how it delivers it to the ground. To reduce emissions and provide a high level of fuel economy, the Vario reaches peak torque — 2,400Nm in all — at just 1,100rpm. With the big mill ticking over at such low revs, all that power is diverted through an updated automatic Vario Drive transmission,

complete with independent hydrostatic drives on each axle. This acts like the smart four by four system in modern SUVs, vectoring that huge amount of torque to exactly where it’s needed.

Add in a 360 degree suite of camera to ensure safety for those working around this 14 ton beast, and you have a recipe for success. The Vario 1000 was judged machine of the year, a stunning feat for Fendt’s first entry into the 500-plus horsepower class. Innovative ideas like those deployed for the Vario 1000 will be sure to trickle down into some of the smaller, more ‘all round’ models in Fendt’s lineup as they plan their model range for the future.

Keeping carbon in the ground, not in the air

The environmental debate around intensive pastoral farming and fresh water quality is gaining momentum, and people are rapidly taking positions, with the ‘don’t blame me’ lobby seemingly gathering popularity.

Two things worth bearing in mind are, that a supply of clean fresh drinking water for both humans and animals now and into the future is non-negotiable in this country. Nothing less is acceptable — and rightly so.

Secondly, everyone wins when we finally reach that situation. No-one is ultimately disadvantaged by a sustainable environment, although in the short term some may have to change their practises, which may involve extra initial cost.

And it’s not just farming that is coming under the microscope. In our area ageing septic tanks, some of which were probably no more than an old steel container sunk in the ground, are no longer fully effective or acceptable, and the cost of alternatives is considerable.

A 30km direct pipeline to the urban treatment plant was found to be both expensive and culturally insensitive. After consultation, the communities here have agreed to take responsibility for their own waste via local treatment plants using bacterial processes — essentially sophisticated versions of the old septic tank.

When it comes to water nearly every drop of water in our lakes, rivers, and aquifers has travelled through or over the land surface. Soil is the ultimate filter, and when water is able to permeate it and steadily percolate downwards, a cleansing process takes place. And it’s carbon that has the lead role in this.

As a country we’re a net carbon emitter, which no amount of cheap carbon credits will change.

The solution, however, is simple as it’s under permanent grazed pasture that carbon is most rapidly sequestered.

Intensive pastoral farming, seen by most as the greatest emitter, is actually potentially the carbon saviour, with one proviso. The use of nitrogen fertiliser must be limited, as excess nitrogen limits the speed at which carbon stocks can be built.

At present 600,000 tonnes of urea per year are applied to our pastures, with conservatively 500,000 tonnes applied to intensive dairy land, which equates on average to 135kgN/ha. With an increasing number of farmers using less, there are obviously a significant number using more than that amount.

Farms where pasture growth has become reliant on regular applications of chemical nitrogen are also those properties that dry out more quickly with the onset of summer, have an increasing requirement for pasture renewal, and suffer from severe infestations of insect pests.

Conversely, those that use minimal amounts, and have replaced most of the energy provided by such nitrogen with alternative inputs that stimulate the speed of nutrient cycling, are finding that less feed is required by their cows to produce each kilogram of milk solids, lambs fatten more rapidly, and there is a greatly reduced requirement for animal ill-health intervention.

The transition to a long-term plentiful permanent pasture discipline, based on actively N-fixing clover and grasses by using alternative non-urea fertiliser, can be achieved amazingly rapidly, with no interim loss in production. However a commitment to doing regular observations of both pasture and animals, (not just a quick whiz by on the motorbike), is a requirement for

complete success. Some new ‘converts’ to such a system often express real trepidation during their first season, when a known fixed farm management formula is replaced by a flexible, principle based one.

However trepidation is rapidly followed by pleasure from a growing awareness of improved pasture quality. The knowledge that it is possible to enhance and influence natural systems (rather than just replace them) to achieve this, is genuinely satisfying.

Green machine leads the way

As farming becomes more of a science than ever before, higher and higher levels of technology are developed to unlock the potential of the land. It’s not just about the bottom line — this kind of smart thinking is needed to ensure a growing population can be fed with healthy, field-grown produce for years to come.

A huge part of maximising the potential of any given acreage is ensuring that whatever is planted there receives the very best start in life. This philosophy has seen the rise of no-till seed drills and the adoption of GPS powered fertiliser application technology, working hand in hand to make sure each seed is precisely placed, and comes to germination in soil tailored to its own nutrient needs. Now Canadian company Clean Seed Capital Group have taken this concept even further, with a machine called the CX6 Smart Seeder. A monster in both size and potential, the CX6 can accurately deliver six different products per seeding head, across a pair of multi-head booms. Towed behind a high horsepower tractor, this machine is made to handle the wide open plains of North America — but

as we have seen in recent years, the wide open plains of Canterbury have some similarities with their Canadian counterparts. Farmers are now well used to viewing a soil nutrient map on their digital device or PC. Looking at such an overlay, the field appears less like a neat grid of rows, and more like a swathe of army camouflage, with some areas needing less of certain fertilisers while others need more. Go deep — layering nutrient needs in the soil over each other for a variety of elements, and often there is little overlap between these layouts. That’s where the CX6 has the competition beat — it can literally change the mix deployed to every square foot of soil, on the fly, as it drives.

The result is uniformity of nutrient conditions on a scale undreamed of before. Seed hitting the ground in these

conditions ‘hits the ground running’, for better growth and better resistance to pests, culminating ultimately in a better crop. In the developer’s own words:

‘Clean Seed recognised that in order to be more efficient with inputs, we had to design a drill that puts down only what you want, where you want and when you want. Until now farmers have not had efficiencies where they can virtually eliminate overlap and misapplication. Farmers will see large economic gains from this new drill through overall yield gains, high

resolution site specific management, overlap elimination, improved seed handling and placement, and logistics management’.

The CX6 has already scooped up a swag of awards across North America, and while it’s a big unit for many smaller Kiwi farms to consider, it points the way to the future.

Of course, there are some who already swear by Canadian machinery on their large arable farms, so perhaps this revolution in seeding will be with us sooner than expected.

9 14Long live the new bossNot long ago, an ambitious designer at Mercedes-Benz reckoned that their huge, V8 powered G-Wagen was not insane enough. Nor did it have sufficient off-road ability, despite being utilised by oil sheikhs, gangster rappers and military organisations worldwide.

Their answer — equip the 4x4 with extra wheels, creating a 6x6 monster able to ford rivers a metre deep, tackle sand dunes and wallow through thick mud with equal ease. Six wheels proved better than four — and now the same holds true on the farm.

Polaris have enjoyed great success with their range of ATV quads, and the latest series packs in even more power and utility. One stand-out model in their range has been the Polaris Ute — taking its name from the light commercial truck, and replacing its passenger seat with a voluminous tipping tray. So far so good — and so useful for the hard working farmer. Now the carrying capacity and terrain-busting grip of the Ute and the Sportsman ATV have been expanded in the same manner as Mercedes-Benz’s G-Wagen, with the advent of the Big Boss 6x6.

What seems a simple concept is backed up by some very clever engineering beneath that wide and capacious rear tray. The ability of this versatile little vehicle to carry over 400 kilos of gear comes from a 760cc four-stroke engine, engineered to operate at a higher compression ratio than many of its competitors. This means better fuel economy despite that extra pair of wheels, which come into play off-road, engaged to deliver 50 horsepower to

the ground across six broad contact patches. Of course a six-wheeled setup also requires a re-imagined suspension system, and the Polaris engineering team have worked hard to ensure that maximum grip is achieved at all times, especially when the Big Boss is under full load. That may very well mean not just the aforementioned 400 kilos on top, but a further 600 kilos towed behind. Macpherson struts in the front and a high-rise independent setup in the rear keep the Big Boss sure-footed, even on hilly terrain. True six-wheel drive can be engaged on the fly, making this long, relatively heavy ATV feel far more

nimble than its frame suggests at a first glance. In the case of the big 6x6 Merc, an added axle may have added presence, but it has largely been put to use carrying celebrities to and from expensive hotels. The Polaris Big Boss, on the other hand, is a tool of pure utility, designed to slog through truly awful terrain while shrugging off conditions which would stop some contenders dead in their tracks. When there’s a big job to do, and a big load to carry to get it done, six wheels really can be better than four!

Six decades ahead of the packby Andy Bryenton

It’s been sixty years since Yamaha’s ‘red dragonfly’ — a 125cc copy of a post-war German DKW street bike — hit the road. In that time the Japanese company have gone from strength to strength, earning a reputation for speed, power and precision engineering on both tarmac and dirt.

Founded in the 1800s as a producer of pianos, Torakusu Yamaha’s company diversified into other areas early on, amassing engineering and metalworking knowledge.

Building finely tuned instruments crossed over nicely into building finely tuned bikes, and down the decades there have been some big wins for the company’s top names, such as the high-velocity R1 and the off-road YZ series.

To commemorate those years of podium spots and constant technical advancements, Yamaha have gone back to their roots this year, offering up a range of brand new bikes in their old racing livery.

Famously decked out in blue these days, the Yamaha colours were once a combo of yellow and black, and they have returned to this palette with the special 60th anniversary edition 2016 YZ250F.

This is a great opportunity not just for nostalgia, but to see the two machines next to each other and witness how far they have come. The latest YZ has once again packed more power into its diminutive frame, utilising Yamaha’s revolutionary reversed cylinder head

configuration. This structure puts the inlet at the front of the bike, and slopes the heart of the motor gently backward, concentrating mass under the rider.

An under seat fuel tank further serves to centre the bike’s gravitational axis, making the YZ250F nimble in the corners and remarkably controllable in the air. Which is one element this bike will be seeing plenty of — as an established winner in motocross competition, uptake of Yamaha’s new ‘weapon of choice’ has been high among the riding community.

“The goals were very clear for us,” says Yamaha’s development engineer for the YZ250F project.

“Better power and optimal handling. So we adopted the reversed-engine layout that was so successful on the 450. At the same time, we didn’t want the power output to be too aggressive. Easy control and overall rideability was our main focus.”

It’s a winning recipe, and one which demands a look if you’re serious about dirt-slinging racing action this summer.

The big paybackTalk about high pressure. The New Toyota Hilux is not just the eighth generation of one of the most popular utes ever built.

It’s not just the replacement for a rural Kiwi favourite which has been the Japanese automaker’s flagship since 2009. No — this model carries the hopes of Toyota with it as it hits the highway — out to unseat the Ford Ranger at the top of the light commercial sector.

Cleverly, Toyota have not tried to wrest the crown from Ford by a battle of similarities. Instead they have sharpened up the previous Hilux, and played to the brand’s well publicised strengths. This is not the Rolling Stones playing dubstep, then. It’s old fashioned rock ’n’ roll, re-upped for 2016.

The Hilux has always been known for its unbreakable, go-anywhere nature — a real bonus on the backblocks. So the gen-8 turns up the Hilux recipe past ten, with a beefed up chassis and platform under a bigger, more menacingly styled body. So its rivals can tow 3.5 tons? No problem — now, so can the 2.8 litre turbo-diesel Toyota.

Here, too, you’ll find a stark contrast with the frankly agricultural handling of ancient utes — the Hilux plays the ‘sedan-like road manners’ game with the best of them.

It’s hard to believe that leaf springs can feel so responsive, but Toyota’s engineers have worked their magic with the suspension setup, delivering a smooth, controlled feel on or off-road.

In fact, after over 600,000km of testing in Australia alone, a special ‘rugged’ suspension setup has been exported by Toyota from the antipodes to a variety of harsh environments, such as India and Russia.

On paper, the new diesel mill under the hood may sound uninspiring — it’s got less torque and power than some rivals, and one less cylinder than the looming presence of the Ford. But in practice the 8th-gen engine is smooth, frugal and willing, with enough torque (450Nm) to never feel stressed, even under load.

Part of this strong showing is down to a well-set-up six speed transmission, but part is down to the quiet, silky delivery of power. Long gone are the days of utes sounding like the tractors they share a shed with!

Toyota have cleverly avoided trying to build a road car in wolves’ clothing with their new Hilux. In an era when many light commercials strive to be all things to all men, this vehicle is taking things back to its roots — though incorporating the best of eight generations of advancements.

The huge question remains — is this truly the vehicle to knock the Ranger from the throne? And it’s one which, thanks to the remarkable quality of both machines, can only be decided one

driver at a time. The winners of this arms race are the motoring public, who should

definitely take heed of Toyota’s latest strategic and masterful counterstroke.

Power surge drives success

As the old saying goes ‘there’s no replacement for displacement’ — a term coined to justify big power and big engine blocks in muscle cars. While modern turbochargers and high compression systems may have given the lie to this old adage, over at Can-Am the boys in research and development certainly believe that there’s some truth to the catchphrase yet.

That’s why the incoming 2016 range of ATVs from the big North American marque is all about power. A trio of brand new, modern and horsepower-laden new Rotax engines is at the heart of this redesign, upping the ante for competitors in an arms race of power reminiscent of that fought by the big German automakers during the mid 2000s.

At the top of the tree, the fully revamped 89 horse, 976cc liquid-cooled eight-valve Rotax V-twin engine in the Outlander 1000R gains a nine per cent power boost, putting it head and shoulders above anything else in its bracket.

Throwing down the gauntlet to the big names out of Japan and America, Rotax engineers have redesigned the pistons to wring more power out of the 80 degree mill, and have added a beefier 54mm throttle body and a whole new engine head from the successful Can-Am Maverick.

It’s the first instance of reverse engineering tech from a side-by-side UTV down to a quad in the engine bay, and it shows how seriously this power surge is being taken over at Can-Am. The same head-swap and massive 54mm throttle body have been ‘hot-rodded’ onto another mid-range favourite,

the Outlander 850. Sitting in the ‘middleweight’ division, this machine may lack the raw fury of the 1,000cc which weighs in above it, but Can-Ams in this category have proven a willing and versatile choice on the farm.

The 2016 model is powered by a 78 horsepower, liquid-cooled, 854cc power plant, delivering 10 per cent more grunt and 7 per cent more torque than last year. Torque is where it’s at for the smallest of the new Rotax offerings, with a big 9 per cent boost for the 570 series of quads.

The new 48hp, eight-valve, liquid-cooled single overhead cam 570cc V-Twin under the Outlander’s tank offers improved performance all round, packing larger pistons, a longer stroke and a higher connecting rod to increase all the vital stats while not impacting top speed.

The 570 replaces the dependable old 500cc Rotax twin, but thanks to technological advances, this new mill’s power-to-fuel consumption figures are still superb.

Preventative hoof trimmingWhat is preventative hoof trimming? I have been on farms where they had done their own preventative hoof trimming during the year.

When I started doing my trimming I had to explain what I was doing and it turned out to be quite different from the way that they did it.

This made me wonder how many people out there actually understand preventative hoof trimming and what its benefits are. Preventative hoof trimming is not cutting out white line cracks and any other issues that you may find in a claw. If anything, you will probably make things worse for the cow if that is all you do. If all lameness issues are caused by physical damage then it would make sense to cut out any deformities, but the problem starts on the inside of the claw, in the live tissue, not the outside.

If the live tissue (corium) is unhealthy, then preventative hoof trimming will not heal it. But with preventative hoof trimming we can reduce the stresses on that corium enabling it to heal quicker. The ideal is to have both claws on the

one foot carrying the same amount of weight. If one claw is bigger (usually the outer one) it will carry more weight.

This, in itself, is not necessarily a problem as most cows have a bigger outer claw than the inner one, but not all cows go lame. Most cows have laminitis as well but not all cows are lame because of that either, depending on how severe the laminitis is. A cow that has laminitis has all claws affected.

If the outer claw is bigger and therefore carrying a greater proportion of the weight the corium is under more stress in that claw compared to the inner claw — this is why most cows are lame on the outer claw. So, the first step that any preventative hoof trimming should entail is paring away the sole on the outer claw. This will reduce the weight and the stress on the live tissue in that claw.

If we trim a cow that has a white line issue and we open it up, exposing the corium without taking the sole down, then there is a good chance that the corium will prolapse because that claw is still carrying too much weight. This obviously creates more problems for the cow than benefitting her.

I know it sounds simple and straightforward but it takes skill to achieve that balance. Both claws need to be level and flat, but on the other hand they are not allowed to get too thin either.

Soil energy rules for foliar feedingA D V E RT O R I A L

Foliar sprays are a powerful command to plants saying, “Get to work — make more corn, tomatoes, grow some more grass etc.”

It takes energy from the plant to respond to that foliar command. To replenish the energy requirements, plants draw upon the energy in the soil while making the crop. If energy is abundant in the soil, plants will be productive. Foliar sprays increase productivity by providing nutrients and an energetic stimulus. A foliar spray programme can increase yield/productivity by several percentage points if the soil has energy. When soil conductivity (energy) is low, yield suffers, quality suffers and profi t suffers. Foliar spraying with low soil conductivity is like expecting top performance from the red team. They just didn’t have enough energy to perform. Here is the practical application of this principle. For gardeners, greenhouse growers and market gardeners, fi rst get your energy up in the soil by fertigations of nutrient drenches, then foliar spray for increased yield and quality.

For pastoral farmers (dairy and drystock) — test the soil Energy Released per Gram of Soil (ERGS) — 9 times out of 10 when a farmer says things have slowed up or stopped growing it is because the ERGS reading has dropped under 100 and to fi ll a maize cob at kernel fi lling time this ERGS reading needs to be at 600 or what you see is the kernels at the top of the cob not fi lled out. For farmers with margins tightening, every dollar counts.

Regatta still going strongby Paul Campbell

In 1886, a group of Kaipara settlers gathered at Pahi and had a picnic and a couple of boat races and the long-running Pahi Regatta was born.

This Anniversary Weekend, the regatta continues in the tradition of more than a century under the new auspices of the Pahi Boating and Fishing Club with fun both on and off the water.

The Pahi Holiday Park camping ground becomes a small town of wall-to-wall tents, motor homes, caravans and house trucks for three days of harbour-side fun and games and local residents and visitors — some from other boating clubs from as far away as Dargaville and Helensville partake in launch and powerboat races, kayaking contests and all manner of aquatic activities.

Holiday park manager, Julie Dry, says the facility has been booked out virtually since last year’s event.

“We are out of space this year so late-comers are advised to check out other facilities in the district,” she said.

As well as myriad on-water events, launch races, kayaking, bath-tub racing and runabout events, there are sideshows and stalls, children’s amusements, as well as plenty of food and drink available.

The sometimes dramatic bathtub race attracts all eyes to the water, while a carnival atmosphere is in progress ashore.

In the big marquee, live music and beauty contests combine to keep

visitors well entertained, along with an evening meal on the Saturday, and dancing into the night.

The emphasis will once again be on plenty of fun, plenty of sport and plenty of entertainment with the overall emphasis on safety and family enjoyment.

The events begin on Saturday, and on the Sunday, contestants in the bath-tub race, with each craft limited to a two-horsepower motor, will be vying for a winner’s purse.

The Pahi Regatta once attracted steamers from Helensville loaded with Aucklanders, to take part in greasy pole competitions, horse swimming races, and other long-abandoned

events as political correctness and OSH regulation gradually eroded the activities of yesteryear.

The early days of the regatta were recorded by the late Mavis Smith, whose family still farms in the upper Kaipara area today.

‘The regatta was one of the years’ highlights. The launch races provided such speed thrills as they were able — lumbering craft, chiefly working launches, plugging sedately around the course with the officials themselves being in some considerable doubt as to who won what. The regatta today is a more spectacular event with modern and faster craft and modern amenities ashore.

Pest control, riparian planting, landcare and environmental sustainability may not sound like schoolwork, but for 71 Northland schools they are subjects along with many other rural applications that are firmly on the agenda.

Five Northland schools and two kindergartens have recently reached important milestones through the national Enviroschools programme — an approach to sustainability.

“Funded in Northland by the regional council, Enviroschools is all about young people designing and creating sustainable schools/kindergartens, ecosystems and local neighbourhoods,” said Northland Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd.

“Four Northland schools and one kindergarten have achieved ‘Silver’ status including Kamo Primary, Kokopu, Parua Bay and Riverview schools and Comrie Park kindergarten.

“They join just 10 others to have reached Silver over the past nine years. Meanwhile, Kerikeri Kindergarten and Taipa Area School had achieved Bronze status in 2015.”

Classes have been involved in planting and caring for park and forest areas, creating gardens, riparian planting of catchment areas, creating an estuary walkway, and several school groups are involved in planting days with local Landcare bodies and with kiwi protection work. Several student groups are involved with pest control and planting whilst others have had a huge growth in Maori perspectives, including pepeha development and Matariki celebrations. Children have worked on a wide range of projects including gardens,

Record export volumesFonterra Cooperative Group Limited announced it has exported record volumes for the month of December 2015. Export data for the Cooperative in December confirms the new record for a single month’s volume, with more than 300,000 MT shipped to its global markets.

“The new record reflected the ongoing successful performance of Fonterra’s direct-to-customer ingredients, consumer and foodservice sales despite the tough global market environment,” said Fonterra managing director for Global Ingredients, Kelvin Wickham.

December’s volume was approximately 10 per cent higher than Fonterra’s previous record month in December 2014.

“This is an excellent achievement by our sales and logistics teams and it is gratifying to finish 2015 on a high with this record export volume. We have seen unprecedented global volatility due to geopolitical events over the past year.

“The dairy market has been a tough environment globally, so we are pleased to achieve record export volumes despite the challenges.”

Mr Wickham said the new benchmark would be difficult to surpass as reduced milk volumes began to impact on the Cooperative’s production levels. Fonterra is forecasting a year-on-year reduction of

milk volumes by at least six per cent this season as farmers responded to the low milk price environment and dry conditions impacted parts of New Zealand.

Since August 2015, Fonterra has reduced the amount of whole milk powder it expects to offer on the GlobalDairyTrade platform over the next 12 months by 146,000 metric tonnes in response to a change in product mix away from base milk powders and continued successful con t rac t ing and demand through other sales channels.

“An increased portion of product is being sold through bilateral customer agreements for a premium on prices achieved on GlobalDairyTrade.
