French Immersion

• Successful program, born out by research and results

• Promotes functional bilingualism • Taught across Canada since 1978 • Late French Immersion was introduced in North

Vancouver in 2002 • More than 2500 students enrolled in French

Immersion across the District

Why French Immersion?

• Intensive and challenging program

• Excellent option for motivated students who are willing to put themselves out of their comfort zone

• Follows the same BC curriculum as in English

• Students join their Early French Immersion peers in secondary school

• Goal: functional bilingualism by the end of grade 12

• Helpful: good work habits & a positive attitude

Characteristics of LFI

• The year begins with intensive French

vocabulary acquisition to provide the base needed for other subjects to be taught in French

• English Language Arts are not taught or

assessed

Grade 6 Curriculum

• Term 1: We’re getting started! Most of the emphasis is on

acquiring basic vocabulary and building a sense of community.

• Term 2: We’re gaining confidence and working more on other subject areas.

• Term 3: We’re more comfortable learning in French and are starting to speak “unscripted”.

Stages of learning

• English Language Arts are resumed as 20% of

the curriculum • All other subjects are taught in French

Registration 2016-2017

• Registration from January 25, 2016 – March

4, 2016 for priority placement and inclusion in the lottery

• The NVSD Late French Immersion Application Form is available at your local school, on the NVSD website (www.sd44.ca), or at the Central Registration Office (2121 Lonsdale Avenue)

Registration

• Registration form to be submitted directly to the Central Registration Office (2121 Lonsdale Avenue)

• Late French Immersion is a district program (no

catchment areas), parents indicate first and second choice on the registration form

• Siblings are given first priority in Late French Immersion

• Remaining spaces are determined by lottery

• Letter will be sent prior to the end of April 2016 informing you of your placement
