Wow. Summer is finally here. It’s yardwork season. It’s vacation at the beach season. It’s work-on-your-car season. It’s time to go racing. Weather or Not …. Embrace the Rain!

Friends and family are quick to offer up trusty folk wis-dom to encourage or curb behaviors and attitudes like “You’re not getting any younger” or “Act your age” or “Whaddya got to lose?”. Thank you to all that came out to compete, work, or spectate over this past Memorial Day weekend for our Memorial Sweepstakes race weekend. Without each and every one of you the event would not have been the success that it ultimately became. We were

blessed with great weather, however weather is not the ultimate deciding factor. Staffing, marketing, and

other event promotions is what lead to the weekend being such a spectacle. I would like to personally thank Scott Durbin, John Saccameno, Larry No-ble, Lynn Serra, Mitch Lelito, Jason Ostrowski, Eric Barnes, John Church-ill, and Dave Bralich for all of their time and effort and who are NSSCC members. Others that are not mem-bers of NSSCC, but I owe a huge amount of gratitude toward are Chris

NSSCC Monthly Meetings held on 3rd Thursday of the month, 7:30 pm in the private room, Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ, Higgins Rd (Rte 72), Elk Grove Village (Board meeting = 7:00pm)

We’ll try to make the unfamiliar familiar with this feature. Often newbies of any endeavor are buried in the terminology of the new thing they’re trying to conquer. That can only offer barriers to progress. So, in an effort to encourage faster and deeper understanding of the way we “seasoned veterans” talk, each issue will offer explanations of a couple of terms you may hear us throw around. Hand Signals I: - Under normal run-ning conditions, corner workers signal drivers via a structured use of flags that vary in color & design. Drivers nod or wave to acknowledge, but if off track, they need to tell the corner workers their status. Two arms straight up means “I’m stalled”. One arm up & wav-ing means “Engine running, I’m OK to continue”.

Hand Signals II: - The corner worker then needs to tell the driver what to do: Two arms straight up means “Hold your position”. One or both arms pointing means “Go, get back on track now”. The more they exaggerate their motions, the more they mean NOW because traffic is coming soon…...

Falconer, Patti Martin, Sarah-Bess Boldt, Tim McCarter, Michael Valen-tich, Dave Wessel and all volunteers and corner workers for all of their

work in tech or race operations. I would also like to thank Dana and the rest of Blackhawk Farms Management for all of their hospitality over the weekend. For those HSAX competitors the re-sults are posted at www.mcscc-hsax.com and trophies will be mailed out for podium finishers. Next, we are getting ready for the HSAX championship weekend coming up this October. More details will soon follow here shortly. Also we are in search for the next NSSCC president. I am stepping down come December 2017. I have transition planned for the next president and will help with that transition. The next president will not have to worry about hosting the Midwestern Council banquet since the club hosted it this past year, or even mul-tiple race events

Editor’s Note: This is a piece that evolved from some post-club meeting late night mental wanderings about the future of Council and North Suburban, but the thoughts following are not limited to only those entities. If you wish, insert any club you’re attached to: card club, golf club, chess club, quilting club, cooking club, wine club, garden club, etc., etc..

Read through the disjointed commen-tary below and mind meld a strategy that creates happy, loyal, repeat & will-ing hobbyists that pave the way for the future of our passion. Maybe come to a meeting or send one of the Board an e-mail with your Ah-Ha moment. Then ask yourself, HOW OLD IS THIS STO-RY? 1982? 1990?? 2006? 2017?

Volunteering is dying – the original credo of club racing (we help each other in order to race) has been abandoned by the newest “arrive and drive” genera-tion. Personal investment in the club is lim-ited to the time spent registering for an event. Paid help is intruding on budgets, therefore on entry fees. Remember 40+1? Then 55+1? Limited follow through, no enforcement, failed

campaign? A good idea … but. All varieties of clubs are dying – old school “community of interest” mem-bership clubs are asking members for administrative, organizational help. Typically a small circle of key partici-pants are board members and often rotate jobs, with lack of new blood. NSSCC membership = 140+, typical monthly club meeting attendance is 8 to 12. Assume more is better. How? What do you get from your club? Is your club helping you get better at doing the things you joined for? Are you knowledgeable about opera-tional issues that lie beneath the public outer layers of the club? Are all of the events run to your satis-faction? Do you like the rules structure you race under? Have you attended club meetings? Why didn’t you go back again? Do you possess skills that could help make stuff better? What do you now do for your club? Dues paid grudgingly? Entry fees a value? How are you affected if your club would dissolve for some reason?

The Club is Dead. Long Live the Club.

Tired of the same “old guys” running your club? What if the folks members rely on to meet behind-the-scenes needs all burn out? Do you know what goes on behind the scenes? Do you want to? Professional clubs seem to be doing just fine(?) OK with price to pay for arrive & drive? By the way, do you believe in climate change? Do you remember Pontiac? Oldsmobile? Studebaker? Saturn? Mercury? The Bell System? Erector sets? Zenith TVs? Meadowdale Race-ways? Montgomery Wards? Kodak Film? Chernobyl? The Posiedon Ad-venture (Ooops, nevermind). And, well, whatever. Woe is me. DOOM and GLOOM. Not necessarily. A call for action, change, problem solving maybe…...

Editor’s Note: This fall will allow mem-bers to run for, nominate club offices or just attend to vote your racing conscience. Just like local and national politics, this is the opportunity for you to participate in the ongoing health and activities of NSSCC. Watch for details.

Council has been using MotorSport-Reg.com now for a couple years. MSR has been very good at getting “newbies” to our events. We had a good showing all three “Memorial Sweepstakes” days of new people. This is good. A couple notes on MSR: 1. It would be really helpful if sign ups included all info, like next of kin, tran-sponder number, club, license type. It just makes registration smoother be-fore check in and during check in. 2. The info requested is also best in short format, ie: Club: NSSCC, Lic: Inst, Full, Nov. Keep colors short also, Navaho blue is blue. Answers need to fit in a small area on timing and scor-ing card. Also, putting your name in as the emergency contact is not cool. 3. On credit cards, except for Satur-day May 27’s HPDE, if you wanted your card charged it was charged at

the gate day of. We do not charge before hand unless specifically noted. Also, to charge on MSR costs the club 5% of entry. If you can pay by check or cash

we save money. Having said that I think over half HSAX paid on card and about a third in W2W. That’s fine. We will take the money any way we can! 4. Your permanent number is only permanent if you preregis-ter. Once registration closes someone else can use your number that weekend. It costs you nothing to sign up ahead of time. Save your number! The races this year have been posted much earlier than previous years. Sign up for two today! 5. Registration typically closes the Wednesday before an event. This is not guaranteed! Read the entry form. A postmarked date doesn’t mean a thing. It has to be in the registrar’s hands. Mail-in is fine. If I am doing registration next year it

One of the best thera-pies for a lot of us who fear mistakes is to try practicing on a like sur-face to get the feel of it all and actually see re-sults to create a comfort zone.

OK. Then you notice that some-one has swiped the side of your rear quarter panel in a parking lot. Dang it, that scratch-remover polish just isn’t gonna help this time. There will be some metal straightening and body filling and repainting in-volved. Shoot, I should be able to handle that. Old saying: Paint job= 90% prep+10% paint. Well, sort of. Bad prep al-ways shows. But so does bad finishing of even well- sprayed paint. Here we go again—most sources say the same things: bring sheen and depth to the paint with finer and finer grits of sandpaper, finishing with a one-two punch with polishing compound and wax. (See par-agraph 2)

Let’s say you have these foggy plastic headlight lenses, very common on sun-exposed cars from Kia to Mercedes. Ugly. Night driving impaired. Let’s say you don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars to replace parts, but you can get sandpaper and polish/wax compounds. Even better, let’s say you have an elec-tric polishing gizmo. You can buy kits that can supply the right stuff, and the directions are very similar in all the packages. Essentially, you sand out the sun-damaged top coating, then gradually bring back the clarity and sheen with finer and finer grits then a finishing one-two punch with the polish and anti UV wax. One of the most difficult barriers to overcome is the idea of scratching up plastic lenses with sandpaper—a very counter-intuitive behavior, and one which is quite averse with normal weekend car washer folks who avoid scratches any way possible.

And, yes, the uninitiated among us will struggle with scratching up per-fectly good new paint. (See paragraph 3). But strangely, the same comfort zones can be discovered with trial & practice. 3000 Grit wet paper is truly a magic final touch. The polish & wax after that point is almost effortless. Yeah, you’re right, I kinda simplified stuff with this one. It’ll still take time and be hard work. Remarkably similar steps, eh?…..Ed

Recycled Wisdom: Sign in a gas station: Coke – 49 cents Two for a dollar ………

ISL will be available on specific models across Europe and has two modes, the first being a driver adjustable

speed limiter—a manually set maxi-mum. The other option is traffic sign recognition where the car adapts max-imum to the posted speed limit. Seems that on-board navigation sys-tems can add to the decision-making, as well. The vehicle’s fuel system is used to smoothly control torque during speed changes versus employing braking to avoid startling humans on board. The sensation is noticed, of course, but mentally noted by the driver as pre-ventative to unattentive driving result-ing in a speed trap ticket. And, as a concession to passing or evasive maneuvers, the driver can quickly override the system with his/her right foot as required. The return

Most of us car folk are not really sold on owning a car that does all the thinking. Autonomous cars are not in our future, or so we think. However, you can see how some of those pieces of software are creeping into every-day use on new vehicles. Lane wander dings and proximity chimes and auto-park magic beans are enticing for some. Others find them intrusive. Make sure my next car has an off switch, please. Ford is doing something that piqued my interest, though I’m not sure exactly how to take it yet. It’s called “Intelligent Speed Limit-er” and PC Magazine relayed some particulars courtesy of Green Car Congress.

Tech Alert: European Fords immune to speeding tickets? Whaaaat?

to ISL control is automatic when the adrenaline rush is over. Developed and rolled out in 2015 in limited scope, the first test results from Car Magazine came in as OK as a “safety net”, but needs some improve-ment in accuracy. More models in more countries now will certainly pro-vide data to put a ribbon on it. Essentially, drivers who didn’t want to get speeding tickets really liked it. This is pretty benign, right? It’s just the next logical step to current speed control stalks on our current cars, right? It may be good for a lot of distracted drivers, but somehow I fear these “driver aids” will lull many less-than-enthusiastic drivers to be even more careless and distracted. Play solitaire at highway speeds? Some pizza, may-be? What could go wrong?…..Ed

Use Larry’s contact information above if you prefer. Hey, this has a better chance for money than winning the lottery.

Nothin’ for sale this time. Go figure. You’d think someone would have something, right?
