Music and comedy byNorthwest performers willentertain Art & Air Festivalvisitors throughout theweekend on the FestivalStage. The stage is locatedin the south end of the Fes-tival venue, beside the mi-crobrew and wine garden.

Joe Stoddard opens theevent Friday evening at 5:30.Stoddard has been makingaudiences laugh and singalong for more than 20 years,playing conventions, dinnershows, fairs, comedy clubs,at ski resorts and other ven-ues. He has appeared withThe Beach Boys, LorettaLynn, Jan & Dean, MickeyGilley, Rich Little, PatBoone, and others.

The Coats take the stageat 7:30 p.m. Friday. Frombeginnings as buskers atSeattle’s Pike Place Mar-ket, this vocal band nowhas a full-time interna-tional performance career.They’ve won national vocalcompetitions, sung for thePresident of the UnitedStates, and shared the stagewith fellow entertainers in-cluding Ronnie Milsap, Tr-isha Yearwood, Mont-gomery Gentry, TanyaTucker, Billy Dean, CrystalGayle, and Colin Raye. TheCoats also do outreach per-formances and workshopssupporting music in schoolsthroughout the Northwest.

Billy & The Rockets play

rock-a-billy and do-wop,keeping 1950s Americanpop music alive. The Wood-burn-based group will issueits fourth CD this summer.They’ve planned two 2-hour sets on Saturday, start-ing at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Rupert HayburnBand fills out the Saturdayline-up at 3:30 p.m. Theband has been playing to-gether for 30 years and hasa huge repertoire featuringsmoking guitars, a madmandolin, dobro, six- and12-string guitars.

Vancouver, Washington’sFabulous Farelanes roundout the Festival Stage actswith two 90-minute sets onSunday, beginning at 11 a.m.and 1 p.m. The band per-forms fun, energetic, andauthentic ’50s and ’60s rockand roll. First formed in1993, the band has branchedout beyond the GreaterPortland/Vancouver area toappear throughout Oregonand Washington. They werenamed Best Local Band inthe Best of Clark Countycompetition in 2000.

Wrap up summer in Albany Aug. 26-28 at the community’s signature event,the ATI Wah Chang Northwest Art & AirFestival at Timber-Linn Memorial Parkand Albany Municipal Airport.This is theArt & Air Festival’s 12th year,showcasingthe popular events:

· More than six dozen Northwestartists display and sell their wares. Artincludes pottery, jewelry, metalwork,wood craft, paintings, fused glass,toys, tapestries, and photography.

· The hot-air balloon Night Glowand laser light show, accompanied byThe Coats, on Friday night.

· Hot-air balloons launch at dawneach morning. Rides are available fora fee. Contact the Albany VisitorsAssociation at 541-928-0911.

· Live music performances, featur-ing professional and amateur talentfrom the Northwest.

· Tie-dye, build birdhouses, photoframes, make windsocks, create withclay and experience other hands-onart in the locally-owned Red Robinand Carino’s Children’s Art Village.

· Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on theOregon Amphitheater stage on Saturday.

· Two car shows and a toy drive forDoernbecher Children’s Hospital Sat-urday and Sunday, presented byLassen Chevrolet Toyota.

· Free Young Eagles airplane flightsfor kids ages 8-17. More than 300 kidstook these flights in 2008, the mostYoung Eagles flights at any one timewest of the Mississippi.

· Northwest wines and microbrewsand international foods.

New elements of this year’s week-end festival include geocaching andon-site dry camping for recreationalvehicles and tents.

Parking is free until 4 p.m. each dayand $5 after 4 p.m. Price Road willclose to through traffic at 4 p.m. Fri-day and Saturday.

More than 40,000 attended the2010 Northwest Art & Air Festival,with more than 15,000 at the Fridayballoon Night Glow.

The Northwest Art & Air Festival ispresented by Albany Parks & Recre-ation and the Albany Visitors Associ-ation. ATI Wah Chang is the titlesponsor for the 12th year.

Art & Air Festival reaches 12th yearLocal and visiting pilots

will host the popularYoung Eagles flights forchildren ages 8 to 17 from10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.Saturday and Sunday ofthe Art & Air Festival atAlbany Municipal Airport.The free sessions include20 minutes of classroominstruction on the basicsof flight, followed by a 20-minute ride in a plane overthe mid-valley area. Eachyoung flyer will also re-ceive a commemorativephotograph of the event.Space is limited and theflights are popular – planto come early.

Helicopter rides will beavailable Saturday andSunday provided by Cor-vallis Aero Service. Cost is$30 for a 5-7 minute flight.Bi-plane rides will also beprovided.

Other activities at theairport include:

· Oregon Air NationalGuard display

· World War II guns,Jeeps, uniforms and an aidstation

· Model airplanes on dis-play

· Local airplanes on dis-play

· Military helicopters· Food service by Flight

Airport to host airplaneand helicopter rides

A play area for toddlersand pre-schoolers, a maze,young artists selling theircreations, and adult artmentors are all features ofthe Children’s Art Village atthe 2011 Northwest Art &Air Festival. The Village issponsored by the locally-owned Red Robin andCarino’s restaurants.

Throughout the week-

end, young artists will dis-play and sell their art in theVillage, which is located atthe south end of Timber-Linn Memorial Park nearthe Veterans Memorial. Theart includes jewelry, tie dye,and note cards.

Activities are scheduledfrom 4-7 p.m. Friday; 10a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday; and11 a.m.- 3 p.m.

The Rotary Club of Al-bany is sponsoring the PolioPanda hot-air balloon at thisyear’s ATI Wah ChangNorthwest Art & Air Festivalto raise awareness of Ro-tary’s work to eradicate polioand raise funds to supportthe Rotary polio initiative.

The giant panda-shapedballoon was made byAerostar International withmore than 1,400 yards ofnylon fabric and nearly twostatute miles of thread. Whenfully inflated, the Mont-golfier-style envelope holds90,000 cubic feet of air.

The Rotary Club of Al-bany is selling tickets fortethered balloon rides in thePanda’s gondola on Satur-day, Aug. 27. Cost is $10for adults and $5 for chil-dren.

Rotary International andits partners in the GlobalPolio Eradication Initiative

(the World Health Organi-zation, UNICEF, and theU.S. Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention)have worked since 1988 towipe out polio. Rotary hasbeen immunizing childrenagainst polio since 1985.The club has contributedmore than $900 million tothe effort and Rotary clubmembers have volunteered

their time and personal re-sources to reach more thattwo billion children in 122countries with the oral poliovaccine.

Through the efforts ofRotary and its partners,polio cases have decreasedby more than 99 percent.The remaining one percentis challenged by geographicisolation, worker fatigue,armed conflict and culturalbarriers. The club is cur-rently working to raise$200 million to match $355million in challenge grantsfrom the Bill & MelindaGates Foundation.

When not associatedwith the Rotary initiative,the balloon is known asParty Panda. It is used as agoodwill ambassador andpromoter of ballooning.The Panda is owned by Terriand Larry Ratkoviak ofEtna, Calif.

Geocaching enthusiastsget a new challenge at theNorthwest Art & Air Festi-val with a hunt throughoutAlbany on Saturday, Aug.27. The exercise is spon-sored by the AlbanyDowntown Association.

Geocaching is an out-door activity in which theparticipants use a GlobalPositioning System (GPS)receiver or other naviga-tional techniques to hideand seek containers, called“geocaches” or “caches,”anywhere in the world.Participants who completea search route earn a com-memorative coin; for thisevent, the coin is embossedwith the Art & Air Festivallogo on one side and theADA logo on the reverse.

“It’s fun for families,seniors, singles, really all

walks of life,” said organizerCelia Formiller, of Frogs &Pollywogs children’s store.

Participants must have aregistered username onwww.geocaching.com. Theevent is limited by the num-ber of coins available to 150.

The event starts Friday,Aug. 26, at the Night Glowin the balloon breakfast areaat Timber-Linn MemorialPark. Participants willgather for a meet-and-greetin the balloon pilots’ potluckarea. They will return at 10a.m. Saturday to receive alist of GPS coordinates totake them to caches. Cacheswill be found all over Albany,most of them downtown.Those who complete thesearch can pick up theircoins at 3 p.m.
