MINUTES - CHAPTER MEETING THURSDAY JULY 1, 2004

Meeting was called to order by Raggs at 8:00pm

We have 50 bikes in the parking lot tonight!!! A great turnout.

New members were introduced: Andy Karnowski, Gene Smith and Rick Schichtel. Also a welcome back to Wade Boyd.

We all want to welcome Fred Nelson back from major surgery. He is doing well and hopes to be riding again soon.

Thanks to Jim & Bonnie Supina for the dinner ride BBQ they had at their home on June 24. Hospitality and food were great. Also thanks to Greg & Jeanette Sherman for the LOH/Chapter BBQ held at their home on Saturday, June 26. A good time was had by all.

Activity pins were awarded to all who have earned them at this time. They are: Lew Kirchner, Mark Miller, Mike Rodgers, Steve Szasz, Roger Yanska, Sandy Oliverious, Jim Johnson and Ken Buquet.

Remember - it is your responsibility to make sure you have signed in at any chapter event you attend. Also make sure to have any guest you have riding with you sign a re-lease form. This is mandatory by HOG.

If anyone would like a Chapter pin see Raggs to purchase. They are $15.00 each and all proceeds go to the chapter. This is our only fund raiser for the year. No raffle tickets to sellyeah!

Our Merchandise Coordinator - Donna Weber has a catalog of items you may purchase. She is placing name tag orders so if you would like to have one please let her know.

The Chapter phone list will be available at Classic starting the second week of July.

Last November we did a food drive for the Salvation Army. It was very well received and we collected quite a bit for them. We are planning to do this again this year, more information as we get closer.

The annual Pig Roast is scheduled for Saturday, September 18th this year at the Mack home. Kim Kramer will provide us with entertainment of folk music. Also, Tina Wheelock, a leather seamstress, will be available to make patches and/or sew them on for you. Watch the newsletter for more information.

If anyone is interested in any information about any rally or event see Raggs.

Safety Officer - Bob Kling spoke about the motorcycle roadside assistance that is included in our HOG mem-bership. All information is in the Harley membership manual that you receive with your package from HOG. It was mentioned that when we ride in the group DO NOT use the highway pegs on your bike. It is unsafe be-cause you may not be able to react quickly if needed when riding in the large group. Also remember to stay hydrated and well rested.

Ken Buquet made up an information sticker to attach to the inside of your helmet. This includes all or the per-tinent information that would be needed in case (God forbid) of an accident such as blood type, next of kin, etc. These were available at the meeting. Anyone who would like to have some of them please let him know.

For anyone who attended the Baldwin Blessing of Bikes and was unable to purchase a pin contact Lew Kirchner. He knows of a business in Baldwin who now has them.

Eric introduced Dave April who was photographing us as we rode to Baldwin this year. (He was the guy hanging out of the truck window!) If anyone is interested in pictures that he took please contact Eric. Tom Weldon has flags that his mother has made that go over the radio antennae of your bike. If anyone would like one (or two) please let him know. His mother makes them! Thanks, mom!

Raggs & Paula collect the tabs off of pop & beer cans to turn into the TABS for TOTS program. What this pro-gram does is turn in the aluminum tabs and the money helps to purchase medical equipment in hospitals in the state of Michigan. Please think about this when you are drinking and pop the top off and save them.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:50pm.

In The Breeze By Michael Cole

Successful people come in all colors, shapes, and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: a winning attitude. Our friends and families see us as we really are, by our attitude. Think of it as getting up in the morning and turning on a TV show, only this time youre writing the script, and in control of the beginning and ending. Just like writing a TV show, we can write our attitude. We can make a conscious decision when we get up in the morning as to what kind of a day it is going to be. All our days and all the years of our lives will usually reflect and give us back what we really expect. Successful people expect good things to happen, and if they dont, they turn their lemons into lemon-ade (make it a lesson) and move on. All a matter of atti-tude.

Someone once said, You cant make something from nothing. Well, they were wrong. You can make a good attitude from no attitude. We make good attitudes by controlling the books we read, the shows we watch on TV, even the company we keep. Molding, stretching, and cre-ating a good attitude is a lifetime adventure. Think of the impact of a constantly improving attitude on our families, employees, and the people around us. Earl Nightingale spent a lifetime studying why some are successful and oth-ers settle for lives filled with mediocrity. It all boiled down to attitude.

Read a book, listen to a tape, or watch a positive or inspirational movie. Study success: mold your attitude and take on the world!

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriv-ing safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- "WOW--What a ride!"

Keep Your Eyes Open... for one of our enemies as bikersdeer. We have had two accidents (that I know of) this past month in-

volving deer. Frank Schroeder, who escaped with minor bumps and

bruises, and the Chryslers who were both more seriously injured, and are currently on

the mend. Our wishes for a

full recovery to all of them.

So, please be careful out

there and keep your eyes

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU...

A big thank you goes out to all of the HOG members who helped at the Father Fred ticket packet party. It may have looked like a party, but it was a bunch of hard workers getting together to give something back to the com-munity. It is easy to take pride in our group when so many are eager to jump in and work as hard as they worked.

A special thank you to Don "the guillotine paper cutter" Pish-ney for hosting, helping and providing dinner.

Father Fred is different this year. It is all about a chapter that is volunteering, sponsoring and working for a charity event that is a cornerstone in this community.

A GOOD START By Becky Barritt

I had spare time this May, so I decided to go on a little road trip atop my 2003 883 Sportster (with no windshield). I had never been on an over night trip on a bike, needless to say I was clueless as to what I was doing, what to pack, how to pack or for that matter where I was going.

I left on sunny May 5th around one pm. I had tentative plans to zig zag my way to Clarksville, AR to see a girlfriend. I wasnt sure if I would make it past Grand Rapids but I knew I had the time so I just rode along.

Four days later I found myself in Clarksville. I had camped a couple nights (in Palestine, In and Mountainair, AR) and spent a cou-ple nights with relatives in Edwardsville, IL. It was a treat to see my conservative aunts face light up when I offered her a ride. What a joy to see the excitement when one experiences the freedom of a bike for the first time or to rekindle that old love.

After visiting with my girlfriend and still having time to spend, I headed west. I rode on a very windy I-40, spent time on the Mother Road and veered south west at Amarillo, TX on US-60. Four days after leaving Clarksville and I found myself in Mesa, AZ on yet another relatives door step (God bless relatives). I spent four nights here, lounging by the pool and sightseeing with my family.

Wow what a trip so farBut there is more!

Leaving Mesa, AZ on Monday May 17th, I zagged back east a bit to Holbrook, AZ to the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. Tuesday morning, I drove route 77 north through the reservation and up to Alt. Route 89 per recommendation of a friend. There were the Echo Cliffs to the east of me for miles and then the road horseshoed around crossing the Colorado River and put the Vermillion cliffs to the west of me. The road then wound up and through the mountains.

I spent the night near the entrance of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I was up early the next morning (about 7 am) and at an elevation of 8000 feet! It was cold doing 45 mph on that bike. There was even patches of snow in the shady spots.

I viewed the canyon, warmed up, hiked a little on the well worn paths and headed out of the park. I have, by this time in my trip, realized that every mile on a bike matters to my butt - not the back or arms or legs just the sitting bones - and I debated on whether to drive on this off shoot and am I glad I went the extra ten miles. The road took me to Point Imperial, the highest point of the North Rim and the view was overlooking Alt Rte 89 and the places I had been the day before. It was breathtaking and the highlight of my trip.

The journey continues into Utah and Nevada. May 19th and 20th I spent under the bright lights of Las Vegas. My hotel was next door to the Harley Davidson Café, oh the irony!! I did some touring of casinos, visited the largest Harley Dealer, left some money behind and journeyed on till I couldnt go west any farther.

Spending the night in Hollywood took me out of my comfort zone. I was not going to drive all that way to return home to say I spent the night in my hotel room. I saw the big sign, the beach, stuck my toes in the ocean and spent the evening at Whiskey -A-Go-Go.

Saturday around noon, I hit the freeway doing Mach 3 down I-10 to Las Cruces, New Mexico where I turned north east on US-70 to Amarillo, TX. I returned to windy I -40 not by choice but lack of options of high speed roads. Shot up I-44 out of Okla-homa City and spent two rainy days in Oklahoma and Missouri. I returned for a couple of evenings to my relatives house in Edwardsville, IL (had to let the leathers dry). Friday May 28th around 8pm, my journey came to a pause when I reached my driveway. All in all I was gone 24 days, 6300 miles, and spent about $250 on gas!

Being on a bike was a different kind of road trip. There is no place to hide, no doors to lock, and I cant hide the fact that I am an individual woman on a road trip. The lines and grooves on the pavement are magnified. Every little change in weather and all other surroundings have to be taken into consideration. The one thing I learned on my trip is that we are all on the same ad-venture (birth to death) some of us choose to make the most and see the most while others are content to never leave a ten block radius. Too many people worry of things that have never happen or dream achievable dreams while never realizing them. My journey on my bike has only just begun but I think I have a good start.

It is not the destinationit is the journey.
