Information forMcMahons Point, Lavender Bay and North Sydney

New Years Eve is the busiest night of the year in North Sydney with tens of thousands of people visiting our foreshore to view the fireworks. North Sydney Council works closely with NSW Police and other agencies to make the event safe for residents and visitors. All foreshore parks and reserves are alcohol prohibited. There are various road closures and special event clearways in place.

This information is provided specifically for residents of McMahons Point, Lavender Bay and North Sydney. Information on other areas in North Sydney, including Managed Access area at Milsons Point can be found at northsydneycouncil.nsw.gov.au/nye

Further information on special event clearways and road closures in North Sydney and surrounds can be found at livetraffic.com

What’s new in your areaManaged Access at Blues Point Reserve will commence at 8am. Roads south of King George Street and Blues Point Road, south of French Street will be closed from 8am to facilitate this.

A dedicated resident pedestrian entry will be introduced at the Managed Access entrance on the corner of Blues Point Road and French Street. This will allow residents who show photo identification to access their properties once Blues Point Reserve is deemed full.

Ferries will cease running to McMahons Point Wharf at 3pm.

Additional fencing will be provided to Quibaree Park, allowing Police to close the area once it reaches capacity. Access to Quibaree Park is through Watt Park via Lavender Crescent.

A new queuing system will be introduced for North Sydney Station. Those wishing to depart via bus are to use William Street to access the Pacific Highway rather than mixing with the train passengers travelling north on Blues Point Road. To assist in implementing this and to protect resident vehicles from damage, three new special event clearways will be operational from 8am 31 Dec 2016 to 3am 1 Jan 2017:

• William Street, between Blues Point Road and Mount Street

• Mount Street, between Wheeler Lane and the Pacific Highway

• Blue Street, between Miller Street and William Street (extension of the current NYE special event clearway on Blue Street between Pacific Highway and Miller Street)

There are changes to the Managed Access areas, road closures and special event clearways at Milsons Point and Kirribilli. If you plan to visit these or other areas between Cremorne Point and Balls Head please check the information available at: northsydney.nsw.gov.au/nye or call 9936 8100 and request a brochure.

FAQsI’m having a party. Will my guests be able to access my property?

We recommend guests travel by public transport on NYE. If guests are arriving by vehicle, check road closure times and the notes underneath them. Roads are closed to general traffic at 5pm; earlier if your property borders a Managed Access area.

When resident access is still permitted, drivers must present photo ID with a residential address within the road closure area to gain access. Therefore, unless you are in the car with your guest, they will not be able to enter once roads are closed to general traffic.

If guests are not arriving by vehicle, meet your guests at the resident pedestrian gate. There will be staff allocated to this gate to assist with this process.

I’m having a party. Will my guests be able to bring alcohol?Guests can carry unopened alcohol into an alcohol free zone, but it cannot be opened or consumed on the street. If you are in an alcohol prohibited area, guests need to drop off alcohol prior to 8am on New Years Eve.

Is it ok for guests to leave if I see vehicles moving in my area?If guests are travelling by car we recommend they don’t leave before 3am. While you might see cars moving, there are many road closures throughout the area and it’s likely that vehicles will meet a road closure at another location and be stuck in traffic. NSW Police reopen roads as soon as possible (they want to go home too!)

Can taxis enter when a road is closed? No preferential treatment is given to taxis or hire cars. They will not be able to access roads once they have closed.

I have reserved a spot in the park/reserve for my friend or family member. Will they be able to get in once the area is deemed full?

No general public access will be permitted once Managed Access areas and Quibaree Park fill to a safe capacity. The area will be closed and there will be strictly no access. We recommend arriving with your friends and family at the same time.

If your property is only accessible via Blues Point Road, you must use the dedicated pedestrian resident entry on the corner of Blues Point Road and French Street. If your property can be accessed via King George Street or French Street, you should enter through the back streets. Photo identification will be requested. If you have problems on the night, go to the pedestrian resident entry on the corner of Blues Point Road and French Street.

Alcohol restrictionsAlcohol free zones

Streets south of Union and Lavender Street and the North Sydney CBD are alcohol free. In an alcohol free zone, unopened alcohol may be carried on the street to private property, but cannot be opened or consumed on the street. NSW Police will be enforcing these restrictions.

Alcohol prohibited areasAll foreshore parks and reserves will be alcohol prohibited, including Blues Point Reserve, Clark Park, Quibaree Park and Watt Park. This means no alcohol can be taken into or consumed in these areas. NSW Police will be enforcing these restrictions.

In addition, Blues Point Road, South of French Street is alcohol prohibited.
