through practical applications. The Sports Science Unit contains specialist facilities and equipment, giving students a chance to experience a range of tests used to assess athletic performance. Dean Grayson put his hand up to do the VO2max test to test his cardiovascular endurance. Next, each of the students in the class were able to test vertical jump height and leg strength. They were then able to utilise the gym facilities used by the Sea Eagles and many other elite athletes to test muscular strength. Lastly, they recovered using a hot/cold bath to retire their exhausted muscles.

Study Skills Workshops

This week, Year 7 and 9 students made a strong start to the year by attending Study Skills workshops. These workshops are run by Elevate Education, a group of dynamic young people who shared their first-hand experience of academic success in workshops that covered topics such as time management, strategies for effective study and using mnemonics. These worthwhile programs, reviewed by the students positively, are an important part of our Academic Resilience program aiming to equip students with the skills they need to achieve their personal best.

Year 12 Music Masterclass

Next Monday night, the Year 12 music students will be undertaking a masterclass at the Freshwater Campus Auditorium at 5pm with acclaimed musician, Dan Williams. Each student will perform one work from their music 2 program and receive advice and suggestions. Any musician within the school would benefit from attending the masterclass to see the standard of HSC repertoire and an appropriate approach to perfecting material. Entry is free.

Sydney Transport Adventure

Alex Yuen (Year 10) has a passion for public transport. He has created the Sydney Transport Adventure (STA), a transport based city-wide scavenger hunt played in teams of 3 - 6, where points are gained by riding public transport, finding specific locations (dubbed pit stops), and completing team-based challenges. Alex runs these challenges in the school holidays with participants from the Year 10 cohort. He created the adventure two years ago to increase social interactions over the holiday period, as well as to share his passion for public transport. There have now been 8 STAs, with up to 45 participants (all from the supportive G21 bunch), and as one participant of the STA says (with little knowledge of public transport), “I am always excited for the next one, a chance to explore the city with friends and learn heaps about public transport.”

Well done, Alex!

In this regular feature we like to recognize students who have achieved highly in school and community events, competitions and activities. Demonstrations of the school ethos of academic excellence, personal best and giving back to the community deserve to be recognized. Parents are invited to phone or email the school any achievements we may not be aware of for inclusion in The Weekly Pines.

Cath Whalan Principal

From the Deputies NEW YEAR, NEW GROUPS….

So 2019 is well and truly on the go. The summer holidays are becoming a distant memory and the students are settling into their new patterns of study, classes and routines. In some cases, our

students are settling into a new school or other major change.

With all these changes come new groups with new dynamics. Peers who have known each other for years may still find themselves working towards different challenges in a new subject. Dr Bruce Tuckman (Princeton University) was a psychologist who carried out research about group dynamics.

In doing so, he described the following four phases:

Forming – when a group first meets and learns about the opportunities and challenges they face together. During this phase, members tend to focus on what they need to understand and there is little risk-taking in terms of presenting different ideas.

Storming – when a group starts to ‘sort itself out’ and make efforts to understand each other and gain trust. Different opinions, perspectives and goals may be voiced – and with these there can be conflict.

Norming – when a group finds its common goals, any disagreements are resolved and a spirit of cooperation emerges.

Performing – with group norms and trust established, members can now focus on encouraging and working together to achieving their best as both a collective and as individuals. This is quite often what we can describe at this school as feeling the ‘Manly Vibe’

So hopefully our students are starting to experience the ‘performing’ phase and enjoying working towards the common goals of academic excellence, personal best and giving back to the community. After all, before they know it, they will be graduating, missing their time at school and entering that fifth phase….mourning.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science Here at NBSC Manly Campus, students are bucking the state-wide, even the global trend, of girls studying Science.

In Year 11, students can study one, two, or three of 2 Unit Physics, 2 Unit Chemistry or 2 Unit Biology. They can complete these studies in Year 12 and also have the opportunity to pick up a new 1 Unit subject, Extension Science.

Over the years, students have traditionally studied at least 1 Science subject, with many choosing more than one. HSC results have been outstanding, with numerous students gaining places in the top 20 on Merit lists.

In 2019, in Year 11, only 6% of girls and 5.6% of boys do not study a Science subject. 88% of all students study at least one of Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics. In Year 12, 6% of girls and 12% of the boys in the cohort do not study a Science subject.

Many Manly students go on to university to study science or related subjects like engineering and medicine. These students were perhaps inspired by scientists, including Australian scientists like Fiona Wood who, in 2002, worked on survivors of the Bali bombing, with new techniques on burns, deadly infections and delayed shock. She invented “spray-on skin” for burns victims, a treatment that is being continually developed.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

At present, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 - 2016), only around 30 per cent of all

female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent), natural science, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent).

Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world, the world on screen reflects similar biases—the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job, only 12 per cent were women.

The For Women in Science Manifesto sets out to improve women’s access to science at all levels and in all disciplines.

1. Encourage girls to explore scientific careerpaths.

2. Break down the barriers that prevent womenscientists from pursuing long termcareers in research.

3. Prioritise women's access to senior positionsand leadership positions in the sciences.

4. Celebrate with the general public thecontribution that women scientistsmake to scientific progress and to society.

5. Ensure gender equality through participationand leadership in symposiumsand scientific commissions such asconferences, committees and board meetings.

6. Promote mentoring and networking for youngscientists to enable them to plan and developcareers that meet their expectations.

Transport Spaces of the Future University Design Challenge Student report - Alex Yuen (Year 10)

On the 4th and 8th of February, the metro minds team from last year (Alex Y, Alex T, Josh, Daniel D, Ryan L and Harry of Year 10) was invited to attend the Transport Spaces of the Future University Design Challenge hosted at Google Australia HQ in Pyrmont. The boys worked with UTS students as well as experts from UTS, UNSW, Google Australia, Transport for NSW and Tobias Design over both days. The boys were split up amongst 6 teams in which 3 teams had to answer “How might we increase access in and out of stations through easy payment solutions?” and the other half of the teams had to answer “How might we facilitate easy first and last mile access using shared zero emissions vehicles?”. Essentially, each team was looking at how transport spaces/interchanges will look in the next few decades through use of emerging technologies and looking through the lenses of “events precinct”, “health precinct” and “urban renewal precinct”.

It was a very enjoyable once in a lifetime opportunity to help shape the future of Sydney’s public transport as well as working with different industry experts. It was a good insight into the future and we were all able to learn a lot from each other. Work experience and ILP was also secured on the day. An overview of the suggestions each team worked on is below:

JOSH - Proposed an innovative AI solution that uses your personal travel plan to facilitate easy flow of passengers and optimises your transport modes and interchanges based on travel preferences, and can particularly be useful to users during events as it uses crowd data.

DUNX - The Bay Loop (like Hyperloop) was a centralised hub, modifying a developing areas social, economic and physical aspects to be moulded around public transport. This involved

integrating the metro and other public transport options into the local hub, and through the use of autonomous pods and electromagnetic tracks for dynamic transport options and future-proofing, essentially eliminated the need for walking and planning the first and last mile transfer of a trip.

RYAN - Open Stations is a plan to completely redesign stations to be a community space that provides easily for those in emergencies of those with disabilities. It mainly does this with a barrier-less payment system which is overhead the train as it leaves the station. This allows for a fully integrated system of personal transport pods which combined with the redesigned fully open, green stations, creates a useful and relevant community space for all to enjoy.

ALEX - White Bay Hub is an idea to rejuvenate the area of White Bay through the redesign of the metro station to allow easy interchange and increased flow of passengers. This is all done by adopting a circular station design, removing ticket barriers and inserting a virtual pay wall (via RFID). Sustainability is maintained through piezoelectric tiles, solar energy, tidal energy and "natural" aircon through wind turbines. White Bay Hub also adopts technology such as coloured floor visuals, allowing customers to tune into announcements via your earphones, personal wayfinding guide on a personal device and installation of a virtual ticket window.

HARRY - “Metrotogether” created a variety of ways to help people move through the Sydney Metro system, emphasising the experience-based culture that has been created in the last 10 years. We created an artificial intelligence-based augmented reality system to help guide people to curated experiences when travelling to events and we also designed a system that would alter the flow of people during event times to make sure that there is less pedestrian congestion by designing dynamic station architecture that would adapt pedestrian walkways into the station to make sure that it is operating at its most efficient at all times.

Page 6: Northern Beaches Secondary College Manly Campus · 2019. 10. 12. · productive year of learning at Manly. Youth of the Year Local Final On Wednesday evening, four of our students

TODD - Via Muru is a customer focused solution that gets to know the customer as it assists them from their door to the station. And uses this knowledge to aide them in moving through the health precinct, where the whole area has been transformed into a multi-use recreational and commercial space, and by allowing customers to check into their appointment at the station, it eliminates the need for waiting rooms as we know them. By allowing customers to wait in this transformed area, takes care of their mental health as well as physical.

Award winners

Alex Y’s team won the Tobias "design that thrives" award for sustainable design.

Alex T's team won the Sydney Metro "customer at the centre" award for creating for the customer

Harry's team won the Google "future-tech inspired" award for using emerging technologies and possible futures

Josh's team won the UTS "wow factor" award for most original and visionary design

Untangling your tweens & teens from technology: Practical (and positive) strategies for parents

In this dynamic 90-minute seminar psychologist, Jocelyn Brewer, will help parents and carers understand aspects of technology, app and video game design that prove to be so seductive (and perhaps even ‘addictive’) to young people.

Her fear-free, practical approach will help parents build skills to communicate with their tweens and teens, implement boundaries and consequences for behaviours (both online and off) and assist young people to identify and manage their emotions, time and choices.

She will explore the ways young people use technology, some of the features of tech design that makes it so alluring and hard to put down, and the impacts on young people’s wellbeing. Jocelyn will introduce the concept of Digital Nutrition as a positive framework for shaping healthy tech habits and a diverse digital diet, as well as how to apply the 3M’s (mindful, meaningful and moderate) to online activities.

About Jocelyn:

Jocelyn is a Sydney-based psychologist with 15 years’ experience in public schools as both a teacher and counsellor. She has been studying the impacts of technology use for a decade. She is part of Australia's first formal cyber-psychology research group at the University of Sydney where is completing Masters research on the relationship between parenting styles and young people's smartphone habits. She created Digital Nutrition in 2013 as a positive framework for addressing digital wellbeing issues and preventing technology addictions.

Jocelyn will provide practical strategies for parenting in the digital age and answer any questions you might have about video games, social media and digital cultures.
